After several illegal approvals of horse log-pulling competitions this year, the veterinary inspection refused last month to grant approval for a competition near Požega. However, Animal Friends Croatia reports that they have once again had to write to the State Inspectorate and authorities in the city of Popovača regarding the announcement of a horse log-pulling competition scheduled for next weekend. In their complaint to the DIRH (State Inspectorate of the Republic of Croatia), they requested that the veterinary inspection not issue a permit for the event and that the market inspection prevent the illegal acquisition of profit at the expense of animals, considering the announced prize fund of 5,000 euros. In a letter to the mayor of Popovača, Josip Mišković, and his associates, they urged them not to allow the event to take place and appealed to them not to spend taxpayers' money as they did last year when the Popovača city administration allocated funds from the city budget to support the first horse log-pulling competition.
