Thoughts About Companion Animals
Golden Drops of Bare Truths
Faith (Granny) Senior
"Don't breed or buy while other pets die! Boycott pet shops and all breeders. Adopt an adult dog or cat from a good shelter FOR LIFE! Mixed breeds make the best pets!" (Pet Gazette)
Faith (Granny) Senior
"Warning! Laboratories prefer your pet for research torture 'they're easier to handle'." (Pet Gazette)
Animals' Voice Magazine
"'Litter': just another word for trash!" [Always Spay/Neuter! A. Pisarevsky] (quoted in CONTACT Magazine)
"Warning! Pet-napping is a multi-million dollar business and YOUR pets are potential victims! Leaving them unattended, even for a very short time, makes them easy targets for a shrewd/quick/expert thief who will sell them to the hellish research laboratories!"
"Sun-heated metal car tops will kill your pets in the car almost immediately even with windows opened! Even if the car is under the shade!"
"When you mistreat and/or abandon your pets because you 'no longer need them', your children will do likewise with you when you grow old and if you become handicapped... Also, homeless animals are not criminals! Help them! Do not run them over on highways or streets; stop your car and wait. Those who abuse animals rarely stop there! The dad/mom who kicks the dog/cat will do the same to a person. Studies show people who abuse their pets abuse any kids! Including their own!!!"
"Shouting at/showing anger to your pets/other animals (let alone hitting/beating them up!), or yanking them from their throats or sticking their faces into their 'mistakes'... is a monstrous cruelty and doesn't train them. They don't know why they're punished and not only do they suffer from it physically and mentally but will have an existence of intimidation... as slaves do... and this is NO LIFE FOR ANYONE! They don't do 'wrong' - it's the nature of their species. If you can't live with pets giving them all concessions to accommodate them, then please... DO NOT HAVE THEM!"
"All animal breeders contribute to the animal overpopulation problem, since the animals they breed/sell take homes away from healthy, adoptable shelter and/or street animals. Thirty percent of 'purebred' animals end up in animal shelters, as well as declawed cats. Millions of unwanted animals are NOT being 'put to sleep' - they won't wake up, they've been killed!!! Help stop ANY breeding for ANY reason whatsoever!"
"Let's try fiercely hard to abolish all kinds of pet breeding from ALL breeding places by making it the A-1 priority of societies/activists who truly want to stop this national shame! If the adoption/ rescuing programs and other related 'not for profit' businesses become profitable careers for anyone or are used just to fill a gap in their lives rather than fight against all breeding, then... THEY DON'T BELONG IN THIS MOVEMENT!!!"
"To put an end by mercy killing to the suffering of a creature when that suffering cannot be alleviated, is more ethical than to stand aloof from it."
"'Pet' - A living being snatched from family/habitat/freedom, becoming ANYONE'S property: (SLAVERY)! Bizarre crossbreeding causing many illnesses/deformities disregarding physical/mental suffering, for easy/cheap (or expensive) sale/ exhibition. WHO IF NOT A SLAVE is bred, bought, sold, owned/ used, held captive, mutilating their paws, ears, tails, other, for convenience, looks, pulled by a leash (jerking from the throat as obedience schools teach!!!???) A plaything made to pay for humans' frustrations/ inadequacies/'needs'. Given as babies to children who torment/ crush them to death. Used as weapons to guard houses lonely/ outside/who may get shot/poisoned. Forced to ridiculous human ways/fed cheapest and/or wrong food...when owner remembers/ feels like. If dogs, ordered to sit/ stand/sleep/walk/ run...defecate on command!!! Most humans are out a lot and many have only one solitary creature who must endure loneliness/ depression/ boredom so that humans can enjoy a 'living thing' when they come home, who may be left alone for long terms on dry food/stale water or in a kennel where the pet may come out sick in body/spirit. If ill/old/ injured/no longer keeps 'etiquette', may be abandoned or 'free to a good home' to avoid bother/big vet's bills just when more loving/ understanding is most needed (after serving all h/her life!). Carnivorous pets converted to veges: confused dreamers of lions/ lambs sleeping together, so they impose their dreams on captive carnivorous slaves! IT'S HUMANS WE MUST CONVERT!!! How absolutely dreadful/obscene, for a being's entire physical/ spiritual life to be forced to such total dependency on anyone who'll buy/catch h/her, and that only a handful of humans give their pets, at least, a life as close to their natural lives as possible!!! Now exotic/wild baby animals are marketed for 'pets' thru the infamous pet stores/black market! When they grow big/revive their original instincts, they're subjected to 'convenience' surgery and/or restricting devices... or quickly abandoned or sold!!! A pet by any other name is still a used domestic being, and what's called a human who owns and uses a being??? Owning pets promotes 100s of profitable businesses that invent pet 'necessities' many times detrimental to them. The sacrificial work kind rescuers do gives pet abandoners the excuse: 'A kind soul will give it a good home!' I do hope animal groups will campaign fiercely to abolish professional breeders/start making public the truth that humans don't deserve to live with animals! Shocking??? Never as much as what 'animal lovers' do to ALL non-human slaves!"
