04/30/2012 STARS ASK CONGRESS TO END CHIMPANZEE TESTING

As the United States continues to conduct invasive experiments on chimpanzees, one of only two nations to do so, more celebrities are joining the call for an end to the testing. The stars are throwing their support behind the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act which would end testing on chimps and send the hundreds of chimps in federally owned-labs to sanctuaries. James Franco and Kevin Nealon pledged to help PCRM get the legislation passed, Woody Harrelson and Steve-O both wrote to Senator Barbara Boxer urging her support, and Alicia Silverstone has asked the public to contact their representatives in support of the bill. According to The Hill, James Franco continues to voice his support and he has been joined by Alec Baldwin and Bill Maher.

04/30/2012 EMILY DESCHANEL TO BE HONORED FOR FARMED ANIMAL ADVOCACY

"Bones" actress and animal activist Emily Deschanel is being honored for her work and leadership in protecting farm animals. On June 2, Mercy for Animals will recognize Deschanel in Hollywood at their Justice for All: A Night for Creatures Big and Small party. The organization is dedicated to preventing animal cruelty to farmed animals, along with promoting passionate food choices and policies. Whether it's through her personal lifestyle or joining forces with organizations, for years now Deschanel has fought for animal rights.

04/29/2012 ANJELICA HUSTON ASKS IRELAND TO BAN FUR FARMING

"Smash" star and veteran animal rights advocate Anjelica Huston has written Simon Coveney, Ireland's Minister for Agriculture, Food & the Marine, urging him to ban fur farming in the country. In a letter delivered on behalf of PETA and the Animal Rights Action Network, the Oscar-winning actress acknowledges her childhood spent in Ireland and past history of wearing fur. Huston ends the letter by pleading with Coveney to "follow through on the commitment to add Ireland to the growing list of countries - including Northern Ireland, Austria, Switzerland, and Great Britain - that have banned the cruel practice of fur farming." The ban is expected to be introduced by Irish politicians when implementing a new Animal Health and Welfare Bill later this year.

04/28/2012 PETA CIRCUS ANIMAL VICTORY AGAINST COLE BROS.

Victory is in the air for those circus animals who will no longer be endangered by the Cole Bros. Circus. Last fall, PETA asked Simon Property Group, to ban exotic-animal exhibits on all its properties. The group is one of the largest real estate companies in the country and happens to own a lot of land where circus performances took place. One place in particular was a mall in Winchester, Virginia where the Cole Bros. Circus makes an annual appearance during the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival. Simon Property Group was convinced to enact the ban that PETA requested. So if Cole Bros. wanted to have hold a performance, as it did annually, it would have to remove all animals from the show or skip the city altogether. In a surprising move, Cole Bros. announced that it had created a "new-concept circus in 2012 entitled 'Circus of the Stars' that they feel will be just as dazzling and just as amazing as previous circuses."

04/28/2012 MAD COW DISEASE DISCOVERED IN CALIFORNIA COW

John Clifford, the chief veterinary officer of the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed that a cow carrying bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or mad cow disease, came from a dairy farm in California's Central Valley. It was discovered as part of a routine inspection after the cow was sent to a rendering facility. It is the fourth reported case in the U.S. The animal tested positive positive for "atypical BSE, a very rare form of the disease not generally associated with an animal consuming infected feed," according to USDA. USDA said milk is not affected because it does not transmit the disease. Humans may be able to contract a similar form of the fatal brain disease by eating infected parts of an animal. The department has begun notifying trading partners and international health officials. The agency did not release specific information about the cow, other than that it died on the farm. The incident is under investigation.

04/27/2012 NEW UNDERCOVER INVESTIGATION REVEALS SHOCKING BRUTALITY AT EAST ANGLIAN PIG CO.

A new Animal Equality undercover investigation exposes the British Pig Industry again, revealing shocking brutality at East Anglian Pig Company (EAP), which is the third largest pork producer and leading supermarket supplier in the UK. The investigation has been featured in The Sunday Mirror. An undercover investigator worked at two different sites for a total of 29 days. Little Thorns Weaner Unit: This is a weaner unit, with approximately 8,000 to 10,000 pigs on site. At Little Thorns, the pigs were bred outdoors in six sheds for a period of 6 to 8 weeks, before being sent to the finishing units. Didlington, The Piggery: This is a breeding unit, with 3,000 pigs on site and over 700 female pigs. The pigs are raised outdoors, and fattened indoors. Over 300 pigs are sent to the slaughterhouse from this facility each week. Animal Equality proves once again that, regardless of whether a farm is labeled as being "higher welfare," "Quality Assured" or monitored by the RSPCA, there exists pain, suffering and exploitation on a huge scale.

