10/31/2014 US PROPOSES LIONS BE CONSIDERED A THREATENED SPECIES

The Obama administration has proposed that the African lion be classified as a threatened species, making it the latest of big cats to join the group of animals whose numbers have been dwindling and closing in on extinction. The decision came from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service after a petition from a number of conservationists to label lions as endangered, and therefore even more protected, was denied. The Fish and Wildlife Service claimed that while the number of lions has decreased about 30 percent, from 75,000 in 1980 according to the best estimates to about 33,000 today, the species is not in eminent danger of extinction. The dwindling numbers are credited in great part to humans expanding into areas inhabited by lions. Lions are also killed by hunters who travel to the 10 areas in eastern and southern Africa to bring home their pelt and head as trophy.

10/30/2014 NAIL IN COFFIN FOR NORWEGIAN SEAL HUNTING

Norway has cut a 12 million kroner ($1.8 million) subsidy for seal hunting from next year's budget. Environmentalists have applauded the move. Some businesses say it is putting an end to a historical and eco-friendly practice. The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries say stripping the seal industry of subsidy has been dictated by "economic priorities." The government is aware of how vital the financial support has been for the business. "Seal hunting businesses are run by 80 percent subsidies," State Secretary Amund Ringdal of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries told the Norwegian news agency NTB. "When they are removed, the consequences will clearly be big. But we cannot say whether it's the final nail in the coffin for Norwegian seal hunting." The opposition has criticized the government for yielding to pressure from the EU.

10/29/2014 NINE OUT OF TEN DOCTORS ARE SERIOUSLY CONCERNED ABOUT WHAT THE MEAT INDUSTRY'S UP TO

Over 95 percent of physicians are concerned about antibiotic resistance, a Consumer Reports poll found. And they have good reason to. Called a global threat by the World Health Organization and "the next pandemic" by CDC director Thomas Friedan, antibiotic resistance threatens their ability to do their jobs. Imagine being a doctor and having to tell a patient with a common but serious disease, like pneumonia, a urinary tract infection or gonorrhea, that there's nothing you can do to help them. In fact, this is already becoming their reality: of the 500 doctors polled, 85 percent said they'd treated a patient with a confirmed or suspected antibiotic-resistant infection; 35 percent saw their patient suffer serious complications or die as a result. There is, of course, a large role for doctors to play in helping to solve this problem: antibiotics lose their efficacy when they're overprescribed, which doctors have been known to do when they're uncertain about a diagnosis, when they're pressed for time or in order to placate pushy patients.

10/28/2014 FRANCE DEVELOPS TASTE FOR VEGETARIAN CUISINE

Vegetarians have long been scorned and even abused as an affront to Gallic gastronomy, but their numbers are now growing so fast that France's foremost chefs have started catering for non-meat eaters. The king of haute cuisine, Alain Ducasse, has astounded gourmets in the land of snails and steak tartare by taking meat off the menu at his flagship restaurant at the Plaza Athénée in Paris. Some critics sneered, but the highly respected Gault & Millau guide approved the move to a cuisine it described as "zen" and "revolutionary," while comparing the the restaurant's minimalist decor to "a model farm."  Vegetarian food is gaining acceptance in France as health and environmental concerns turn the French away from red meat. Meat consumption fell by 15 per cent between 2003 and 2010, according to Crédoc, an organization that monitors consumer and lifestyle trends. Vegetarians are now estimated to account for three to five per cent of the population, or as many as 3.3 million, mostly urban professionals, according to Manon Dupré of the market research company Mintel.

10/27/2014 WALLOON GOVERNMENT BANS FUR FARMING

On October 23, the Walloon government adopted at first reading a draft decree prepared by the animal welfare Minister, Carlo Di Antonio to ban fur farming in Wallonia, one of the three federal regions in Belgium, as of January 1, 2015. The proposed decree was accepted by the PS and CDH majority but still needs to be adopted by the Council of State and the Walloon Parliament before being signed into law. This seriously compromises the construction of a mink farm in the commune of Virton where GAIA and many locals have opposed the granting of a building permit. The Brussels-Capital Region plans to take similar steps. Bianca Debaets, Secretary of State for animal welfare has also expressed her intention to take concrete measures in the very near future. In Belgium, more than 150.000 mink are annually held captive in the most gruesome circumstances and killed for their fur. All mink farms are located in Flanders.

10/24/2014 CA SCHOOL TO BECOME FIRST VEGAN SCHOOL IN THE COUNTRY

The United States will have its first ever all vegan school in 2015. MUSE School CA was founded by environmental activist Suzy Amis Cameron (aka wife of James Cameron) and her sister Rebecca Amis back in 2006. Since then, kids have been encouraged to "live consciously within themselves" and with solar panels across the school, classrooms built with recycled materials and 160 raised boxes for planting produce on site, the school has been doing the same. Now, getting rid of meat for good is the next eco-friendly move. "Each year since I've been here, we've eliminated one or two days of meat to the point where now we're just serving one meat meal a week," said Kayla Webb, who started working at the school three years ago when it served organic meat at lunch for students and staff every day of the week. "Starting next year, it’s going to be completely plant-based eating."

