03/31/2016 LEO DICAPRIO GIVES SEYCHELLES $1M TO START LARGEST MARINE SANCTUARY

Winning an Oscar was a nice achievement for Leo, but his biggest long-term goal has been to help humanity avoid climate change. He's become one of the most visible global advocates for environmental sustainability and conservation and his efforts have only increased over the years. When he finally won an Oscar last month, he used his speech to call for global climate action. Just the other day, the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation gave a $1 million grant to the archipelago nation Seychelles for marine conservation. Just since 2010, his foundation has distributed more than $30 million USD in grants to more than 65 organizations in more than 40 countries. This latest grant is part of an innovative debt focused scheme involving numerous parties. If effective, it could be a blueprint for how to address environmental problems in the future.

03/30/2016 SECOND ANIMAL RIGHTS ACTIVIST SENTENCED IN ILLINOIS MINK FARM CASE

Tyler Lang, an animal rights activist from California, was sentenced last Wednesday for his involvement in freeing 2,000 minks from an Illinois fur farm in 2013. U.S. District Judge Amy St. Eve sentenced Lang to three months time already served, six months of house arrest, six months community confinement and one year of supervised release. He is also required to make a $200,000 restitution payment to the farm operators. Lang and his friend Kevin Johnson, also from California, were accused of freeing the minks from a Morris fur farm and spray painting "liberation is love" on a barn there. The men's actions reportedly resulted in the deaths of hundreds of minks and the farm's closure.

03/25/2016 ADORABLE BOY BEGS HIS MOM NOT TO COOK A CHICKEN IN TOUCHING VIDEO

A young Brazilian boy's heart was broken after he seemed to have figured out where his chicken dinner actually came from. "Leave her alone," the boy, named Vitor, begged his mom in Portuguese while crying and promising that he would "take care of her." But Vitor was a little bit too late to save it as the raw chicken in the pan that he was trying to lovingly protect by holding on to it had no head and was already dead, which his mother pointed out to him. Even so, after many crocodile tears and pleas from Vitor, eventually, his mom agreed not to cook the chicken. Vitor's emotional pleas and enormous empathy for an animal is incredibly touching. Hopefully, if he does decide he wants to take care of chickens in the future, he'll learn that if you're able to commit to the care that they need, the intelligent birds can make wonderful companion animals. 03/25/2016 VEGAN OPTIONS ON CAMPUS THANKS TO EFFORTS OF A LONE VEGAN STUDENT

Because of the efforts of a single vegan student, the University of Manchester is now offering a vegan menu in it's dining halls. While vegan food in a college doesn't seem like big news, it's awesome to watch young vegan activists and youth fight for their own rights, and the rights of animals everywhere. Aless Donebauer, 18, is a mathematics student at the University. "Hopefully the new menus will help educate people as to how veganism is great for not just the animals, but also the environment and our health," she told the Mirror. Donebauer cited sustainability and ethics when she took her ideas for a vegan menu to the dining team and won a small victory for herself and future campus vegans. Miles Kitchiner, the head of catering, says that the new menus are very successful. "It's been very well received that we're providing the choice and the variety to all students. We've found that non-vegan people are also enjoying the dishes, so it's a win-win."

03/24/2016 VEGGIE DIET COULD SAVE MILLIONS OF LIVES

Millions of lives could be saved annually by the year 2050 if people adopt vegetarian diets. Cutting down on meat consumption worldwide would also protect the planet by cutting emissions by two thirds, and avoid over $1trillion in costs linked to climate change and healthcare, according to research published in by Oxford University. Dr Marco Springmann, lead author of the study conducted at the Oxford Martin Programme on the Future of Food, said: "Imbalanced diets, such as diets low in fruits and vegetables, and high in red and processed meat, are responsible for the greatest health burden globally and in most regions. At the same time the food system is also responsible for more than a quarter of all greenhouse gas emissions, and therefore a major driver of climate change." Researchers found that leading a vegan lifestyle would save 8.1million lives by 2050, while vegetarianism could save 7.3 million. (independent.co.uk)