04/27/2012 WOMAN SUBJECTED TO "EXPERIMENTS" IN FRONT OF HORRIFIED SHOPPERS

They dragged her along with a rope around her neck and pushed her down on a bench. It was feeding time for Jacqueline Traide and you could tell from the look on her face she was terrified... For the next ten hours, this attractive, 24-year-old artist was given injections, had her skin abraded and smothered in lotions and potions - then endured having a strip of her hair shaved off in front of stunned onlookers in one of Britain's busiest streets. Jacqueline volunteered for her starring role in the deliberately shocking performance to underline a campaign aimed at drawing attention to the pain and cruelty inflicted on animals during laboratory tests on cosmetics. Dressed in nothing but a flesh-coloured body stocking, she was put on display in the shop window of Lush cosmetic store's branch in Regent Street, London, to re-enact widely used tests. The "cruelty-free" chain is helping to spearhead a Humane Society International campaign to end cosmetic testing on animals.

04/26/2012 ALLEY CAT RESCUE HOSTS INTERNATIONAL FREE FERAL CAT SPAY DAY

On April 27, Alley Cat Rescue (ACR) will be hosting its Third Annual Free Feral Cat Spay Day to encourage the veterinary community and the public to end cat homelessness and to decrease shelters' euthanasia rates by practicing trap-neuter-return (TNR). TNR is the humane management of feral cat colonies or community cats, where cats are caught in humane traps, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, ear-tipped and returned to the site. Friendly kittens and cats who can be socialized are placed into adoption programs to find homes while those who are truly "feral" are returned to their outdoor homes. Alley Cat Rescue President, Louise Holton, is once again encouraging the veterinary community to participate on this important day by offering at least two free spays or neuters of feral cats to the public. This day is not only meant to help reduce feral cat numbers and assist colony caretakers, but to also help the veterinary community showcase their compassion for animals and bring them new clients.

04/25/2012 PAMELA ANDERSON TRAVELS TO BERLIN TO PROMOTE SEAL FUR BAN

Pamela Anderson has been an ambassador of PETA's campaign against her native Canada's seal hunt for years. She has sent a petition to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper with 500,000 signatures, urged China to ban seal product imports, and helped Brigitte Bardot speak out against the annual seal cull. The actress and animal advocate recently took her love of seals to Germany in an attempt to meet with the country's Minister of Economics, Philipp Rosler. According to the Times of India, Anderson went to Berlin on behalf of PETA along with information about the seal hunt. She was to ask Rosler to oppose efforts by World Trade Organization officials to resume trade of seal products in Germany. Rosler was reportedly not there at the time, so Anderson left PETA's campaign materials with his representatives.

04/24/2012 IAN SOMERHALDER GETS DIRTY, CLEANS UP CALIFORNIA

Sunday was Earth Day, but naturally, actor and environmental warrior Ian Somerhalder started celebrating a day early. On Saturday, he worked with his foundation and thousands of school children, parents, and environmentalists to help clean up the state of California, as part of his "Let's Get Dirty" initiative. In an interview Saturday evening at the ISF Influence Affair, Somerhalder said that their biggest cleanup targets for the day were actually the smallest pieces of litter. Teams worked from the northern end to the southern tip of California, and although they may not have cleaned up every square inch of the state, he feels good about the impact that they made. After spending a day picking up trash on the beach with a bunch of eager students, Somerhalder thinks the "Let's Get Dirty" event "was awesome."

04/23/2012 INDIA TO CUT ANIMAL EXPERIMENTS FROM SCIENCE EDUCATION AND RESEARCH

India's Ministry of Environment and Forests required the use of modern, non-animal tools in place of dissections and live animal experiments for biomedical education and research, with the exception of new molecular research. The new policy applies to all universities, colleges and other research and teaching institutes throughout India and has the potential to save large numbers of animals each year. While implementation of this decision is unclear, this is a significant step forward. Each year around the world, more than 100 million animals, or more than three each second, are bred, injected, infected, cut open, genetically altered, force-fed drugs and chemicals and ultimately killed for the purposes of scientific research, testing and education.

