On World Food Day and International Day for the Eradication of Poverty Animal Friends warns: More Meat, the Hungrier the World!

- Trg bana Jelacica: meat performance, providing nutritionally rich meal to poor citizens

According to UN figures, one man out of every seven in the world does not know whether he will have enough food to survive the day. In the past year, due to the increase of food prices, about 70 million people have been pushed into extreme poverty.

Animal Friends will mark World Food Day (Oct 16) with a significant demonstration on Zagreb's Trg bana Jelacica on Oct 16, 2012 at 12 noon. A large table will be set with empty plates, one of which will have a piece of meat on it, and activists will warn citizens about the connection between the unnecessary production of meat, milk, and eggs and poverty and world hunger.

On the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (Oct 17), Oct 17, 2012 at 12 noon, Animal Friends' activitsts will also be on Trg bana Jelacica giving out a delicious nutritionally-rich stew made of ecologically-farmed vegetables, legumes, and grains to homeless and low-income citizens. By doing this, they want to stress that healthy food, grown without the use of pesticides and genetic manipulations, could be available to everyone if agricultural land was used for growing vegetables instead of for breeding animals.

Meat is a very wasteful way of producing food and, on average, 10 kg of vegetables are used to produce 1 kg of meat. Meat production wastes about 5 to 10 times more water than the production of plant-based foods does, and now a third of the world's arable land is used to grow crops to feed livestock. On the one hand, residents of developed countries overeat foods from animal origins and suffer from obesity and heart disease but on the other hand, over 900 million people in the world are starving, and 2 billion are malnourished because the grains that could feed people are used to feed livestock. Starvation occurs because the rich people in the West use most of the world's cereal crops to feed their animals on farms. The West uses its power by insisting that poorer countries grow food for the animals of the West instead of producing food for their own people. If we do not change our diet we will not survive, because the Earth does not have enough resources for our greed!

Scientists at the Stockholm International Water Institute warned that there will be lack of water for food production by 2050, when the Earth is expected to have 9 billion people. The current diet, based on the cultivation of crops to fatten animals for slaughter, is unsustainable, leads to catastrophic food shortages, and increases the number of hungry and poor people in the world. Raising animals for food is a terrible waste of the world's resources of land and water.

If we kept our grain stock and gave them to the poor and malnourished instead of breeding animals, we could easily feed almost all chronically malnourished people in the world. Meat is the most uneconomical and inefficient food we eat: the price of one kilogram of meat protein is twenty times greater than the cost of the same amount of plant protein, which is the reason why countries subsidize industries that process meat, milk and eggs.

The world hunger problem is artificial. At present, more than enough food is produced to feed every person on our planet, yet many people are starving and dying of starvation because more than 60 billion animals are breed every year for human consumption which uses up enormous amounts of natural resources and contributes to environmental pollution and global warming. Only if we change our decisions will there be more food and people it will be healthier. Animal Friends invites citizens to choose exclusively plant-based foods so that we can all eat healthy, without destroying nature, our health and animals, and also help reduce world hunger and stop the destruction of the planet.