"Jainism (one of few vegetarian religions) contains a tacit prohibition against keeping animals as pets because they do not believe in interfering in the lives of other creatures, let alone turning them into domestic playthings." (The Four Vegetarian Asian Religions and Their Impact on the West)
"Animal Collectors. Kind but confused people may hold up to 50 or more strays in an apartment (that may be small), quick to adopt out to whoever gets convinced at the time so as to relieve themselves of the burden. Impossible to care for so many, conditions of the apt. AND the strays become abominable and the animals are not any better than on the streets... Odor/noises make neighbors report to police and pets must be surrendered to brutal ultimatum! Some cures hurt more than the malady! Heart alone is not enough, we must apply our minds too!"
Sarasota in Defense of Animals
"Puppy Mills. Backyard breeding factories that churn out unlimited puppies for sale! Forced to breed too soon nonstop without rest between heat cycles, until they drop dead! Malnutrition/ starvation/sickness: frequent causes of death of mothers/litters but if not producing enough litters females are killed or just left to die, as well as the male dogs, to save money/ forced starvation make dogs eat newborn puppies/when a bitch is mated and owner finds no market, he puts her in a high cage with holes in the floor so newborn babies plunge straight from uterus to a concrete floor to violent deaths! Puppies as young as 2 weeks old crated/shipped to pet shops even when NOT ordered/ they arrive dead and/or sick/buried in their own vomits/ excrements/pet shops ship them back!!! They don't care: they collect insurance!!! Kept in the most abominable conditions imaginable/raised in filthy tiny cages with wire mesh floors piled up one on top of the other/their bloodied feces and urine falling on the animals below, which are just left there producing intense odor/bacteria/diseases (and overcrowding spreads disease quickly)/shackling the legs of larger dogs to prevent escaping, crippling them for life/under scorching sun/ freezing cold/no veterinary care at all/suffering physical/ behavioral problems due to early removal from mothers/never getting any loving contact so pups develop unsocial behavior as they grow into dogs. Mrs. P. Brooke Rummel, of the ASPCA declared: 'Puppies from mills will mostly grow into vicious, even dangerous pets.'" (SDA News & Views)
"Pet Shops: Beware! Animal treatment here is almost as bad as puppy mills and the vast majority of their animals come from puppy mills. Extraordinary focuses of incredible sadistic greed where, among other horrid acts, unsalable adult 'pets' are left to starve to save money though hidden from the public!!! Watch out for profitable tricks to attract buyers; i.e. 'adoptions', etc., in a pet shop!"
"Amish Country. Owners of the absolutely worst puppy mills in the USA!!! Blasting irony that a Joyce Stolzfus' mill is called 'Puppy Love'! Amish proclaim themselves a kind people from a past era were love/warmth/gentleness prevail, yet not only do they own perverse puppy mills but are fighting MORE than anyone to defend them and shrewdly hide them as they're terrified the public should discover their shameful secret! This Joyce Stolzfus' son wielded a baseball bat against the investigators!" (Act'ionLine)
Godofredo Stutzin, Esq.