03/23/2016 PHILADELPHIA GETS ON THE VEGAN DONUT BANDWAGON

CBS Philly reports that the donut purveyors, who have attained a cult following from featuring their treats wholesale in local cafes, have debuted their own shop.  On March 18, they opened the doors at 4529 Springfield Avenue, serving an array of their classics and hot drinks, from 7-3 P.M. daily. Co-owner Jeff Poleon told CBS that the team uses coconut milk and a corn and tapioca starch egg replacer to make sure people can't tell their donuts apart from non-vegan ones. And as far as flavours go, he said, "we've got a powdered sugar, we've got a classic vanilla bean glaze, cinnamon sugar, coconut milk chocolate, lemon poppy, Earl Grey, milk chocolate with roasted cacao. The green one is matcha pistachio." Just another example of how vegan donuts are setting the trend this year! And it's clear customers are happy, with a post boasting that around 1500 donuts were consumed on their second day in the new location. (ecorazzi.com)

03/22/2016 CHINA FINALLY SETTING GUIDELINES FOR TREATING LAB ANIMALS

China has released its first national standards governing the treatment of laboratory animals. The draft standards were posted last week for public comment and could be implemented by the end of this year. They cover such topics as euthanasia, pain management, transport, and housing. The standards also set requirements for breeding facilities and personnel training. Chinese scientists have said the lack of national regulations has stymied some international collaborations because scientists in other countries can be reluctant to engage in research involving animals if they are not covered by humane protections. In addition, there is growing domestic opposition to the mistreatment of lab animals because of recently documented incidents of abuse. China uses roughly 20 million animals—mostly mice, but also large numbers of dogs, rabbits, and nonhuman primates—each year in research. More than 300,000 people work in the lab animal industry in China. (sciencemag.org)

03/21/2016 THE FLORIDA JAIL THAT IS ALSO AN ANIMAL SHELTER

Usually the word "jail" brings some harsh imagery to mind, but that's not the case in the Key West. Ask a local about the jail, and the most likely image is Mo, an adorable and charismatic sloth who's become the unofficial mascot of the Stock Island Detention Center, which doubles as a sanctuary for unwanted animals. "All the animals here are either abandoned, abused, confiscated or donated," Jeanne Selander, the caretaker for the facility, explains to Care2. "The animals are here because they need a forever home and we give them one." Among the facility's residents are: Boots, a small alligator whose original owner didn't want to pay for his vet bills after he ate the silicone lining in his tank; Fat Albert, an African spurred tortoise who escaped his guardians' home and was found wandering around town; and Bam Bam, an abandoned miniature horse. In total, the prison holds 150 animals and up to 596 prisoners. Five of the latter get to work with the animals as volunteers.

03/18/2016 SEAWORLD TO END BREEDING PROGRAM FOR KILLER WHALES

SeaWorld announced Thursday it will end its killer whale breeding programs and take a "new direction" amid changing social attitudes. The company said the 24 orcas it currently has in three parks would be SeaWorld's last generation, a long awaited move following intense criticism from animal-rights campaigners over keeping the whales in captivity. Joel Manby, president and CEO of SeaWorld, wrote in an op-ed article in the Los Angeles Times that its existing whales would remain in captivity because setting them free in the wild was "not a wise option."  Manby said the SeaWorld hasn't collected an orca from the wild in almost four decades and that this would be "the last generation of orcas in SeaWorld's care." The 24 orcas SeaWorld currently has are at parks in California, Texas and Florida. (nbcnews.com)

03/17/2016 SWITZERLAND COMMITS TO END SALE OF CRUEL COSMETICS

The Swiss government announced it will ban the sale of cosmetics containing ingredients newly tested on animals. The announcement comes in response to a motion introduced by Green Party parliamentarian Maya Graf and if passed would make Switzerland the 35th country to take legal action to stem the trade in animal-tested consumer products since Humane Society International launched its global #BeCrueltyFree campaign in 2012. The world's largest beauty products market, the European Union, together with Norway, Israel, India, New Zealand, Turkey, South Korea and several states in Brazil, have already enacted full or partial bans on animal testing for cosmetic products and ingredients. Similar legislation is pending in the United States, Canada, Brazil, Taiwan, Australia, Argentina and elsewhere under the leadership of #BeCrueltyFree campaign teams.