04/21/2012 DICAPRIO WANTS YOU TO TAKE ACTION FOR CAPTIVE BIG CATS

Actor and philanthropist, Leonardo DiCaprio, has spoken out again over the dangers of privately owned large cats, and the animal cruelty it often leads to. DiCaprio had been very vocal on this topic in October 2011, after the tragic killing of more than 50 escaped exotic animals from a backyard menagerie near Zanesville, OH, and is re-voicing his concerns again now. Using twitter and facebook, the actor has warned about the Zanesville tragedy and how restrictions and bans need to be put into place in order to prevent this from happening again. He also posted a link on twitter to a prepared letter to members of Congress, stating "Big cats like tigers & lions belong in the wild, not in people's backyards & basements. Take action!"

04/21/2012 JEWEL NURSES INJURED HUMMINGBIRD

Singer and songwriter Jewel has taken in an injured hummingbird she found on her Texas ranch over the weekend. The poverty and conservation activist showed her animal-loving side by posting to twitter on Sunday, "Look what I found. Poor thing must have hit my window and is stunned. Hope he’s not hurt 2 bad," adding a picture of the tiny little bird. Jewel has set the bird up with a place to recoup and is nursing him back to health, tweeting to fans, "I gave him sugar water and made him a comfy little nest out of old gloves-hope he feels better!"

04/20/2012 "HUNGER GAMES" STAR JOSH HUTCHERSON ADOPTS A RESCUE PUP

In "The Hunger Games," Josh Hutcherson's character Peeta charms all of Panem with his big heart. Now the actor is proving that he's just as compassionate in real life - by adopting a shelter puppy! Hutcherson recently rescued Driver, a 3-month-old pit bull, from California's Downey Animal Shelter, but had to wait for the pooch to recover from surgery for a broken femur before bringing him home. Driver apparently had a rough life before meeting Hutcherson; in addition to the broken leg, the pooch is also missing a few toes, and was dropped off at the shelter as a stray. In a nearly too-good-to-be true twist of fate, a friend put Sasha Rose of rescue group Hands Paws Hearts in touch with Hutcherson, who was specifically looking to adopt a rescue dog, and a pit bull at that, on the very day that Rose took Driver out of the shelter.

04/19/2012 GLOBAL CAMPAIGN AGAINST ANIMAL TESTING UNVEILED

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), Humane Society International (HSI) and LUSH Cosmetics unveiled Fighting Animal Testing, a new anti-cosmetics animal testing campaign. According to a press release from LUSH, the campaign is the largest of its kind and has launched in 48 countries and over 700 LUSH stores in the U.S., Canada, Europe, India, Australia and New Zealand. Along with working with lawmakers, regulators and researchers, the organizations will be encouraging consumers to buy cruelty-free products and sign the campaign petition. Petitions will also be available to sign in person at LUSH locations.

04/19/2012 IAN SOMERHALDER WANTS DAMON SALVATORE TO GO GREEN

He already does more than his fair share to make the world a greener place, and now Ian Somerhalder is ready to take his activism to another realm - the TV! The actor says that it's time for Damon Salvatore, the neck-biting character he plays on "The Vampire Diaries," to go green. He points out that the show's set is eco-friendly and utilizes compostable bowls and flatware, and now he's ready for his character to follow suit. For starters, Somerhalder says that Damon needs to rethink his ride, a 1967 Camaro. He told E! News that Damon should upgrade to something sexy and eco-friendly, like a Fisker Karma. "You have this guy who's lived almost two centuries," he said. "And he realizes, I'm stuck here for the next millennium. I've watched the degradation of our earth and our planet, watched the population grow. I have to be around for the next thousand years, I might as well take care of the place. Plus, this car is as sexy as hell."

