01/24/02 Hunting on Medvednica
Reaction of Animal Friends and an announcement of protest against hunting in Natural Park Medvednica
According to a new regulation on internal order in Natural Park Medvednica dating from January 19, 2002, hunting on 5,543 hectares of the park, within the borders of Krapina-Zagorje county, is now allowed.
We do not want hunting on Medvednica and we believe that climbers, hikers and most of the citizens of Zagreb don't want it either.
The hunting on Medvednica has been banned for the last 8 years and it was planned to stay that way.
Medvednica is a natural park and it should become important tourist area and not a hunting range.
We wonder why anyone would allow hunting on Medvednica even if there is no reason for it, and public opinion is against it?
Who has any interest in allowing hunting against the will of people and common sense?
Should we allow that hunting lobby in the Government makes decisions on hunting in the natural park?
We ask for the re-examination of the decision and for the prevention of turning Medvednica into a hunting range.
We ask for the banning of hunting in Natural Park Medvednica.
The protest of Animal Friends is going to take place on Thursday, January 24, 2002, at 12 noon in front of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, Ulica Republike Austrije 20.
How does the Ministry of environmental protection make decisions by turning a natural park into a hunting range?
Why haven't they considered the wishes of citizens and thought about Medvednica as a tourist region?
And why have Krapina-Zagorje county authorities turned a deaf ear to a request of the natural park's manager to let Medvednica be because it really isn't necessary that natural park becomes a hunting range?
As if we don't read enough in newspapers about dogs and people being shot by hunting rifles - do we need such news from Medvednica as well?
Those are all questions that need to be answered.
We want to limit hunters in their bloody sport, at least on Medvednica.