10/23/2014 CARRIAGE HORSE ESCAPES AND RUNS THROUGH NYC

A new video of a horse running wild through the streets of New York has become activists' latest example of why carriages need to be banned in the city. It all started on Saturday morning when a horse being bathed at a Midtown stable got away from the handler. The animal then sprinted down Eleventh avenue with the NYPD chasing after him. At 8:30 A.M. around 37th street, the horse can be seen in the video galloping away from police cars which seem to try to box him against a building. "This is the latest example of why horse drawn carriages are not just inhumane but entirely unsafe in a city congested with cars, trucks and buses," said Allie Feldman, Executive Director of New Yorkers for Clean, Livable and Safe Streets (NYCLASS), the group who posted the video online.  Eventually the horse was captured and brought back to the stables after his harrowing experience.

10/22/2014 VIRGIN AMERICA DUMPS SEAWORLD

Earlier this summer, Ecorazzi reported that SeaWorld's stock had plummeted by nearly 33% – a decline largely due to the drop in park attendance and media criticism caused by the controversial Blackfish documentary. Overall, the stock devaluation caused $832 million in losses for SeaWorld shareholders, adding to the long list of problems the marine parks have faced since Blackfish was released in 2013. Last week, Virgin America announced that the airline will be joining the ranks of companies, celebrities and organizations that are standing up for the rights of captive orcas and dolphins by refusing to be associated with the SeaWorld parks. Virgin America has removed SeaWorld from its Elevate rewards program, which allows customers to visit attractions across the U.S. and earn travel points along the way. SeaWorld will no longer be listed as an Elevate attraction or qualify visitors to earn points with the company.

10/21/2014 LEONARDO DICAPRIO FOUNDATION GRANTS $2 MILLION FOR OCEAN CONSERVATION

Actor and environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio's conservation foundation said on Thursday it has awarded a $2 million grant to establish marine reserves and to stop overfishing. DiCaprio, who was named a Messenger of Peace by the United Nations last month to raise awareness about climate change, said the money provided to Oceans 5 will support marine conservation projects around the globe. Ocean 5 is an international funders' collaborative that supports groups working on ocean conservation projects.

10/20/2014 DENMARK MOVES TO BAN BESTIALITY

Denmark is planning to ban bestiality after long-running international pressure over animal welfare. Denmark is one of the few European countries which still allows bestiality. Norway, Sweden and Germany have all banned the practice, leading to a rise in the underground animal sex tourism in Denmark. Minister of Food and Agriculture Dan Jørgensen, who is planning an amendment to the Animal Welfare Act for next year, said to Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet: "I have decided that we should ban sex with animals." He indicated the damage done to Denmark’s reputation by allowing animal sex was a factor in his decision, but added: "The most important is that in the vast majority of cases it is an attack against the animals."

10/15/2014 HUNKY MEN POSE WITH CUTE PUPS FOR ANIMAL RIGHTS

The New York City-based rescue group Louie's Legacy Animal Rescue is the organization behind a genius calendar that combines handsome shirtless men with adorable, adoptable doggies. The 2015 calendar, fittingly called "Hunks and Hounds," benefits Louie's Legacy financially and also promotes animal welfare. "The message of the calendar is that we should all be kind to animals and protect them from harm," says Mike Ruiz, a celebrity photographer who shot the calendar's images. Ruiz is well-known for LGBT advocacy on top of his animal rescue work. And he's appeared in front of the camera himself for the Show Your Soft Side anti-cruelty campaign, with his much-loved, very spoiled pit bull Oliver, who was adopted in 2012.

10/14/2014 ZURICH ZOO EATERY SERVES MEAT FROM ITS ANIMALS

The Langenberg wildlife park in Langnau am Albis, south of the city of Zurich, touts itself as a place where visitors can get close to nature. But revelations about items on the menu at the park's restaurant sparked an outcry. Martin Kilchenmann, spokesman for the park, confirmed to the newspaper that guests at the restaurant can eat meat from the park's animals. But he said the use of the meat was "very ecological" and shows visitors the animals' "natural cycle." Every year around 100 animals are born in the park but because of space restrictions not all of them can remain. If the animals cannot be placed elsewhere they are killed and many are used by the restaurant.

10/13/2014 SPLIT ZOO TO BE RELOCATED

The city council of Split last week made a decision about the relocation of the Split ZOO Marjan. The conclusion is to start to relocate the ZOO and open an animal shelter, thus presented the deputy mayor Goran Kovacevic. Kovacevic has explained to the councillors that the current location Marjan does not fullfill the conditions for a ZOO and therefore they are looking for a new location and in the meantime they would conduct the decision about relocation according to the conclusion from 2006. "Adoption is long-term process so as searching for a location. Split, as the most popular tourist city, has been declared that it has one of the most monstrous ZOOs" said Kovacevic. The deputy mayor stated that he requested a list of species from the director of the ZOO and the dynamics of moving. Councillor Ivan Banovic has stated that he would take effort to close all the ZOOs on the planet because wild animals does not belong in cages. (dalmatinskiportal.hr)

10/11/2014 MEAT IS OFF THE MENU AS MORE BRITONS BECOME VEGETARIAN

A record one in eight British adults have turned vegetarian after ditching meat and fish, according to new research released on Sept 30. Some 12 per cent now follow vegetarian or vegan diets – rising to 20 per cent of those aged between 16 and 24, said analysts Mintel. And millions more are “flexitarians” cutting back substantially on the amount of meat they eat but not quite going the whole hog. Health and environmental reasons are the main factors behind the move, said Mintel’s report to coincide with World Vegetarian Day, Oct 1. This has led to a booming £625million-a-year market for meat-free products in 2013, which is expected to grow even more to £657million this year.