04/18/2012 REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE ROMNEY STRAPPED THE FAMILY DOG TO THE ROOF OF THEIR CAR FOR VACATIONS

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has taken heat from liberals for strapping the family dog, Seamus, to the roof of their car for vacations. But the dog actually "loved it," Romney’s wife Ann told ABC's Diane Sawyer in a joint interview with her husband. Critics have focused on the Romneys' 1983 trip from Boston to Ontario, Canada, with Seamus inside a dog carrier on the roof of the Romneys' station wagon, saying Mitt Romney is mean to animals. But Ann Romney said Tuesday that Seamus greatly enjoyed his rides on the roof and looked forward to trips and that there was nothing sinister to an anecdote from the 1983 trip that leftists are trying to use against her husband. In that trip, the dog got sick, defecating on himself and the car's windshield.

04/17/2012 COW ESCAPES SLAUGHTERHOUSE AND FINDS SANCTUARY IN WOODSTOCK

A cow who escaped a Paterson, New Jersey slaughterhouse last Tuesday night has found refuge at  Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary in upstate New York. After police and animal control captured the bovine, veterinarians examined him, finding him a bit battered and dehydrated, but none the worse for the wear. The owner of the slaughterhouse promised to release the cow and animal rights advocate Mike Stura offered to escort him to his new home. Stura, who has "Show Mercy To Animals," tattooed on his arms, is certain the cow has a happy and purposeful life ahead of him. "He'll never wind up on someone's plate, that's for sure," he said.

04/17/2012 JOHN ABRAHAM WILL SCREAM FROM THE ROOFTOP FOR PETA

Indian film star and producer John Abraham is speaking out positively on behalf of PETA and his commitment to the animal activist organization. "PETA is an organization that needs people to get up on rooftops and scream to make their cause heard. If they need someone to do that, I'll do that. If they need someone like John Abraham to jump on the roof, John Abraham will do that. It's because I believe in the cause of animals I'll do that. Animals can't speak. They are unduly hurt every time. I will always be an animal lover in my life. I endorse PETA in every way," he revealed. The 39-year-old Bollywood heartthrob is also an avid vegetarian. In 2008, Abraham was even named "Eco Warrior" by the Earth Matters Foundation.

04/16/2012 CHRIS COLFER ADOPTS 8 YEAR OLD CAT FROM SHELTER

First Chris Colfer created some original artwork to raise money for animals. Now, the actor has graduated to adopting. Colfer went down to the West Valley Animal Shelter and took home an 8 year old 20 pound cat named Brian. Colfer wrote, "I adopted a cat today from the West Valley Animal Shelter! His name is Brian, he's 8 years-old and 20 pounds!" The "Glee" star continued, "It was heartbreaking to see so many sweet animals needing homes. Please think about rescuing!" Speak to any shelter employee and they'll tell you that everyone wants a young dog or cat. But, there are many advantages to bringing home an older animal. Most of the time they have already spent a large majority of their lives living in a house which means they are probably potty trained and not so likely to eat your shoes.

04/16/2012 TORREY DEVITTO JOINS PETA TO SPEAK OUT AGAINST FUR

Torrey DeVitto recently teamed up with PETA in helping shelter animals find happy and safe homes and speaking out against the cruelties of the fur industry. In regards to getting a companion animal, DeVitto strongly advises people to adopt or rescue. In the video, the actress sits with her adopted pooch Beau while she talks about the importance of not only rescuing animals, but the appalling world of fur. "Fur is a huge issue I'm really passionate about. I've been passionate about it for a really long time. I just think it’s so despicable and disgusting and to kill these animals, because of some vain fashion, is just so revolting to me and even as a kid I just never could never wrap my head around somebody doing that. And especially nowadays, I just feel like we have so much information and for people to still wear it?"

04/14/2012 SARAH MCLACHLAN TELLS CANADA TO BUY OUT SEAL HUNTERS

Animal lovers and conservationists rejoice: the end of the Canadian seal hunt is imminent. Despite the country's long-time efforts to have the ban repealed, the European Union's ban of seal products stands, and Russia's recent ban eliminated over 90% of Canada's seal product exports. The majority of Canadians oppose the seal hunt which is subsidized by their government and paid for with their tax dollars. Despite the vanishing market for seal products and stockpiles of seal pelts, the quota has been set at 400,000 seals for this year's hunt. With the hunt's inevitable extinction, Canadian Sarah McLachlan is suggesting a way for Canada to end it. The singer wrote a letter on behalf of PETA to Prime Minister Stephen Harper and asked him to buy out the sealers. McLachlan, who has spoken out against the seal hunt before, joins a list of celebrities who have lent a famous voice to the seals including Ellen DeGeneres, Ke$ha, Bill Maher, Pamela Anderson, Nigel Barker and others.

