12/31/2014 NEW YORK BANS PET TATTOOS AND PIERCINGS

Body art is not for animals, at least not in New York. It will soon be a crime to pierce or tattoo your companion animal anywhere in the state. There's an exception for markings done under a veterinarian's supervision for a medical reason or identification. When done specifically for identification, the law says tattoos should include only numbers and letters allotted for a tattoo identification registry. The law also doesn't apply to ear tags on rabbits and guinea pigs. Penalties for violations range up to 15 days in jail and fines up to $250, according to the governor's office. Similar legislation was introduced this summer in New Jersey.

12/31/2014 MALAGA TO BAN ANIMAL CIRCUSES

The mayor of Malaga, Francisco de la Torre, announced that animal circuses would no longer be allowed in the city. He also announced that pony rides, a popular fairground attraction, would also be outlawed. The decision comes in the wake of other Spanish cities banning the use of animals in circuses. Cities such as Barcelona, Lleida, Girona, Tarragona, Vitoria, Alicante and Vigo have also decided to scrap animal circuses. The proposal will be worked on in the coming weeks with the intention being to reach the widest consensus possible. Meetings will shortly be held with the newly formed Federation of Protectors of the Province. The prohibition of both animal circuses and pony rides will be brought by a team from the ruling Popular Party government and come before the whole council in January 2015.

12/30/2014 PIERCE BROSNAN WADES INTO ZIMBABWE ELEPHANT ROW

Actor Pierce Brosnan has called on fans to protest the planned export of wild elephants from Zimbabwe to the United Arab Emirates and China. Mr Brosnan, a long-standing campaigner for animal rights, said he was "deeply saddened" to read the "gruesome story" that 36 baby elephants had been taken from their mothers and were awaiting shipment "to the UAE and possibly China. The Bond actor posted a link to the Telegraph's report about the export on his Facebook page and urged followers to write to the Zimbabwean government to express their outrage.

12/29/2014 GERMAN VEGAN SUPERMARKET TARGETS 60 STORES

German vegan supermarket Veganz believes it has found a niche with its type of store as turnover is growing spectacularly and it already has 9 stores, while its founder has lofty goals. Launched in February 2011, the German chain focuses on the growing vegan market. The chain has more than 4,500 products on offer, coming from 270 suppliers in 30 different countries. The chain currently has seven stores in Germany, one in the Czech Republic (Prague) and one in Austria (Vienna). The number of stores proves there is a market for this particular type of store: "The time is now and this is an idea with potential," founder Jan Bredack, who has been a vegan since 1 January 2009, said. The founder is very ambitious: "By 2020, we aim to have 60 stores in Europe and the United States." Jan Bredack aims to achieve that through franchise stores.

12/23/2014 VEGANUARY - GO VEGAN IN JANUARY!

A worldwide campaign is nudging carnivores to switch to veganism during January. Veganuary was started in late 2013 by U.K.-based husband-and-wife duo Matthew Glover and Jane Land. "We wanted to provide people with the practical help and advice to try vegan, but we also wanted to create an inclusive community where people could feel supported and heard," Land writes on the campaign's site. Participants sign up on Veganuary.com and pledge to cut meat, fish, dairy and other animal products and byproducts from their diets for the first 31 days of 2015. The site itself functions as a go-to hub for all things vegan. The campaign highlights the different reasons people may decide to go vegan, including a love of animals, environmental issues and health concerns. "Whatever your reason, we're here to support you," the site reads.

12/22/2014 PAUL MCCARTNEY SENDS ABUSED ANIMAL IMAGES TO THE MOON

As far as animal rights campaigning goes, Paul McCartney's strategy is a novel choice. The musician wants to send images of cruelly-treated animals to the moon in a bid to remind generations to come. McCartney has invested £60 in a "memory box," which will feature images as well as PETA's exposé on the meat industry, Glass Walls, narrated by the singer. The container will be ambitiously sent to the moon in 2025 as part of a crowd-funding project, entitled Lunar Mission One, by British scientists, who plan on launching thousands of digital time capsules to the uninhabited Luna planet. The photos and DVD are presumably intended to persuade future astronauts to convert to vegetarianism.