03/15/2016 VEGAN SETS NEW GUINESS WORLD PUSHUP RECORD

A 45-year-old vegan in India has broken a Guinness World Record by performing 82 knuckle push-ups in one minute. Hailing from the coastal state of Kerala in southern India, KJ Joseph—an Ayurvedic practitioner—completed the extreme fitness challenge last month and bested the efforts of previous record-holder Ron Cooper of New York, who completed 79 pushups in 2015. Officials of Guinness World Records are in the process of validating the achievement, but Joseph holds several other accomplishments, including being entered into the Universal Record Forum for doing 2,092 pushups in an hour and for breaking iron bars with his bare hands—all without the need for animal protein.

03/14/2016 COSTA RICA MOVES TO SET PRISON SENTENCES FOR ANIMAL CRUELTY

The Legislative Assembly's environmental affairs committee on March 3 approved the draft Animal Welfare Bill, which sets harsher punishments, including prison time, for abusing or killing animals. The bill would also penalize bestiality and organized animal fights. The draft bill was submitted by lawmakers from the previous legislative period, but its discussion and approval began just over two years ago. Among its main provisions, the bill sets prison penalties for animal cruelty and also penalizes some activities deemed cruel such as animal fighting.

03/11/2016 NEARLY 300 SPANISH TOWNS BAN ANIMAL CIRCUSES

Nearly 300 Spanish towns have now said "adios" to animal circuses, with the region of Catalonia leading the way when it comes to banning the controversial form of entertainment. Barcelona, Girona, Lleida and Tarragona are among the Catalan cities that have already banned the practice, while elsewhere in Spain, cities such as Alicante, Palma de Mallorca, Cordoba and Malaga have also banned the circuses. Mogán, in Gran Canaria, became the latest town to ban the practice when all political parties approved a motion brought by the conservative Popular Party on Friday. It brings the total number of towns that have banned animal circuses to 275, according to Infocircos, a coalition of animal rights charities including the Born Free Foundation.

03/10/2016 VEGAN DIET "CAN CUT RISK OF PROSTATE CANCER BY 35 PER CENT"

Leading a vegan lifestyle can cut the risk of prostate cancer by 35 per cent, a new study has suggested. A vegan diet is void of all animal products and is instead based entirely on plant foods, including fruit, vegetables, nuts and grains. The US researches behind the findings used data on over 26,000 men to study how omnivorous and plant-based diets affected the chances of developing prostate cancer. In total, 1,079 cases of prostate cancer were reported in the group, with around 8 per cent of those in men with a vegan diet. The researchers at Loma Linda University in California found a 35 per cent reduction in prostate cancer risk in men who followed a vegan diet, which they called "statistically significant". Professor Gary Fraser, who led the study funded by the World Cancer Research Fund, said: "This new research makes a significant step in linking a vegan diet to reduced prostate cancer risk."

03/10/2016 AMERICAN FIRST VEGAN-CERTIFIED FARM IS BOOMING IN PHILLY

Metropolis Farms is not only the first indoor hydroponic vertical farm in Philadelphia, it's the first vegan-certified farm in the nation and the only known vertical farm to operate on the second floor of a building. A vegan farm means no pesticides, herbicides, animal manure and animal bi-products. The company boasts that they were certified under the rigorous standards of the American Vegetarian Association. Using artificial lighting, climate control and other patented farming techniques, stacks of plants flourish in tall towers inside the South Water Street building. The farm also reduces its energy output through the use of robotics and hopes to transition to solar energy soon. Metropolis Farms grows herbs, greens, tomatoes and more crops year round in a very small space—about 120,000 plants in only 36 square feet—and with a lot less water by using hydroponics. The farm claims to use 98 percent less water since it just recirculates and 82 percent less energy compared to conventional and organic farms. (ecowatch.com)

03/09/2016 "VEGAN ANARCHIST" SAVES FREEZING, INJURED DOG

During one of the coldest nights last month, a 1-year-old dog stumbled through the woods and up to Robert Inhuman's home in Cincinnati. Inhuman tracked down the dog's guardians and learned he was named Blue. He also found out Blue was seriously injured, and that the dog's guardian couldn't afford medical care. Blue, the guardian told Inhuman, was going to be euthanized. "I'm a vegan anarchist with a very strong belief in animal liberation," he said, "so any opportunity to help innocent animal life is the core of my life philosophy." With the help of about 50 people, Inhuman raised about $1,300 to pay for treatment on Blue's broken femur, along with dental work and neutering. He said his schedule won't allow him keep the dog permanently, so he's hoping somebody else can give Blue a forever home.