04/13/2012 "HOUSE" ACTRESS GOES NAKED FOR PETA

Former "House" star Lisa Edelstein has long been involved in the green scene – showing up on this site multiple times over the years, as well as promoting animal rights issues and advocating for a meat-free diet. That latter passion (a vegetarian/sometimes vegan for 28 years) is now the focus of a new PETA ad featuring the gorgeous 44-year-old relaxing nude in a bed of leafy kale. The bit urges people to "Go Green by Eating Green." "A vegetarian diet is a really important part of what we need to do to help the environment," she says. "The meat industry is really toxic to the environment. The cattle industry – besides the fact that there's a lot of cruel things happening – the manure is extremely toxic."

04/13/2012 ADELE'S WEIGHT-LOSS STRATEGY: GOING VEGETARIAN

British songstress Adele has never been one to shun her curves. When designer Karl Lagerfeld said she was "a little too fat" earlier this year, she fired back, saying, "I've never wanted to look like models on the cover of magazines. I represent the majority of women and I’m very proud of that." Nevertheless, she debuted a dramatically slimmer figure at the Grammys, and now her weight loss secret has been revealed. According to the Mirror, a healthy combination of exercise and a vegetarian diet led to her new look. The Mirror reports that Adele has lost about a "stone" (14 pounds), and that her boyfriend is also on the regime. The lifestyle changes are part of Adele's plan to improve her overall health; she started losing the weight before having throat surgery, and has given up smoking as well. The article quotes a friend of the couple who said, "The weight is dropping off the pair of them and they plan to keep dieting until the end of April."

04/12/2012 JARED LETO OFFERS TO MAKE VEGAN PANCAKES LIVE

Jared Leto announced via Facebook that he will make vegan pancakes live if one of his posts gets enough likes and shares. The actor/singer posted about an upcoming live show for his band 30 Seconds to Mars on VyRT. Digital tickets are being sold at VyRT.com and Leto's promoting the appearance on his social media page. If this particular post receives 75,000 likes and 2,500 shares within 24 hours, he will cook vegan pancakes live. Thirty Seconds to Mars will perform a live, intimate, in-studio performance on VyRT on April, 27. The band will also show a preview of their live tour film, a sneak peak at the band's documentary Artifact and a discussion with the band. If you want to see the 40-year-old make vegan pancakes, then get on Facebook and show your support!

04/11/2012 GARTH BROOKS AND TRISHA YEARWOOD HAVE GONE VEGAN

Country music legends Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood have reportedly gone vegan. According to the Las Vegas Review Journal, a couple from Washington State recently won a lunch with the superstar husband and wife. "Brooks revealed that he and his wife, Trisha Yearwood, have become vegans and, while ordering, asked the server to bring him Steve Wynn's favorite vegan food," the site revealed. ThisDishIsVeg.com reached out to the article's author, who confirmed the information – adding that he was told Brooks ordered a "vegan Cobb salad." That Brooks might be a vegan is not surprising considering the passionate embrace of the plant based life by his employer, billionaire Steve Wynn.

04/11/2012 BRITISH GOVERNMENT EUTHANIZES 800 WAR DOGS

807 brave dogs who served on the front lines with British soldiers have paid the ultimate price for their service. The scandal was revealed after government officials confirmed the figures in response to Freedom of Information requests from the Daily Mirror. Saying that many of the dogs are too fierce to be retrained as pets, the UK government has been quietly killing them off in droves. Ironically, the dogs survived the dangers of war only to die from the prick of a vet's needle, and dog lovers worldwide are mourning their loss while demanding answers. Of the 807 dogs killed in the past decade, the majority were put down after serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Ministry of Defense said twenty canines were euthanized in 2002: that figure rose to 89 in 2003 when the Second Gulf War began. 95 dogs were killed in 2006, but the worst year for British war dogs was 2009, when 125 of them were put down.

