07/29/2016 DUBLIN COUNCIL VOTES TO BAN WILD-ANIMAL CIRCUSES

On Monday, Dublin City Council voted in favour of banning wild-animal circuses from public land! Thanks to the motion, which was introduced by Councillor Noeleen Reilly, Dublin now joins Limerick, Galway, and many other local authorities across Ireland that have taken a stand against circuses that force animals such as elephants, tigers, and zebras to perform. In response to the news, Ms Reilly said: ''I am delighted my motion was passed. This is a cruel outdated practice that holds no place in modern Ireland. Training and torturing animals to perform tricks for our entertainment in an unnatural environment is inhuman and degrading. Not only that but animals are chained or caged for up to 24 hours a day and are only let out to perform. I want to commend all the local Authorities who have passed similar motions to date and now call on the Minister to listen to what the councils are telling him and to ban this practice from the state immediately.''

07/28/2016 VEGANS HAVE HEALTHIER GUT BACTERIA

Recently, more and more research is showing that having a healthy gut bacteria is key to overall health. A well-balanced microbiome can help with digestion, cholesterol levels, mental health, immune function and more. What is the best way to eat for a healthy gut? Researchers recently set out to answer this question. In a study with 153 participants, 51 were vegan, 51 were vegetarian and 51 were omnivore. The study was conducted in Italy and used the Mediterranean diet as a standard of reference, defining a healthy diet as one that is high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes. By examining the records of participants, 88% of vegans were found to adhere to the healthiest of eating patterns, 65% of vegetarians and 30% of omnivores. To determine gut health, researchers took samples of feces and urine and measured metabolites or byproducts of bacteria. Those following a vegan diet had the highest levels of short chain fatty acids (SCFA), or beneficial gut bacteria metabolites, indicating that they had a healthier microbiome in their gut. 07/27/2016 BELGIAN FUR RETAILER PELSLAND GOES BANKRUPT

Veritable temple of fur in Belgium, Pelsland was declared bankrupt last month by the court of Antwerp. A part of the Belgian scene for 40 years, Pelsland's demise was supposedly down to an exceptionally mild winter, according to its director. However, according to Belgian Fur Free Alliance member GAIA, the reasons for the chain's bankruptcy go much deeper. In recent years there has been a marked decrease in global consumer interest in fur, motivated primarily by concern for ethics and animal welfare. Kopenhagen Fur, one of the world's leading fur auction houses, estimates that global production of mink fell from almost 72 million animals in 2015 to 52 million this year.

07/26/2016 SIGN THE PETITION TO FREE A SAD POLAR BEAR AND GO VEGAN

Shanghaiist reports that activists are trying to free a polar bear that currently resides at the Grandview Aquarium in a shopping mall in Guangzhou, China. Animals Asia, shared a video of the bear and is calling for heartbroken viewers to do something. In the few months since the videos release, more than 150,000 signatures have been collected. Signatures aren't going to close the multi level, approximately 624,000 square foot aquarium. That means this bear and the arctic wolves, beluga whales, and walruses also exploited in facility are no closer to escaping the feces, larvae, and insect overrun entertainment plaza. And while the image of a cute bear seen motionless except for the quiver of his lips is enough to make anyone weep, it should be enough to make anyone vegan.

07/25/2016 FIVE STAR MAYOR OF TURIN TO CREATE ITALYIS FIRST "VEGETARIAN CITY"

Chiara Appendino, the new mayor of Turin and a force in the populist Five Star Movement (M5S), pledged last week to promote vegetarian and vegan diets as a "priority" in her administration. According to M5S's 62-page manifesto – which also called for better urban planning and the protection of public land – Turin's new mayor said the endorsement of meat-free and even dairy-free living was fundamental to the protection of the environment, health, and the wellbeing of animals. While the specifics of the strategy have not been disclosed, the city is expected to set up educational projects in schools to teach students about animal welfare and nutrition. The move is unprecedented in Italian municipal government, but is in keeping with the views of the eurosceptic M5S.

07/22/2016 LAX NAMED BEST VEGAN AIRPORT

A recent study by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine recognized Los Angeles International Airport as the most vegan-friendly in the nation thanks to the eschewing of fast-food chains such as McDonald's and Burger King in favor of healthier eateries like The Counter and the all-vegan Real Food Daily. New Jersey's Newark Liberty International Airport's Flora Café and Green Beans Coffee helped it to rise to second place, while San Francisco's and Philadelphia's international airports tied for third place. Of the nation's 24 major airports, Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport came in last, with only 32 of its 57 restaurants serving a plant-based meal option. The report found that overall, 71 percent of these major airport's restaurants offered at least one vegan meal, representing a 25-percent increase from the first annual report in 2001.