03/08/2016 SILVIO BERLUSCONI IS BECOMING A VEGETARIAN DUE TO HIS CONCERN FOR ANIMAL WELFARE

Silvio Berlusconi, Italy's disgraced former prime minister, has surprised even his closest friends by announcing he is becoming a vegetarian. The 79-year-old billionaire, who is best known for his gaffes and seemingly insatiable appetite for the company of younger women, has now declared that his concern for animal welfare means that meat is off the menu. The TV mogul has now told colleagues in his Forza Italia party: "Animals are marvellous creatures. How can we kill them? How can we eat them?" The first hint of Berlusconi’s interest in animal rights came in 2014, when he tried in vain to revive the fortunes of his ailing political party with a pledge, ahead of European elections, of new cash to sponsor homes for stray cats and dogs.

03/07/2016 FRENCH ABBATOIR CLOSED AFTER SECRET VIDEO SHOWS SUSPECTED ANIMAL CRUELTY

A French abattoir certified as organic has been closed pending an investigation after an animal rights group released a video purportedly showing the abuse of livestock. L214 published the four-minute video on its website, claiming to have secretly filmed it at the slaughterhouse in Le Vigan in the southern Gard region. Scenes include employees Tasering livestock, hurling sheep against barriers, hanging pigs by one leg, and pulling a cow by one horn. Many cattle and pigs, normally stunned to death before their throats are slit, can be seen still moving as they are being bled. The agency that manages the abattoir said the facility was closed until further notice and staff had been suspended. It added that an internal investigation would be conducted.

03/04/2016 HARRY POTTER'S EVANNA LYNCH ON BEING VEGAN

While speaking at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland last week, Evanna Lynch spoke highly of being an ethical vegan while accepting an award at the College Historical Society. She began her talk by explaining the environmental reasons for veganism. She cited animal agriculture as being the primary contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, world hunger, deforestation, species extinction, as well as others. She believes this is an issue ''you cannot afford not to address'' due to the adverse effects of over consuming meat and animal products. After explaining that she didn’t go vegan for environmental reasons, she told the audience, ''killing and eating animals is a betrayal of our own core humanity,'' and told the audience that they ought to ''check [that their] practices align with [their] principles.'' 03/03/2016 IS PINEAPPLE LEATHER THE FUTURE OF FASHION?

The ''leather'' industry is being redefined with sustainable vegan materials that will replace cow and dog skin permanently. Piñatex is a natural and sustainable nonwoven textile made from pineapple leaf fibers, which are both eco-friendly and biodegradable. The transformation into usable vegan leather occurs as the leaves are degummed and made into a luxe mesh material that feels similar to felt. The process also creates a biomass by-product that can be converted into fertilizer, thus giving pineapple farmers additional income. And in addition to its attractive aesthetics, pineapple leather is super-sustainable and does not involve the use of any additional water, pesticides, or fertilizer beyond what is needed to cultivate pineapples for consumption. 03/02/2016 275TH CITY IN SPAIN VOTE TO BAN ANIMAL CIRCUSES

The Spanish town of Mogán has become the latest town in the country to take a stand for animals after all political parties approved a motion to declare itself a ''city free of animal circuses'' was adopted unanimously last week. The declaration makes it the sixth city in its region to adopt such a pledge and the 275th in all of Spain. Mógan joins Barcelona, Cordoba, Malaga, and Catalonia (which has also banned bullfighting) in its refusal of cruel animal captivity and entertainment. The development comes on the heels other major cities and states adopting similar bans in just the past year, including Warsaw, Hawaii, and The Netherlands. (vegnews.com)

03/01/2016 VEGANISM IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN SOLAR CARS

Advocating veganism in contrast to the environmental impact that animal consumption is having on climate change, professional race car driver Leilani Münter talks about how solar cars don’t have as big an impact as what we eat. A Tesla rep with a boasted 33,000 miles traveled by electric car, she often mentions her solar panel roof as having her drive on sunshine. Still she says, “But cutting down on fossil fuel emissions alone is not enough to reduce one’s carbon footprint. Currently, one-third of all the arable land on the planet is being used to grow feed for livestock. Combined with the animals themselves, this means that the production of meat is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions.” She goes on to expose beef production as emitting 150 more greenhouse gasses than soy, a fact she correctly considers hidden.