04/10/2012 IAN SOMERHALDER TO BUILD ANIMAL SANCTUARY, FIGHT BULLYING

In addition to steaming up TVs every week on "The Vampire Diaries," Ian Somerhalder has quickly established himself as one of the greenest celebs in the business. From his charitable organization to his dedication to cleaning up the planet to his compassion for animals, Somerhalder is on a mission to make the world a better place. Now the actor is planning to establish a sanctuary for animals with behavioral problems. Somerhalder is in the process of purchasing a farm in his home state of Louisiana, and at least part of it will be dedicated to creating the eco-friendly retreat. In conjunction with the project, he's working with his foundation to establish a program to help human bullies "work through their issues" by interacting with the animals.

04/09/2012 NEW FREE APP TO HELP SAVE ENDANGERED WHALES

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) has announced the launch of "Whale Alert" and said the app will be a "massive step" toward saving these whales. The organization says the app is the result of 15 years of their conservation work, donations from supporters and the Davis Conservation Foundation, and an "unprecedented coalition of industry, government and academia all working to save North Atlantic right whales and give them a chance to survive." Several organizations and agencies came together for the app, including the NOAA, US Coast Guard, EarthNC, Inc, Cornell, University of New Hampshire, Gaia GPS and the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. According to iTunes, the app displays areas in which sightings of right whales must be reported, active conservation areas, and warnings when right whales are nearby, allowing mariners to be aware and slow vessels down to regulation speeds. The whales are also located through the use of acoustic buoys which pick up the sound of their calls. Right whales are often injured or killed as a result of collisions with large ships.

04/08/2012 MICKEY ROURKE WORKING TO BUILD ANIMAL SHELTER IN ROMANIA

Foxy, the stray Mickey Rourke adopted while filming the thriller "Dead in Tombstone" in Romania, isn't the only lucky pup to benefit from Rourke's love of dogs. After learning about the large stray dog population in the country, Rourke decided to help raise funds to build a much needed shelter. The goal is to raise 1.5 million Euro. With a head start of $250,000 coming personally from the actor, they've got a good launch for their campaign. The Bucharest Herald reports that Rourke wants the shelter to be as big as a football field and capable of caring for thousands of dogs. He plans on going to Romania on an as needed basis to make sure the shelter project is going according to plan. Rourke already has support in the country. Veterinarians Mircea Zeta and Simon Corneleu are on board.

04/08/2012 ALI MACGRAW CALLS FOR AN END TO HORSE SLAUGHTER AND TRANSPORT

When the slaughter of horses for human consumption was re-legalized in the US last year, public outrage was immediate. 70% of Americans oppose the slaughter of horses, and Obama had even made a campaign promise to permanently ban it along with the transport of horses for slaughter, but proceeded to sign the bill re-legalizing it after a long-time ban. The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act of 2011 would ban both the slaughter of horses for food in the US and transport to other countries for slaughter, and PETA is urging Congress to support it. Now, actress Ali MacGraw has joined in the campaign and written a letter to her friend and senator Tom Udall about the bill. PETA also provides a page to contact your represenatives about the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, which MacGraw writes will create "enormous improvement in the welfare of neglected and forgotten horses."

04/07/2012 FIREFIGHTERS RESCUE 20 DOGS FROM BURNING HOME

In Hopewell, New Jersey, twenty pups are breathing easy after firefighters rescued them from a burning home. According to HuffPo, 21 dogs, ranging in age from two weeks to two years, were trapped when their guardians' home caught fire. Fortunately, thanks to newly donated equipment, rescuers were able to save all but one of the dogs. The firefighters were equipped with special pet oxygen masks that had recently been donated by the Humane Society. Because many of the dogs were suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation, the oxygen masks were instrumental in their rescue. The owners also survived, but since the home was destroyed, all the dogs are being kept at the vet or with neighbors. As for the Lawrence Road Fire Company, they consider the rescue a success, and encourage fire departments everywhere to get the pet oxygen masks if possible.

04/06/2012 DYEING EASTER CHICKS RAISES CONCERN OVER ANMAL WELFARE

Animal activists have long been critical of many Easter traditions, including dyeing Easter eggs and giving baby chicks away as gifts. Yet a less well-known trend of dyeing chicks has animal rights groups crying foul. Poultry farmers claim the practice is safe, yet animal rights activists claim the procedure is stressful for the animals, who are either sprayed with dye as hatchlings or injected with dye while incubating. While many poultry farmers keep quiet on the practice of dyeing chicks, retired poultry farmer Peter Theer notes that he routinely told customers to return their chicks when children inevitably grew tired of them. "We sold a lot of them," he said. "People buy whatever is available. They'll usually take one or two of each color, maybe 10 or 15 of them. The kids get tired of it pretty quick."