07/21/2016 "HUMAN ON A CHIP" COULD MAKE ANIMAL TESTING OBSOLETE

Researchers at California's Lawrence Livermore Laboratory are testing a new computer chip that evaluates the effect of chemicals on the human body far more effectively than animal testing can. Officially called iCHIP (for "in-vitro Chip-based Human Investigational Platform"), the informally dubbed "Human on a Chip" replicates the cells of human organs and tissues obtained from organ donors. The cells are then exposed to chemicals, drugs, or toxins, and electrical signals are used to measure their impact on the central and peripheral nervous systems, the blood-brain barrier, and the heart. Kris Kulp, one of the project researchers, says that "animal testing can be more complicated and costly, whereas these chips can be much more reliable." (vegnews.com)

07/20/2016 NEW UN TASK FORCE TO FIGHT MIGRATORY BIRD HUNTING

Migratory birds fly millions of miles between their breeding grounds and winter homes. But upon arrival to Europe, some meet an unpleasant end at the hands of hunters, who kill millions of waterbirds, songbirds and raptors each year. Now, the United Nations Convention on Migratory Species has established a task force to protect these birds - some of which are already endangered. The task force has wrapped up its first meeting ever, in Cairo.  The task force is looking at the legal aspects, but there are also actual volunteers going out trying to catch these people. This is to strengthen action from the police forces. The task force will also help the training of judges and police officers, which is important to increase penalties. According to a study by Birdlife International, an estimated 25 million migratory birds are killed every year. (dw.com)

07/15/2016 CANADIAN MONKS SAVE HUNDREDS OF LOBSTERS

A group of Canadian monks from the Great Enlightenment Buddhist Institute Society released a reported 600 pounds of lobsters off the coast of Wood Islands on Saturday. The monks purchased the animals from local vendors on Prince Edwards Island and conducted a 20-minute prayer ceremony before setting them free. "Hopefully, we can find a spot where there are no cages waiting for them," monk Venerable Dan said before contacting fisherman for advice about the safest areas to release the lobsters. "This whole purpose for us is to cultivate this compassion toward others. It doesn't have to be lobsters; it can be worms, flies, any animals," Dan said. The lobster rescue follows similar work by Christine Loughead, who spent more than $300 to transport lobster Lobby Joe from a supermarket tank in Ontario to the ocean in Halifax. (vegnews.com)

07/14/2016 STARBUCKS LAUNCHES FIRST COCONUT MILK-BASED DRINK

On Tuesday, coffee retailer Starbucks has launched its Iced Coconut Milk Mocha Macchiato—its first-ever coconut milk-based drink—in the United States and Canada. The beverage contains espresso, white chocolate mocha sauce, and a caramel and mocha drizzle on top, and can easily be veganized thanks to its single origin Sumatran coconut milk base. News outlet Business Insider noted that it is clear Starbucks launched the new drink in an effort to both respond to customer demands and capture the growing $6.7 billion dairy alternative market, stating that "its role in highlighting non-dairy options represents the growing appeal of dairy alternatives, both to lactose-intolerant customers and those simply seeking new flavors." The coconut milk-based macchiato is the newest addition of vegan-friendly options Starbucks introduced this summer, with recent additions including Caramel Espresso, Youthberry White Tea, and Strawberry Lemon Limeade granitas. Starbucks added coconut milk to its menu in 2015 as an alternative to soy milk.

07/13/2016 A NEW VEGAN STRAIGHT EDGE HARDCORE BAND

What happens when you combine a famous pop-punker, a well-known vegan product developer, and a couple of their hardcore friends? Some serious punk rock, with the vegan and straight edge labels proudly stuck to it. Andy Hurley of Fall Out Boy fame and Chris Colohan of Vegan Magic, along with friends James Chang (Catharsis) and Scott Crouse and Ian Edwards (Earth Crisis), unveiled on Noisey that they've joined forces to preform as "Sect." The band falls in to the vegan straight edge sub-genre that might not be too well known, but it promotes living free from drugs, cruelty, and other social-political messages we are totally jazzed about. Their songs "Scourge of Empire," "Death Dealer" and "Sinking" are each heavier than you're even expecting from former Earth Crisis band members. The album was recorded at Roost Frequency and is due to be self-released in North America on August 5. A variety of labels will be take it worldwide.

07/12/2016 SPANISH MATADOR GORED TO DEATH

Victor Barrio, 29, from Segovia was fighting in Teruel, Aragon in eastern Spain when the bull speared him through the chest. His wife, Raquel Sanz, 32, was in the crowd, having organized a group of supporters from their home town to attend the event. The matador was taken to hospital unconscious but doctors could not do 'anything' to resuscitate him and save his life. The matador met his match at the annual festival named Feria del Ángel, reports El Mundo. The horrific goring was shown live on TV, and viewers have uploaded footage of the scene on social media. Although deaths from Spain's famous bull runs are relatively common, with up to around 10 deaths recorded each year, the last matador deaths in Spain were Francisco Rivera Paquirri in Córdoba, 1984, and Jose Cubero Yiyo in Madrid, 1985. Barrio's death was the first of a matador this century in Spain in a bullring.