"I can't understand people wanting to keep gold fish (or any other kind). Pet shops and street and other fairs are crowded with young people carrying in each hand plastic bags filled with water in which are floating/half asphyxiated/colliding against the walls of the minute prison, fish of very pitiful appearance! The public contributes heavily to these vendors' proliferation, usually giving them away to children - a toy that moves without winding or batteries! A child puts them in a bowl with water and after just a few days forgets/tires and the poor little prisoners are left to struggle between life and death to end up... in a garbage can!" (Cuando los Animales Tenían Voz)
"Beware! Cats crawl under car hoods when cold; bang hard on hood before starting engine!"
Anna Hempstead Branch (1875-1937)
"To a Dog. If there is no God for thee, Then there is no God for me!"
"If neutered animals are 'its', does that make women who have hysterectomies, and men who have vasectomies, 'its' also? Responsible pet owners neuter their pets!" (New Yorkers for Companion Animals)
Phyllis Wright (Humane Society of the U.S.)
"People who let their dogs and cats have litters to show their children the 'miracle of birth' should come witness the 'miracle of death' performed in the back rooms of animal shelters all over the country!"
"Never patronize stores that sell animals. Choose the ones that sell only companion animals supplies." (1998 Calendar)
"Treat me kindly, my beloved friend, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the living heart of me. Do not break my spirit with stick, for though I might lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me learn. Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear. Please take me inside when it is cold and wet, for I am a domesticated animal, no longer accustomed to bitter elements. I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth. Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for I can't tell you when I'm thirsty. Feed me clean food that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life. And, my friend, when I am very old, and I no longer enjoy good health, hearing and sight, do not make heroic efforts to keep me going. I am not having any fun. Please see that my trusting life is taken gently. I shall leave this earth knowing with the last breath I draw that my fate was always safest in your hands." (In Memory of Beau, Quoted by "Dear Abby")
"Animal trainers (read SPIRIT BREAKERS!), torment the poor animals for the owners' convenience who say otherwise they would be homeless! The abundant pet column ads where pets are given to 'good homes' mostly for frivolous reasons, prove even forcing into animals new personalities, against their natures, they still dispose of them, again, for convenience. Dogs: Spike collars (so they walk 'lady-like'), command them to sit/stand/roll over/ be silent/ 'talk'/ 'sing'/cutting their ears/tails/lots more insane commands/devices for these slaves. Monkeys: trained as servant-slaves for quadriplegics ripping off all their teeth/nails/giving electric shocks under their tails if disobeying or slow in serving. Cats: Can't be trained easily, so they cut off their claws bone/flesh/and all so they won't scratch a curtain/couch. More, too long to list. Only truth is: DON'T REINVENT YOUR PETS! GIVE ALL CONCESSIONS TO ACCOMMODATE THEIR SPECIES OR . . . DO NOT HAVE THEM!!!"
"To avoid the infamous animal training and its many tormenting implications (let alone all the other hideous/unending tortures), animal breeding must be stopped! Domesticated/enslaved beings including pets (or 'companion animals' if it mitigates one's guilt) must slowly but firmly be phased out. To respect DIGNITY of life (not life alone), of ALL species we must STOP ALL BREEDING NOW! MEANTIME SPAY/NEUTER ALL PETS! Young/strong groups must push to create a law to stop the desperately cruel puppy/kitty mills then savagely prosecute/ terminate them. ALSO STOP ALL PROFESSIONAL BREEDING FOR ANY REASON: while more 'refined' than the mills, their fancier magazines pose as being kind/helping your pets... while pumping newborns to this unkind world nonstop! For each animal fit for show/pedigree, hundreds, nay, thousands of surplus are born frightfully aggravating today's stray problem! Boycott them! A breeder on TV said: 'We MAKE cats in solid colors/spots/totally hairless' (for allergic humans!!!) exhibiting the frightened cats up in the air with one hand! Recently on 'Lisa' talk show (WNBCTV) cat breeders methodically cripple animals and showed their 'Twisty' cats (bred with front legs longer and all twisted). Another bred cats' front legs extremely shorter so they were forced to walk like a kangaroo! All having visible difficulties in moving and doing other functions! And there were still more doing other insidiously bizarre and most cruel breeding but I couldn't cope and shut the TV off. They said 'There's nothing wrong, we like to experiment with breeding.'"
