04/06/13 Plant-Based Nutrition Lowers Blood Pressure!
For World Health Day, Animal Friends invites everyone to change their nutritional habits
- April 6, Trg bana Jelacica: measuring blood pressure, medical and nutritional counselling, a new leaflet and poster on vegetal sources of vitamins and minerals, and food pyramid containing the right foods
World Health Organization has proclaimed April 7 to be World Health Day. This year's main subject is hypertension, which is related to the fact that one in three adult persons in the world suffers from high blood pressure or hypertension, which increases the risk of cardiac arrest, stroke, and kidney failure. Untreated, hypertension can also cause blindness and fatal heart failure.
Plant-based nutrition is efficient and reliable in preventing and curing hypertension, and it also has a direct and positive impact on people suffering from obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer.
For World Health Day, Animal Friends will have an info stall on Trg bana Jelacica in Zagreb on Saturday, April 6, 2013 starting at 11:00 A.M., dedicated to the impact of nutrition on hypertension and health in general. Nutritionist Ivana Milosavljevic from Arth Centre for Nutrition and Health will give expert advice on health and vegetal nutrition, while medical doctor Martina Mikic Bublic will measure heart pressure.
Visitors will be offered the new leaflet on "Plant-Based Nutrition" and the poster "Plant-Based Nutrition Leads to Health" with the food pyramid and a list of vegetal sources of vitamins and minerals, the making of which was supervised by Dr. Dubravka Novotni, a nutritional expert. A three-dimensional food pyramid made of various real foods will illustrate the principles of plant-based nutrition. A lecture by Dr. Walter J. Dr. Ed Zimney from EverydayHealth.com, a leading provider of online information on health, has estimated that by 2025 some 1.56 billion people will suffer from hypertension. Changing nutritional habits is an efficient way of preventing and curing cardiovascular disease, including hypertension. Vegetal foods such as potato, tomato, banana, orange juice, beans, peas, dried plums, and raisins are rich in potassium, which is known to lower blood pressure. Besides potassium, plant-based nutrition helps obtain more fibre and magnesium, which play an important role in lowering blood pressure, and less sodium, which is naturally present in most foods.
Vegan nutrition, as the best way of preventing and curing hypertension, is also important because high blood pressure is often accompanied by high cholesterol, and medicines which are commonly taken against these symptoms can cause various health problems, so the side effects often become a serious problem for the patients.
John Robbins, author of the famous book Diet for a New America, in which he speaks about the link between consuming animal-based foods and health, has drawn attention to the fact that there are almost no occurrences of hypertension among the senior citizens in states in which plant-based food is part of the tradition.
Shifting to vegan nutrition is a simple solution, not only for hypertension-related problems, but also for many other leading causes of death in modern humans. According to Dr. William Castelli from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (USA), plant-based and low-fat nutrition would not only decrease the number of heart attacks for some 85%, but would also diminish the occurrence of cancer by 60%. A simple change in nutrition can help everyone live longer and healthier.
Plant-based nutrition gives us health, vitality, beauty, a slim figure, and longevity. Shifting to it is a good decision, which is confirmed by children and adults all over the world, as well as more than 150,000 vegetarians and vegans in Croatia.