12/20/2014 UNILEVER DROPS LAWSUIT AGAINST VEGAN ''JUST MAYO''

Hellmann's mayonnaise maker Unilever has withdrawn its lawsuit against the maker of "Just Mayo." Unilever filed suit against Hampton Creek earlier this year claiming the name of the small California company's product amounted to false advertising. The consumer-products giant had said that "Just Mayo" has no eggs and therefore doesn't meet the definition of mayonnaise. It argued that the word "mayo" implies that the product is mayonnaise, and that Hampton Creek was stealing market share from Hellmann's. ''Just Mayo's'' label states that it doesn't contain eggs. The label features a white egg with a plant growing in front, which is the company's way of showing that they use plants instead of chicken eggs. The lawsuit has been a boon to Hampton Creek, boosting sales of ''Just Mayo'' and giving the company "the opportunity to tell our story to millions of people." (mobile.philly.com)

12/19/2014 NETHERLANDS AND MEXICO APPROVE BAN ON WILD ANIMALS IN CIRCUSES

The Netherlands joins the list of other European countries that have prohibited the use of wild animal species in circuses. The additional countries include Austria, Belgium, Croatia and Estonia, whilst two countries, Greece and Malta, have prohibited all animals in performances (including circuses). The decision for the ban by the Netherland Government has been in consideration for some time, but following confirmation on Saturday 13th December 2014, it has been concluded that the ban will be in place from 15th September 2015. On 11th December, Mexico’s congress also passed legislation to ban the use of animals in circuses across the country. This followed a similar ban by Mexico city six months before. The bill awaits the signature of President Enrique Pena Nieto. (bornfree.org.uk)

12/18/2014 ARIANA GRANDE: EATING A VEGAN DIET MAKES PEOPLE "HAPPIER"

Pop singer Ariana Grande is once again promoting the benefits of a vegan diet. "I don’t eat a lot of Italian things, because I’m vegan," she said. "I was raised on meat and cheese, so I’ve had enough for anyone’s normal life span." When asked why she switched over to a vegan diet, Grande said: "I love animals more than I love most people, not kidding. But I am a firm believer in eating a full plant-based, whole food diet that can expand your life length and make you an all-round happier person." The former Nickelodeon star switched to a vegan diet just over a year ago, and has been quite vocal about the consumption of animal products since then. In an interview with V Magazine earlier this year, she bluntly said, "Look, cows produce milk with nutrients for cows. Maybe that’s why Americans end up looking like cows!" (ecorazzi.com)

12/17/2014 WHITE RHINO ON VERGE OF EXTINCTION: SECOND-LAST MALE DIES

The white rhino is one step closer to extinction with the death of Angalifu at the San Diego Zoo Safari. Only five members of the heavily-poached species exist now, including one male and four females. The animal, estimated to be 44 years old, died from age-related ailments, park officials announced. Angalifu was in decline for some time and had refused food for several days. White rhinos are the biggest in the family and have been heavily poached for their horns. Buyers value them as dagger handles and for their supposed medicinal properties – a superstition disproved by scientists, but persistent in many Asian cultures. (rt.com)

12/16/2014 CONSUMING LESS MEAT ESSENTIAL TO CURB CLIMATE CHANGE

According to an analysis from the thinktank, Chatham House, and reported by The Guardian, the global livestock industry produces more greenhouse gas emissions than all automobiles, aircraft, railway vehicles, and nautical vessels combined. For most people, this may come as a surprise because a worldwide survey by Ipsos MORI finds twice as many people believe transportation is the biggest contributor to climate change. Rob Bailey, the lead author of the analysis by Chatham House, made a comment on this. "Preventing catastrophic warming is dependent on tackling meat and dairy consumption, but the world is doing very little. A lot is being done on deforestation and transport, but there is a huge gap on the livestock sector. There is a deep reluctance to engage because of the received wisdom that it is not the place of governments or civil society to intrude into people’s lives and tell them what to eat." 12/15/2014 MORRISSEY IN ZAGREB: "MEAT IS MURDER"

Morrissey's European tour promoting his new album hits Zagreb, where his message of animal rights was typically uncompromising. A clearly devoted sell-out crowd welcomed British music icon Morrissey to the capital of Croatia on December 12, 2014. Morrissey of course has devoted much of his musical career to championing the rights of animals, and the entire tour is taking place with non-vegetarian products banned from the venues. For the uninitiated, footage of bullfighters being gored to the accompaniment of "The Bullfighter Dies" may have been shocking enough, but his main message was reserved for "Meat is Murder", during which he turned to the giant screen behind him, hands resting against the back of his head, watching a video of the realities of animal treatment in food production. The only time that Morrissey spoke for more than a couple of sentences was to implore his fans to improve the architecture of Zagreb by attaching stencils of his 'Meat is Murder' message. 12/12/2014 CHER LASHES OUT AGAINST CHRIS CHRISTIE ON GESTATION CRATES