"Pet food companies and their ad agencies not only mistreat animals in commercial/ entertainment media, but support vivisection/do live experiments themselves too. Yet, many shelters/rescuers/ adoption workers make deals with them for free pet food for their foster animals. The intention is good but the action is not! You can't make deals with the devil and come out clean!"
"Onions (raw, cooked or in powder) are dangerous to cats and dogs because they contain 'thiols.'"
"Anti-freeze. Its sweet taste attracts cats and dogs but even a tiny amount can kill or seriously injure them. Check your car's heater/radiator hoses for cracks/seepage. When adding anti-freeze, use a funnel and clean up any spillage as it evaporates slowly. Keep containers out of reach."
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Texas
"Your pet speaks: My life is likely to last 10/15 (or more?) years; any separation from you will be very painful. Place your trust in me, it's crucial for my well-being. Don't be angry with me and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, friends, entertainment. I have only you! Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I understand your voice. Be aware that however you treat me... I will never forget it... Before you hit me, remember that I have teeth that could easily crush the bones in your hand, but I choose not to bite you. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food? I've been out in the sun too long? My heart may be getting old and weak??? Take care of me when I get old. You, too, will grow old! Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say 'I can't bear to watch,' or 'Let it happen in my absence'. Everything is easier for me if you are there. Remember... I love you!" (Quoted in ARF News)
The Humane Society of the United States
"Older pets may fit perfectly into your life: Less destructive/ more graceful/ already house-broken/may have been neutered/ are just as loving as young animals/lots of love to give and the admirable qualities that come with maturity. Millions of them have to be euthanized at shelters because most people prefer the 'cute' puppies and kittens!"
"Animal breeders for show, alter physical and mental characteristics to set styles and cash in on the novelty! These are the 'high class' puppy and kitty mills! They, MORE than any others, are the cause of overpopulation of stray animals and their unending misery!"
"Training an animal is almost always a painful experience, and abuse is not lacking! If you must train h/him you must witness the entire session each time to avoid abuse. Training for cat and dog shows is sheer torture for the animals who have to endure the trauma of perpetual commands and other preparations. Animals don't know (don't have to know) about humans' stupid antics!"
"Supporting the 'pet' (or animal companion) business gives evil inspiration to ignoramus/indifferent people to expand their pet 'adoptions' to cover exotic animals and torment them, as well as their 'prey', in just unimaginable ways."
Barry Bush, DVM
"Veterinary removal of the claws... is a painful mutilation which cannot be recommended under any circumstances." (PETA's Animal Times)
Faith A. Senior
"Pet Jogging. Turning your dog into a jogging companion may be dangerous for the pet! Like humans, dogs should be in good health and conditioned for such increased activity. At first, combine running with walking then increasing the distance. Avoid traffic accidents by keeping him on a leash. Also beware of pushing him beyond his limit or he'll suffer abrasions, even bleeding, on his pads from running on concrete or asphalt so check his feet often! Also heat prostration, so you must watch out if he lags behind, shows excessive panting, coughing and, finally, stumbling! This calls for IMMEDIATE ATTENTION!!!" (Pet Gazette)
"Pitbull dogs don't deserve their awful reputation and are constantly abused in ways too horrendous to describe! It's NOT the animals' fault! All these intelligent animals want to do is please their owners by responding to the training. These people are insanely cruel, first, to train their animals in the humans ways, and second to train them to be ferocious."
Act-ionLine Magazine (Friends of Animals)
"Those who patronize pet shops which advertise AKC registered puppies (American Kennel Club), mistakenly believe they insure soundness/health/background/ temperament of an animal, and that AKC (and other) registry papers confer status... But, AKC insists it is not their job to care where and how dogs are bred and sold. Do not breed or buy while other pets die!"
"The 5-Ds of commercial pet food ingredients: Decaying, Decomposed, Diseased, Downed, Dying... And now hog hairs are added!"
Animals' Advocate (Animal Legal Defense Fund)
"DO YOU SHIP YOUR PETS??? Animals fly in the baggage-holds which are death traps! There's no ventilation or temperature control and they suffer gruesome deaths due to heat prostration/stroke/suffocation! In a change of planes the caged animals may remain out in the field for hours/days starving/freezing or burning to death and/ or lost or rerouted! There's nothing worse than to suffer claustrophobia and suffocation and/or be crushed to death! The kindest thing for your companion animals is to leave them at home! If you must, take your smaller pets with you in the cabin. Let's stop treating animal companions as luggage!"