07/11/2016 NEW SOUTH WALES TO BAN GREYHOUND RACING

New South Wales will become the first Australian state to ban greyhound racing, the premier Mike Baird announced on last Thursday, following an investigation which found systemic industry animal cruelty, including mass greyhound killings and live baiting. The industry will cease to operate from July next year following a transition period. Victoria, South Australia and Queensland have responded by saying greyhound racing will not be banned in their states. The Australian Capital Territory chief minister, Andrew Barr, said his government could not continue to support the greyhound racing industry following the NSW decision.

07/08/2016 VEGAN SNEAKERS MADE ENTIRELY OF WOOD

Oddity Central shared the news that nat-2, a German shoe company, has released the world's first vegan wooden sneakers. Comprised of 90% sustainable ash, birch, maple, tulip tree, walnut, cherry, elm, and beech wood varieties, the company has mastered a new product line that's challenging the current eco-footwear status quo. Cork insoles, animal-free glues, and rubber are also crafted in to each pair currently produced in the vegan shoe capital of the world; Italy. In a press release, nat-2 explains how it's made; "the wood is applied to an organic cotton and vector engraved in a way that the material bends and becomes soft and flexible like a fine nappa leather. The feel is very smooth and fine, while you can smell the wood and see the tree's natural texture." The wood used is also FSC certified, which guarantees it's traceability and origin. (ecorazzi.com)

07/07/2016 CHIMPS FILMED GRIEVING FOR DEAD FRIEND

A unique, remarkable and intimate film may change the way we think about animals, and their ability to feel grief. The newly-published film captures the solemn reactions of a group of chimpanzees who discover the dead body of a friend. For 20 minutes, the chimpanzees quietly gather around their friend, despite offers of food to tempt them away. They gently touch and sniff his body, with chimps who were closer friends with the deceased appearing to be the most upset. The incident occurred at the Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage Trust in the Copperbelt region of northwestern Zambia. Chimps living here had been either rescued from the illegal wildlife trade years earlier, or born into the community since. The ape that died was a 9-year-old chimpanzee known to human observers as Thomas. He lived in a group of 43 chimpanzees, in a large outdoor enclosure full of dense forest. (bbc.com)

07/06/2016 MEAT-FREE DAYS UP 80 PERCENT AMONGST SWEDISH KIDS

According to Swedish news source The Local, the popularity of meat-free days in Swedish schools has increased by 80 percent during a two-year period. Lund University and the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions analyzed an environmental survey sent to all Swedish districts by environmental magazine Aktuell Hållbarhet. Districts were scored on their adherence to environmental policies, including the promotion of meat-free days in schools. Meatless Monday campaigns have found success stateside with many students at schools such as Stanford University and districts across California, Philadelphia, and Ohio ditching meat in favor of plant-based foods.

07/05/2016 OBAMA SIGNS GROUNDBREAKING ANIMAL TESTING LAW

President Barack Obama signed a new law that will set unprecedented protections for animals by restricting animal testing and requiring regulators to develop new technology-based alternatives. The Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act updates the 40-year-old Toxic Substances Control Act of 1976, forces non-animal tests to be used whenever possible, and establishes a precedent for the developing of animal-free testing, such as in vitro and in silico methods. "The Lautenberg Act is a meaningful step forward for public safety because it promotes superior, human-relevant chemical test methods over slow, costly and unreliable tests on animals," Kristie Sullivan, MPH, vice president of toxicology for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, said.

07/04/2016 NO MORE KILLED ANIMALS IN U.S. MEDICAL SCHOOLS

A week ago, the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Chattanooga quietly marked the end of the controversial practice of using live animals to teach surgical skills to students, and by extension its elimination in the United States and Canada. "Effective immediately, the University of Tennessee College of Medicine Chattanooga has ceased to provide surgical skills training for medical students using live animal models," Robert Fore, its dean, wrote to the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, which has fought the practice for more than a decade. Fore said UT Chattanooga will follow nearly 200 other medical schools in the two countries that now rely on surgery simulation and other technology that has rendered the use of dogs, cats and pigs obsolete. Johns Hopkins University Medical School ended its use of live pigs for laboratory classes only a few weeks before the Tennessee school.

07/01/2016 MINK FUR FARM IN FLANDERS SHUTS DOWN

Last February, Belgian animal protection organization GAIA together with sister organizations Animal Rights, Bite Back, Stop Dierenmishandeling and Animaux en Péril protested to demand the closure of the local fur farm in Langemark. Undercover footage from Animal Rights revealed neglected, injured and shrieking, agonized mink in deplorable conditions in the former brick-yard at Langemark. A survey conducted by research bureau IPSOS in 2015, clearly shows that 85% of the Flemish population are in favour of a definite ban on fur farms. Although the owner of the mink farm in Langemark has decided to cease his activities, 16 fur farms still remain in operation in Flanders today.