The pop icon Cher took to her Twitter to denounce New Jersey Governor Chris Christie for rejecting a bill that would have banned the use of gestation crates for pregnant pigs, and in true Cher fashion, she didn’t hold back. "IOWA FARMERS,WHY MUST U TORTURE [PREGNANT] PIGS? U PUT THEM IN CRATES & LOCK EM DOWN SO THEY CANT MOVE! C. CHRISTIE,UR DESPICABLE BULLY 4GET POTUS," one tweet read alluding to what Bill Maher had suggested in an October New York Times opinion piece: that Christie would veto the bill so he could win votes in Iowa for a possible Presidential run. "Would give anything 2C The Owners of this Company dragged 2 THEIR Pig Torture Chambers & LOCKED INSIDE. ITS SUCH A GOOD THING IM NOT YOUNG," another tweet read from Cher. Gestation crates carry pregnant sows for their entire lives until they are taken to the slaughterhouse. The crates are no larger than their body size, which immobilizes from lying down or turning around. Nine U.S. states have already banned the practice of them, and a slew of celebrities, including Edie Falco and Danny DeVito, as well as 93 per cent of New Jersey, were hoping the Garden State would join them.

12/11/2014 CHINA IVORY CRAZE KILLS 100,000 ELEPHANTS

China's skyrocketing appetite for ivory is leading to the unsustainable slaughter of African elephants. As prices for precious ivory goods have surged in China, the number of poached elephants has also escalated. Iain Douglas-Hamilton, founder of Save the Elephants, said 100,000 African elephants have been killed for their ivory in just the past three years. "African elephants could disappear from the wild within a generation," unless China does more to end the sale of ivory, said Douglas-Hamilton. China is the world's largest consumer of ivory as newly-wealthy Chinese consumers have developed a taste for exotic luxury goods. (money.cnn.com)

12/10/2014 BURGER KING BIGWIG GOES FOR VEGGIE STARTUP

Sweet Earth Natural Foods touts its natural ingredients, like nourishing grains, plant-based proteins and vegetables. From the looks of its products, which include seitan, veggie burritos, and quinoa and lentil burgers, it would be hard to guess that its founder was once a board chairman of Burger King and a top executive at PepsiCo. That's exactly what founder Brian Swette was, until he was introduced to the movement in sustainable foods. Swette's daughter became a vegetarian, and his wife, Kelly, who serves as the CEO of Sweet Earth Natural Foods, was interested in how nutrition affects health. "Knowing that health is one of the biggest challenges that face the country, I got this epiphany," Swette said. "We save about a thousand chickens today — if you look at the science of it, it's mind blowing," Swette explained. Sweet Earth makes meatless burritos, savory seitan, vegan bacon, and veggie burgers, some of which are vegetarian, but many are vegan. (upstart.bizjournals.com)

12/09/2014 EMILY DESCHANEL IS ON A MISSION TO SAVE FARM ANIMALS

Longtime vegan Emily Deschanel had a "life-changing" experience when she visited a Farm Sanctuary animal shelter for the first time. "I had already known that farm animals have feelings and intellect, but then to really see them up close and spend time with these animals was pretty incredible," the actress, 38, tells PEOPLE. "I didn't realize how individual chickens could be, and the people who work there know each sheep by name from far away. They're individual creatures who have their own little souls and personalities and quirks." "Ten billion animals a year are killed for food in the United States alone," she notes. "It's insane. I've done different things for different animals, from primates to dogs and cats, but I really like to focus on [farm animals] because the numbers are so high and people aren't as aware." 12/08/2014 HENS GET HOMES FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Almost 100 rescued chickens - saved from an egg farm by Animal Place sanctuary - embarked on their new lives in loving homes on Saturday, when PETA’s Los Angeles headquarters, the Bob Barker Building, hosted the biggest chicken adoption event ever. "These birds will never be used as egg-laying machines or cut up for dinner - they'll be family companions, as beloved as any dog or cat," said Animal Place Executive Director Kim Sturla. Guests snacked on vegan chicken-salad sandwiches and washed them down with vegan eggnog. The birds had a blast, too, creating abstract art with non-toxic paints. The chickens were rescued from an egg farm that was "depopulating" birds who were no longer productive. This is done at farms all over the country - even at so-called "humane" or "free-range" farms. You can help chickens everywhere by refusing to buy any eggs and instead using egg-free options for baking and cooking. (peta.org)