"Despicable, repugnant, criminal professional breeders, puppy mills, animal dealers, vivisectors, exhibitors, and yes, pet owners, frequently subject animals to air travel hell for PROFITS!!! Too small boxes/crates made of drafty/ flimsy/ easily broken open/even shoe boxes! Home-made crates with protruding wires/nails inside. Airlines not obligated to give food/water/ exercise. Shipping agents give wrong advice to pet owners for their convenience but murderous to the pets... Commercial shippers paid by consignee if shipment arrives safely, or by insurance if it doesn't. Forwarders accept ANYTHING on commission - sick animals and/or flimsy/ crushable carriers! Cargo compartment temperatures are from 0oF. to 104oF. (Up to 130oF. on the ground!). Animals frequently seen with paws/faces bleeding from cuts trying to get out from that inferno! Cages like coffins with insufficient and small air holes. Crew members, ground personnel, passengers and others comment: 'animals frozen to death, smashed, suffocated, dead from heat/thirst/fear/other...'"
"'Exotic' animals belong in their native homes, not in human homes or businesses. Speak out against the pet shops' trade in exotic animals!" (1998 Calendar)
"Let's not support the 'pet' industry: (breeding/ taming/ domesticating/ training/enslaving/ commercializing animals) - if we do, animal slavery will escalate non-stop in numbers and bizarreness...... LEGALLY!!!"
Arnot L. Sheppard, Jr.
"No person is as generous as your pet dog. Each time he looks at you, he makes you a present of his heart!" [All other species give us that gift too, Adela P.]
Don Young, Fort Smith, AR, "Happenstance"
"The basement apartment
in which I live,
allows me no pets
with love to give.
But the landlord allows
both the spiders and mice,
and to my amazement
it's worked out nice!
While spiders themselves
don't give any hugs,
they all do their part
in catching the bugs!!
We've made an agreement -
myself and the mouse -
so he finds his food
outside of the house.
A strange arrangement,
to say the least,
but to 'live and let live'
brings its own kind of peace."
"I aspire to be the kind of person my dog thinks I am!" (HouseKat in the house)
"Epitaph To A Dog. Near this spot are deposited the remains of one who possessed beauty without vanity, strength without ferocity, and all the virtues of man without his vices. This praise, which would be unmeaning flattery if inscribed over human ashes, is but a just tribute to the memory of Boatswain, a dog who was born at Newfoundland May, 1803, and died at Newstead Abbey November 18, 1808."
Jonathan Leshanski, DVM
"Many plants, particularly holiday plants, such as lilies/mistletoe/holly/etc. are toxic to cats. Most common signs are vomiting and diarrhea often a bit bloody or strange colored. More serious problems are seizures/twitching/kidney damage/neurological reactions. Never dose your pet with any medication without consulting with your veterinarian as most all of them can be toxic when administered improperly or in too high a dose. Dealing with plants is similar to dealing with chocolate, prevention is the best medicine!" (A "Chocolate Free" Valentine's Day, printed in Animal View)
Patty Jaymes, "The Animals' Plea - I Have A Right"
"I have a right not to be made to serve man's selfish need,
I'm not a toy when small, and trash when grown.
I must not be exploited and be viewed in terms of greed,
My life is here to love - and not to own.
I have a right not to be stored and sold like merchandise
In pet store, pound or kennel - anywhere.
A loving and protective lifelong home would be the price
I'd charge of those entrusted with my care.
I have so many feelings that my eyes cannot convey
Your voice is needed to describe my plight.
Please work to liberate me and to bring about the day
That men admit the fact - I HAVE A RIGHT!"
(Patty Jaymes, shot/killed by fiancee because of her animal rights militancy; he also killed her step-father, then himself!)
"When mowing the lawn, please make sure companion animals are not hiding in the grass!" (Urban Wildlife and You)
"Since the infamous TV ads started, showing a little Chihuahua proclaiming in Spanish that he wants Taco Bell's tacos, puppy mills/backyard breeders/others are flooding the market with chihuahuas making an already desperately painful situation of pet overpopulation 1000 times worse! Serious sources report 40/50% increases in abandoned Chihuahuas." (Also, they are now loudly advertising on TV "Free dog with purchase"!!! Adela P.) (From Friends of Animals Act-ionLine)
Patty Jaymes, "Born To Die"
"We hold their lives within our hands
To do with what we will,
But hands that should be used to help
Are being used to kill.