04/05/2012 PETA TO TOUR COLLEGES WITH 3D FACTORY FARM SIMULATION

PETA has announced a new college campus tour meant to give students an idea of what animals experience at factory farms. According to peta2, the tour is scheduled to hit campuses starting this Fall and will feature a 3D version of PETA's "Glass Walls" video narrated by Paul McCartney. The "Glass Walls Exhibit: 3D" will be inside a 20×30 foot tent "inside of which students will be put in the position of animals in the meat industry by sitting in life-size gestation crates." When viewers leave the tent, they'll receive free samples of vegan food and literature along with PETA stickers. No dates or locations for the campus tour have been announced yet.

04/04/2012 NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC UNDER FIRE FOR BLUEFIN TUNA SERIES

The bluefin tuna, labeled a species of concern by the NOAA and listed on the IUCN's Red List of threatened species, is rapidly falling victim to overfishing. Their populations continue to decline to the point that the price of the threatened fish has skyrocketed, with one massive bluefin recently being sold in Tokyo for $736,000 USD. So, National Geographic's decision to air a series following the fishing of bluefin tuna is not sitting well with conservationists. The network's new series "Wicked Tuna" is set to premiere this Sunday, and follows a group of bluefin fishermen. Terry Garcia, executive vice president of mission programs at Nat Geo says that the series will also have a message about the importance of preserving the species. However, others say this show will send the wrong message. The Center for Biological Diversity adds that while the show "does pay brief lip-service to the plight of the bluefin tuna its focus is on the thrill of the chase for these increasingly severely threatened animals."

04/03/2012 300 PITBULLS SAVED FROM DOGFIGHTING ARENA

An animal rights group in the Philippines said it helped police bust a South Korean syndicate operating a massive dog fighting ring and rescue 300 pitbulls. Two South Korean nationals and several Filipinos were arrested in the Friday raid at a two-hectare farm in the city of San Pablo just south of the capital Manila, the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) said. Many of the dogs were severely injured, with ripped ears and tongues, including 20 that neded to be euthanised, it said. "This appears to be a large operation and these South Koreans need to be punished," PAWS programme director Anna Cabrera said.

04/03/2012 GRAPHIC ANTI-ANIMAL-TESTING BILLBOARD BANNED

An anti-animal-testing billboard has been taken down after the Advertising Standards Bureau declared it "depicts violence that is unjustified." The billboard has been displayed in numerous sites around Tasmania over the past year, the Mercury reported. It shows a woman's face that has been made up to look as though she has been subjected to tests that animals endure in laboratories worldwide. The image is part of an awareness-raising campaign by the groups Against Animal Cruelty Tasmania and Choose Cruelty Free about the horrors of animal testing. AACT spokesman Chris Simcox said many people would be horrified to learn that they may be buying products from companies that use these tests. AACT plans to create a new billboard, to continue the cruelty message.

04/02/2012 LEILANI MUNTER ON BEING A GREEN VEGAN RACE CAR DRIVER

Leilani Munter is an environmentalist, animal activist, vegan... and race car driver! She has been to Taiji, Japan several times to document the slaughter of dolphins, driven a "The Cove" themed race car at Daytona to raise awareness, and promoted the eco-friendly impact of a meat-free diet. Recently, she opened up to Care2.com about her plant-based diet. Munter is always quick to point out that eating animal products is not just harmful to animals, but to the planet. She is also working on a greener racing industry. 04/02/2012 WILLIE NELSON TO TAKE HOME STARVED NEGLECTED HORSES

Whisper and Traveler, a stallion and a mare who were seized from their owner for neglect, will be going from the worst conditions to the best. Musician and horse lover Willie Nelson has offered to give them a permanent home once they have recuperated from their traumatic ordeal. The horses, currently being nursed back to health at LEARN (Livestock and Equine Awareness and Rescue Network), were severely underweight, dehydrated and Whisper had kerosene burns on his back from where the owner reportedly tried to burn off a fungus. News 4 reported that when rescued, the pair were close to death.