12/05/2014 CALIFORNIA BECOMES FIRST STATE TO BAN HUNTING PRIZES

The California Fish and Game Commission voted to ban cash and other prizes in hunting contests at its meeting on Wednesday. The new rules come in the wake of protests by animal rights activists, who argue the widespread slaughter of coyotes is inhumane and unnecessary. Legislation to ban the practice has previously been put before state lawmakers, but such efforts proved unsuccessful. Animal advocates ramped up their pressure on policy makers in November after 11 coyotes were killed during a hunting contest in Bakersfield, California. The new rules would only prohibit hunters and hunting groups from offering "any prize or other inducement" for the killing of non-game mammals - the coyote can still be hunted year-round with no limit. 12/05/2014 BOYCOTT SAFARI CIRCUS!

On the occasion of the appearance of Safari circus in Westgate in Zapresic near Zagreb, Animal Friends invite everyone to boycott the circus and to write to Westgate at info@westgate-shopping.com, asking them not to support shameful primitive animal circuses. Animal Protection Act forbids keeping wild animals in circuses and their participation in circus and other animal shows, however, domestic animal shows are not banned, such as the ones used by Safari circus in their shows. Over thirty domestic animals are subjected to training and forced into unnatural, senseless behavior in the shows, like when a plank is put on two cows onto which other animals climb, jumping on each other's back. This is no fun for animals, just like aggressive trainings are not fun, nor are stressful travelling, bad weather conditions, noise and accommodation in tents. Animal Friends are asking for all animals shows in circuses to be banned because life in the circus means animal abuse.

12/04/2014 SALT LAKE CITY BANS HORSE-DRAWN CARRIAGES

There will be no clip-clopping of horse hooves around downtown Salt Lake City's Temple Square and its festive lights this holiday season. The City Council has banned horse-drawn carriages. There will be no direct effect on a horse business. Carriage for Hire, the only such operation in Utah's capital, shuttered its stables earlier this year in the wake of the August 2013 death of a carriage horse named Jerry. The horse's collapse was captured on video and went viral. The council’s unanimous vote Tuesday came about 15 months after the public uproar over Jerry's demise. They reviewed ordinances from 19 other cities that permit the practice. The controversy over Jerry's death never did completely subside. In the end, the ban was made easier for the council because the new law does not impact any existing business. Horse-drawn carriages will continue to be allowed during special events, such as the Days of '47 Parade.

12/02/2014 JLO: VEGANISM ISN'T FREAKY!

Jennifer Lopez couldn't believe what cutting out animal products did to her figure. Looking more in shape than ever, many of Jennifer's fans were keen to hear how the 45-year-old does it. Recently, it emerged a five-week vegan diet plan by Marco Borges was to thank for helping her drop some pounds. And now the star has encouraged people not to be afraid of cutting out animal products. "When everyone hears vegan or vegetarian people get so scared," she explained to Extra. "When I started eating this way, right away I dropped like eight to ten pounds and I was like, 'Woah!'"  Jennifer revealed that on her vegan diet, she started the day with millet cereal, topped with bananas, blueberries and almond milk. Lunch was a kale salad with red peppers, while dinner consisted of zucchini pasta with vegan cheese and tomatoes. And food was only half the battle - the fit star also made sure to work out regularly. She might not love the gym, but six-hour dance rehearsals did the trick.

12/01/2014 BUSINESS AND ENTERPRENEURS SIZE OPPORTUNITIES IN RISE OF VEGANISM

In 2013 the UK meat-free food market hit £625m in sales, a figure forecasted to rise to £657m in 2014. Today, some 12% of the UK population identify as either vegan or vegetarian, and 20% of 16-25 year olds self-identify this way. Jennifer Pardoe, founder of London plant-based food consultancy Zest says businesses are slowly recognising the 'mega trend'. "With more people becoming plant curious, restaurants and supermarkets are realizing they need high quality plant-based food options to satisfy consumer demand," explains Pardoe.