Poor babes, just born to be destroyed -
A never-ending chain,
Condemned to live in fear, and die
In all degrees of pain.
To give them help - give us your hand!
Together we shall try
To force the world to understand
They shouldn't be born, to die!"
(Patty Jaymes, shot/killed by fiancee because of her animal rights militancy; he also killed her step-father, then himself!)
"Conventional trainers and most pet owners want to dominate an animal. People take an animal and put it in a human environment. Then they treat it like an animal and expect it to act human." (WOR Show)
Suzanne Hetts, Ph.D, Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist
"Cats can be trained to stop scratching unacceptable objects if guardians substitute similar acceptable items. Provide an object with your cat's preferred texture (smooth or coarse), shape (horizontal or vertical) and height place it in your pet's favorite scratching location. For other objects: Cover with double-sided sticky tape, aluminum foil, or sheets of sandpaper and keep covered for one month after the cat has switched to the acceptable items." (Article in Pet Care)
Jonathan Leshanski, DVM
"Chocolate can be deadly to your pets! Certain chemicals present in chocolate can affect the stomach, intestines, heart and brain. This type of poisoning is seen far more often in dog, but it I've seen it in a cat whose owner insisted to share her ice-cream with the cat. Smaller animals may be at more risk due to their size versus the amount consumed. A chocolate chip or a piece of candy while cause for concern, is rarely an emergency in a medium to large dog. First signs of this poisoning are: vomiting and/or diarrhea, hyper-reactivity, increased alertness, nervousness, seizures, even collapse. A high enough dose can be fatal or cause life-long problems. Beware of caffeine ingredients in treats/foods. Watch your dogs carefully especially during holidays!" (Also harmful to dogs are grapes and raisins! Adela P.) (A "Chocolate Free" Valentine's Day, printed in Animal View)
Arthur Guiterman, "Lost Puppy"
"He was lost - not a shade of doubt of that;
For he never barked at a slinking cat,
But stood in the square where the wind blew raw
With a drooping ear and a trembling paw
And a mournful look in his pleading eye
And a plaintive sniff at the passer-by
That begged as plain as a tongue could sue,
'Oh Mister! Please may I follow you?'
Oh the saddest of sights in a world of sin
In a little lost pup with his tail tucked in!"
"If it should be that I grow frail and weak And pain should wake me from my sleep, Then you must do what must be done, For this last battle can't be won. You will be sad, I understand, Don't let your grief then stay your hand. For this day more than all the rest Your love and friendship stand the test. We've had so many happy years, What is to come will hold no fears. You'll not want me to suffer, so, When the time comes, please let me go. I know in time you too will see It is a kindness you do to me. Although my tail its last has waved, From pain and suffering I've been saved. Do not grieve that it should be you Who has to decide this thing to do. We've been so close, we two, these years, Don't let your heart hold any tears." (Quoted in CONTACT Magazine)
Patty Jaymes, "The Stray Kitten's Appeal"
"There's nothing much attractive
About me - but my size,
I may not look appealing
Unless you note my eyes.
They show my life was tragic
Right from its very start,
And beg for love's sweet shelter
With such a hopeful heart.
Please comfort and protect me
From all the pain I know,
I'm frightened by life's hardship
And death is cruel and slow.
I did not ask to be here
Yet do not want to die,
Please hear my silent longing -
I've lost the strength to cry."
(Patty Jaymes, shot/killed by fiancee because of her animal rights militancy; he also killed her step-father, then himself!)
"Birds as pets. Never, never, ever buy a caged bird. Birds are FLOCK ANIMALS, not loners, who need room to fly! Wild birds make sad, lonely and sometimes dangerous 'pets'. Captive-bred birds are more docile but breeders must constantly introduce new genes ('new blood') from the wild-caught birds, so even buying only captive-bred birds supports the wild-caught bird trade." (Save the Animals! 101 Easy Things You Can Do)
George Graham Vest, Esq.
