This year's first "Adoption is Cool" event has been organised by the Zagreb City Shelter for Abandoned Animals in Dumovec and the City of Zagreb, in collaboration with Animal Friends Croatia. The event will take place on Saturday, April 1, 2017, from 9 A.M. to 3 P.M. in Ban Jelacic Square in Zagreb.

Earlier this month, the Shelter for Abandoned Animals in Dumovec and Animal Friends launched a major campaign for the protection of wild animals in cities. Journalist and writer Pero Kvesic was featured as the face of the campaign, appearing on billboards next to a fox. On Saturday, Animal Friends activists will set up an information stand and hand out educational pamphlets on living in harmony with wildlife. Visitors will be able to buy promotional T-shirts and bags.

The goal of this event is to raise awareness of the teeming wildlife in urban areas. In the spring, wild animals might give birth to their young in cities. Your balcony, garden, or yard, the neighborhood playground... every green area is a perfect potential home for a wild animal. Birds like to build their nests on balconies, while hedgehogs might make their burrows under a hedge. Foxes might roam the streets looking for food and a nice place to stay.

All of us who live in cities should strive to live in harmony with these animals because we are the ones who caused the disappearance of their natural habitats by erecting buildings, shopping malls, and cutting down trees.
