03/27/2019 SOUTH AMERICA'S LARGEST EGG PRODUCER DEBUTS VEGAN EGGS

Brazil-based Grupo Mantiqueira—South America's largest egg producer—recently developed N.Ovo, a vegan egg replacer, to meet the growing demand for plant-based products in the region. The pea protein-based egg replacer will be sold in cartons that mimic the company's traditional eggs and can be used as a one-for-one substitute in baked goods that call for eggs. The company worked closely with United States-based non-profit organization The Good Food Institute (GFI) to develop the vegan alternative. N.Ovo will be available at supermarket chains and smaller retailers in the region and, eventually, as part of the egg company's home egg delivery service Clube do Ovo. Last year, GFI published a report that found that nearly 30 percent of Brazilians (approximately 60 million people) are actively reducing their consumption of animal products. (vegnews.com)

03/25/2019 MORGAN FREEMAN TURNS HIS 124-ACRE RANCH INTO BEE SANCTUARY

Iconic actor Morgan Freeman recently converted his 124-acre ranch in Mississippi into a bee sanctuary. The actor first began caring for bees in 2014 and recently imported 26 beehives from an Arkansas farm to expand his insect sanctuary. At the ranch, Freeman feeds the bees and allows them to engage in their activities as pollinators without harvesting their honey. "There is a concerted effort for bringing bees back onto the planet," Freeman said during an interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Show. "We do not realize that they are the foundation, I think, of the growth of the planet, the vegetation. . . ." The actor is planting bee-friendly vegetation such as magnolia trees, clover, and lavender to help the bees thrive. "I have not ever used the beekeeping hat with my bees," Freeman said. "They haven’t stung me yet, as right now I am not trying to harvest honey or anything, but I just feed them . . . I also think that they understand, 'Hey, don't bother this guy, he's got sugar water here.'" (vegnews.com)

03/22/2019 NEW YORK BILL PUSHES TO BAN FUR BY 2021

This month, New York assemblywoman and animal-rights activist Linda Rosenthal introduced new legislation that would ban the sale and production of fur statewide by 2021. "Increasingly, consumers are looking to make ethical and sustainable purchases—fur is neither of those," Rosenthal said. "The fur trade has at its core a violence toward animals that is antithetical with our modern views on animals as human companions and sentient beings." Fur bans are currently in effect in several California cities, including West Hollywood, Berkeley, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. In December, assemblywoman Laura Friedman proposed California State Fur Ban (AB 44) which passed its first hearing, 8 to 4, in front of the California Assembly's Water, Parks, and Wildlife Committee on March 12. 03/21/2019 6.5 MILLION CANADIANS ARE DITCHING MEAT

A total of approximately 6.5 million Canadians (20 percent of the population) are actively reducing, or completely eliminating, their consumption of meat, according to a study conducted by Dalhousie University and the University of Guelph. The researchers were interested in discovering how Canadians were responding to the 2019 Canada Food Guide—which de-emphasizes the consumption of meat and dairy, instead recommending that Canadians focus on plant-based sources of protein. The researchers uncovered that 1.3 million people in Canada now identify as vegetarian and 466,000 as vegan, both representing the highest numbers in those categories recorded in Canada. The majority of the vegetarian population is male while the majority of the vegan population is female and the bulk of each category is comprised of people under the age of 39. In February, several regions in Canada reported tofu shortages as a result of the new Food Guide. (vegnews.com)

03/18/2019 SEAWORLD PROFITS PLUMMET 84 PERCENT

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, SeaWorld's second quarter profits plummeted from $37.4 million in 2014 to $5.8 million this year, a drop of 84 percent. This decrease has been attributed to the combined effects of CNN's 2013 documentary Blackfish—which exposed animal suffering at the aquatic park—and numerous campaigns and lawsuits against SeaWorld organized by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). With its stock sinking, SeaWorld has been struggling to rebuild its brand in order to increase attendance. In July, a SeaWorld employee was placed on leave after allegedly posing as a PETA animal-rights activist in an effort to incite illegal activity and relay information back to the theme park. While the current leadership is desperate to rebuild SeaWorld's brand, even promising to invest $100 million to expand whale tanks at its San Diego location, PETA recently called upon SeaWorld CEO Joel Manby to "seriously consider proposals to retire SeaWorld's orcas to sea pen sanctuaries rather than spend millions that the company no longer has to build bigger cages." 03/15/2019 LUKE HEMSWORTH'S NEW FLICK WAS MADE ON ALL-VEGAN SET

New film We Are Boats was made on an all-vegan set. According to producer James Bird, the film is the first to abstain from using animal products on set in both food and wardrobe. The movie features a 50 percent female (and 41 percent POC) cast, a female composer, and includes Westworld actors Angela Sarafyan and Luke Hemsworth and Orange is the New Black star Uzo Aduba. The plot revolves around Francesca (played by Sarafyan), a prostitute who dies at the hands of a client and returns to the living world to guide others on earth through difficult times with the promise of being rewarded an opportunity to say goodbye to a loved one if she succeeds. "We Are Boats is a film about life, death, friendship, and true love," Bird told media outlet Variety. The film premiered at the AFI Cannes film festival and won the best feature film award before being presented at the Napa Valley Film Festival, Santa Fe Film Festival, and Orlando Film Festival. We Are Boats was released on March 8 (International Women’s Day) in limited theaters and will be available on DVD in April. (vegnews.com)