"Gentlemen of the Jury: The best friend a man has in the world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads. The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his dog! A man's dog stands by him in prosperity and poverty, in health and sickness. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer, he will lick the wounds that come in encounter with the roughness of the word. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens. And when the last scene of all comes, and death takes the master in its embrace today. When slaves were brought over from Africa, many people believed and his body is laid away in the ground, there by the graveside will his dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad, but open in watchfulness, faithful and true even in death. Gentlemen of the Jury, the defendant killed my client's dog. Is there anything more I need to say?"
Unknown, "The Cry of the Animals"
"We are waiting here, scared and alone
Waiting here to die
These people can't find us a home
Although they try and try.
You see, others wouldn't listen
They didn't care enough
They let us breed by millions,
Till life got really rough.
A little thing called spaying,
Would have stopped our misery
We wouldn't be unwanted
Nor treated cruelly.
As is, we have no future
Only two things left for we
Tortured in a science lab,
Or death to set us free.
Please, all of you who own a pet
Help to set us free
Free from pain and hopelessness
By letting us NOT BE.
Only you can end our suffering
Only you can make the way
Please spay or neuter all your pets
Please call your Vet today!"
Kate Pullen, Dir. Animal Sheltering Issues (The Humane Society of the United States)
"Millions of dogs and cats enter shelters every year in the USA, but best estimates say only 25/35% are adopted! There are simply not enough responsible homes for all the animals! We do believe humane euthanasia of homeless companion animals is preferable to the harsh lives and slow, painful deaths these cats and dogs face when they must fend for themselves outdoors. They suffer from starvation, disease, poisoning, abuse, traffic accidents, attacks by children and severe weather. If not spayed or neutered, they bring more innocent animals into their world of suffering."
"While prolonging life is a vet's first responsibility, prolonging death, is a cruel and senseless act!"
"Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside us while we live."
Edith Lassen Johnson, "Greeting with Love"
"I wish someone would tell me what it is
That I've done wrong.
Why do I have to stay chained up and be
Left alone so long?
They seemed so glad to have me when
I came here as a pup.
There were so many things we'd do
While I was growing up.
The Master said he'd train me as a
Companion and a friend.
The Mistress said she'd never fear
To be left alone again.
The children said they'd feed me and
Brush me every day.
They'd play with me and walk me
If I would only stay.
But now the Master 'hasn't Time'
The Mistress says I shed
She doesn't want me in the house
Not even to be fed.
The Children never walk me.
They always say, 'Not now'
I wish that I could please them.
Won't someone tell me how?
All I had, you see, was love.
I wish they would explain
Why they said they wanted mine,
And then left it on a chain???"
(From a "Lonely Dog")
Marion Cecelia Crowe, Animal Helpers, England, "Mercy Death"
"A pretty kitten once... so soft and clean...
Yet you become a stray, sad eyed and thin;
Homeless, unwanted, scourged from place to place,
Tormenting fleas and sores upon your skin.
So, gently 'put to sleep' by kindly hands,
Your body placed in earth beneath a tree
Is safe from kicks and stones, or agony
In vivisection's hell of cruelty.
You will not wander, will not slowly starve
Or die in anguish, trapped in wire or steel.
And though about the place where now you sleep
The bitter winds may blow, you will not feel."
"The cat uses all the vowels and 11 consonants when s/he 'talks'. A cat has 18 to 28 bones in h/his tail, so don't let anyone tell you it doesn't HURT to step on it!"
"Lenin was a cat lover! On page 172 of 'Lenin' by Robert Warth (Russian History Professor at the U. of Kentucky), it says: 'Lenin's fondness for cats provides a fleeting glimpse into another face to his personality. Subtle, dignified, and haughtily independent, the feline tends to be admired by intellectuals and inner-directed types, and disliked by those with tender egos and other manifestations of psychological immaturity... Lenin's preference for cats is perhaps unique among the political luminaries of the modern world.'"
Madame de Staeal (1766-1817)
"The more I see of men, the more I like dogs." (Memoirs)
"If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went."
Gala Svilan, Croatian celebrity
"I never part with my dog, and a thought that I would abandon her and go on holidays without her is just unacceptable. I still did not find an ON/OFF button on my Piki, but human hearts obviously have one."