10/07/2014 "BUNNIES ARE FOR CUDDLING, NOT COSMETICS TESTING"

Singer-songwriters and animal activists, Leona Lewis and Kate Nash, recently took to their respective Twitter accounts to speak out against cosmetics testing on bunnies. The two vegetarians snapped selfies with their pet bunnies (Nash actually became veggie in order to save her pet rabbit, Fluffy) to support Human Society International's #BeCrueltyFree campaign, which hopes to put an end to cruel cosmetics testing on animals worldwide. Cosmetics testing on rabbits is not only cruel, but it's also unreliable. As the #BeCrueltyFree works to make progress globally (the EU, Norway, Israel and India have all banned animal testing for cosmetics), everyone can do their part by buying from companies that do not test on animals.

10/06/2014 FBI TURNS ANIMAL CRUELTY INTO A FELONY

From now on, people who cause harm to animals will be prosecuted as felons because the FBI has classified it as a top-tier grade A offense. Previously, the FBI labeled animal cruelty crimes as "other" grouping it with other lesser offenses. The system made the offenses hard to track and prosecute so this month the bureau has announced animal cruelty crimes, like murder and assault, will have their own category as a felony. The change is based on research that shows serial killers and other violent criminals often start their hideous crimes with animals. According to an FBI statement, the animal cruelty category will be divided into four sub categories: simple or gross neglect; intentional abuse and torture; organized abuse, which includes dogfighting and cockfighting; and animal sexual abuse.

10/03/2014 CELEBRATE WORLD ANIMAL DAY WITH VEGANISM AND ANIMAL ADOPTION!

Ambassadors of this year's World Animal Day in Croatia, Anita Euschen and IFEEL, both vegans and Animal Friends' activists, invite everybody to change their eating and other habits and thus contribute to creating a less violent world towards animals. Wearing clothes and shoes made without fur and leather, buying cosmetics that are not tested on animals, changing your diet to vegan, helping in shelters, adopting abandoned animals and informing others about animal rights are just some of the ways you can help animals. Anita and IFEEL invite our citizens to visit Animal Friends' stall on Oct 4 from 10 A.M. to 6 P.M. at lake Bundek, where the City Office for Agriculture and Forestry of the City of Zagreb organizes a program for World Animal Day. Learn from the activists about the ways you can help animals and make a tasty lunch using recipes you will get there!

10/03/2014 CALIFORNIA TEENS ARRESTED IN 920 CHICKEN DEATHS

Deputies in central California have arrested four people — one adult and three juveniles — who are suspected of breaking into a Foster Farms chicken ranch and killing more than 900 birds with a golf club. Fresno County sheriff's officials acting on several tips Wednesday tracked down 18-year-old Gabriel Quintero of Riverdale. Also taken into custody were two juvenile males, ages 15 and 17, from Caruthers, and a third juvenile male, age 17, from Lemoore. All have been booked on charges of burglary and felony cruelty to animals. Investigators say the suspects pulled back a fence Sept. 20 to gain access to a shed south of Fresno and massacred 920 chickens with a golf club and possibly another blunt instrument.

10/02/2014 35,000 WALRUSES FORCED ASHORE LINKED TO CLIMATE CHANGE

A massive congregation of Pacific walruses are being forced to haul out on a beach in northwest Alaska as their Arctic sea habitats melt away, thanks to climate change. An estimated 35,000 walruses located on a remote barrier island near Point Lay, Alaska were photographed on Saturday by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) annual Arctic marine mammal aerial survey. It's one of the largest, if not the largest, onshore gathering of animals ever photographed in North America, and climate change is to blame. Based on these shocking photos, it's clear to see how dangerous this is for the animals as the younger and small walruses are at risk for being trampled to death. Already, the NOAA has sighted 36 carcasses. For environmentalists, this massive congregation is a huge warning sign.

10/01/2014 PIPERLIME TO STOP SELLING FUR PRODUCTS

The people have spoken and one of the biggest fashion retailers in the United States has heard it. After a petition asked Gap Inc.'s piperlime.com to stop selling fur products, the company has announced it will do just that. "Your opinions and views matter to us," wrote Debbie Mesloh, Senior Director of Public Affairs at Gap Inc. on the change.org petition page. "That is why, effective immediately, Piperlime will no longer sell real fur products, whether they are made by our company or not. This is an expansion beyond our existing policy of prohibiting real fur in our branded products."