03/13/2019 ALL 1,700 NYC PUBLIC SCHOOLS ADOPT MEATLESS MONDAYS

On March 11, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams announced that all 1,700 NYC public schools will serve meatless meals every Monday—with many schools offering vegan options. "Cutting back on meat a little will improve New Yorkers' health and reduce greenhouse gas emissions," de Blasio said. "We're expanding Meatless Mondays to all public schools to keep our lunch and planet green for generations to come." In 2017, Adams worked with de Blasio to institute Meatless Mondays at several schools in his borough. "We have come a long way. We went from fifteen schools in Brooklyn to every school in NYC participating in Meatless Mondays," Adams told VegNews. "This will impact tens of millions of school meals a year and move us along the spectrum toward improving the health of kids and of the planet." The implementation of the new menu on Mondays will be cost-neutral and give 1.1 million children access to vegetarian meals. (vegnews.com)

03/11/2019 BEYOND MEAT DEBUTS VEGAN GROUND BEEF

Vegan company Beyond Meat will debut plant-based ground beef Beyond Beef at retailers this year. The new product was created to displace traditional ground beef—the largest segment in the beef industry—and is made from a blend of pea, mung bean, and rice proteins that mimic the texture of its animal-derived counterpart and can be used in recipes such as meatballs, tacos, and chili. "We've long had our eye on creating a product that enables consumers to enjoy all the benefits and versatility of ground beef while tapping into the human health, environmental, and animal welfare benefits of plant-based foods," Beyond Meat CEO Ethan Brown said. "As is our commitment, we've built this latest addition to our family of plant-based meats while being thoughtful about ingredient choices that support everyday use by the whole family, including strict avoidance of GMOs, soy, or gluten." Beyond Meat's products are currently on the menu at 35,000 points of distribution worldwide, including A&W Canada, Carl's Jr., and TGI Fridays. (vegnews.com)

03/08/2019 CALIFORNIA MAY BECOME THE FIRST STATE TO BAN ANIMAL DISSECTION

A bill recently introduced to the California State Assembly proposes a ban of animal dissections at all California schools. The Replacing Animals in Science Education Act (AB 1586) aims to update science education in the state by replacing animal-dissection activities with humane teaching methods that align with industry standards and best practices. The bill was introduced by Assembly Member Ash Kalra and co-sponsor advocacy groups Social Compassion in Legislation, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. "Advancements in educational technology have expanded access to this important scientific instructional methodology without having to rely on animals," Kalra said. "With the development of technological alternatives, virtual and computer-based science teaching practicum offer more humane teaching methods that help to better prepare students for higher education and careers in science." Last month, another bill introduced in California would help schools become even more vegan-friendly by providing extra funding to schools that add or increase the number of vegan entrées and plant-based milks on their menus. 03/07/2019 JEFF BEZOS BACKS $30 MILLION INVESTEMNT IN VEGAN TECH STARTUP THAT AIMS TO MAKE ANIMAL PRODUCTS OBSOLETE

Chilean vegan startup The Not Company ("NotCo") recently raised $30 million in investment capital from several funds, including from funds controlled by Amazon-founder Jeff Bezos. Founded in 2015 by biotech engineer Matías Muchnick, biochemist Pablo Zamora, and computer scientist Karim Pichara, NotCo's products rely on "Guiseppe"—a discovery platform that identifies plant-based proteins that can mimic animal products. "NotCo is the epitome of a mission-driven challenger brand and has the energy and capabilities to topple the traditional food production giants. Their advanced thinking combines food tech, machine AI, and plant-based ingredients to create a sustainable non-animal protein source," Eli Sceti, co-founder of The Craftery, a $300 million mission-driven fund that led the investment in NotCo, said. Currently, the company distributes its chickpea-based Not Mayo at more 1,000 retailers in Chile and plans to use the current funding round to develop new products (such as vegan ice cream, yogurt, and milk) and expand its distribution channels to Mexico and the United States by the end of the year. 03/04/2019 CHEF CREATES VEGAN DANISH BLUE CHEESE FROM FERMENTED OATS

A vegan Danish blue cheese made from fermented oats was recently developed by research chef Maynard Kolskog at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology's new Centre for Culinary Innovation. The cheese, made using oats, probiotics, and nutritional yeast, is part of a two-year research partnership with the University of Alberta and Canada's Prairie Oat Growers Association to create new products from fractionated oats—where the whole grain is separated into oat protein and fiber through dry milling. The goal of the research project isn't just to help Canadian oat producers find new uses for their crop, but also to satisfy the public's growing appetite for plant-based food. Kolskog is still working to improve the texture and mouthfeel of the oat-based blue cheese and plans to incorporate cold-pressed canola oil to perfect the product. In addition to his work with oats, Kolskog has helped the University of Alberta develop a plant-based ice cream using lentils and barley, and industry partners turn pulses into soy- and gluten-free vegan meat. 03/01/2019 LOS ANGELES DODGERS DITCH DAIRY

A number of top professional baseball players for the Los Angeles Dodgers have recently denounced dairy, according to The Athletic, Dodgers Nation, and SBNation. The trend was sparked by Dodgers second baseman Chase Utley—who announced his intent to retire in 2018—when he removed dairy from his diet several years ago. In 2017, centerfielder Enrique Javier Hernández also stopped consuming dairy followed by shortstop Corey Seager who went dairy-free in 2018 and lost nearly 30 pounds. First baseman Max Muncy, a breakout star on the team, recently eschewed dairy as well, and credits his improved performance to the dietary change. "That right there is a selling point for me," Muncy told The Athletic. "You're talking about playing 162 games in 180 days. You're talking about wearing cleats for all of those, which hurts your feet. Everything hurts. Anything you can do to gain an edge and make your body feel better on a daily basis, why wouldn't you try it?" Clothing company BreakingT created a new T-shirt to commemorate the trend which reads "Los Angeles Dairy Free," with names of players that have stopped consuming dairy written in a Dodgers-style font—an officially licensed product of the Major League Baseball Players Association.