Franka Batelic, Croatian singer
"I can't believe that anyone could abandon such wonderful animals, someone who is completely depending on you. I think that the laws against abandoning animals should be more severe. Abandoning an animal is an extremely immoral and cowardly act! Animals are not things, commodities, or consumerist products to be used for a while as it pleases us and then be thrown away irresponsibly. They are living beings who deserve our love and respect, and they have a right to be taken care of for their entire lives."
Ivana Kindl, Croatian singer
"Prevention is always better than cure and, when you think of all those innocent lives at stake, it is clear that spaying/neutering animals shows responsibility, since thus we can save them from dying. I think that we should act more responsibly towards our companion animals and we also shouldn’t forget all those other cats and dogs that are awaiting our help."
"People think they have a sense of responsibility, but they don't realize what a big responsibility having a pet is. They undertake it and then they can't deal and then the animals end up suffering."
Marko Tolja, Croatian singer
"I gladly agreed to participate in the Animal Friends campaign because I severely disapprove of abandoning animals. I think it is better people do not get a dog if there is even the slightest thought that some day he could be redundant. I hope that madatory microchipping will help to punish all those who take caring for an animal lightly."
Dalibor Petko, Croatian radio show host
"To everyone who wants a dog I recommend to visit a shelter for abandoned animals. Dogs from shelters are so affectionate and grateful, especially dogs that have spent a long time there. If you want a dog and have the appropriate circumstances to give him a home, come to the shelter. You will brighten life to one creature and in addition you will get a life-long friend."
Luis Ibanez, player of a Croatian soccer team Dinamo Zagreb
"I love animals and I really cannot understand how one can leave one's pet in the street."
Robert Louis Stevenson, Familiar Studies of Men and Books
"You think these dogs will not be in Heaven? I tell you they will be there long before any of us."
Mario Valentic, Croatian actor and personal trainer
"It is better not to adopt an animal if you are not ready to take on the lifelong responsibility of having her. I have trouble understanding how people kick animals to the streets because of their comfort. Animals are sensitive creatures who need a lot of attention and time."
"It's really important that people adopt. I really encourage going out to an animal shelter or a place where you can get a dog who has been abandoned or doesn't have a home."
"If you guys are interested in getting any kind of animal, definitely go and adopt... A lot of people don't even think about it, you just walk by a store and you see all these cute little puppies... not thinking about all the animals that are in tiny little cages by themselves or shoved in with a whole bunch of dogs in one cage."
"First, I disagree with two of those words - 'to own' and 'pet.' You can't own another creature… They're not pets. 'Pets' has a connotation that we're a superior species and they are an inferior species. We're here to take care of them because they can't make it on their own. They are companion animals, hopefully, if they choose to be, and we certainly do not own them."
Croatian band Picksiebner
"Unchain the dogs, no one deserves such a life."
"I wish we could have that many mentions for, you know, adoption... If you love Grumpy Cat, and you can't get a munchkin Siamese with blue eyes, go get another cat... They're all adorable and at times grumpy. Go get your own grumpy cat."
Igor Mesin, Croatian TV host
"There is no justification for abandoning animals. One can always organize some sort of pet sitting. Besides, the sea is good for the dogs."
Rene Bitorajac, Croatian actor
"Anyone who is able to abandon an animal cannot be good to people either."
"Like me, countless Canadians share their homes and lives with pets they consider to be part of the family. We know that they have individual personalities and quirks and that they feel both physical and mental pain. Our pets share these traits with other animals; including those we don’t share our lives with, such as farm animals."
"There are two means of refuge from the miseries of life: music and cats."
Billy Corgan, The Smashing Pumpkins
"In my home, the animals run the show. At best, we're equals. But that's the way it should be. They have every right to live and be happy as much as I do."
Darijo Brzoja, a young Croatian meteorologist and popular presenter of weather forecast about "Summer Goes, Friends Stay" campaign
"I believe that the highest form of humanity is to give a voice to those who don't have one. This is why taking part in this Animal Friends' campaign is an honor for me, but also a natural continuation of my life philosophy: love and compassion towards people, animals and our whole little blue planet."
