Plant-based burger day symbolically indicates the necessity of changing food production and habits

- A vegan burger uses 99 percent less water and has 90 percent less impact on climate change

Symbolically, on the day when the world celebrates World Environment Day, i.e. June 5, Plant Burger Day began to be celebrated. How much environmental protection is connected with the consumption of plant-based food is proven by the fact that 99 percent less water is used to create a plant-based burger, it occupies 93 percent less Earth's surface, emits 90 percent less harmful gases and consumes even 46 percent less energy compared to a beef burger.

Animal Friends Croatia association invites everyone to celebrate World Burger Day by informing about the great benefits of plant-based meat for the environment, health and animals, and to try and find their favorite plant-based burger. Today, plant-based burgers can be bought as ready-made frozen or fresh products in stores and tried in restaurants and fast food chains or made at home. On this occasion, animal friends bring a simple recipe for a great Mediterranean burger.

"There are vegan burgers based on protein from peas, soy, beans, broad beans, chickpeas and other plant foods. Some are extremely similar in smell, taste and texture to animal meat, and even while baking they 'bleed' with the help of beetroot juice. There are various types, and they can be served with vegetable cheese. The fact that they taste incredibly similar to animal meat helps everyone to make a partial or complete transition to a plant-based diet as easily as possible," notes Animal Friends Croatia.

Due to their composition, plant-based burgers are in many ways healthier than those made from animal meat - they contain high-quality proteins, are full of minerals and vitamins, and do not contain saturated fatty acids, cholesterol, genetically modified ingredients and nitrates, and are lower in calories.

Animal Friends Croatia invites everyone to mark the Day of plant-based burgers by signing the European Citizens' initiative, which aims to invest in the development of plant-based and cultured meat. The petition can be signed at https://endtheslaughterage.eu/hr/.

"Plant meat is the medicine for our survival on this planet; it is food that can ensure the reduction of hunger in the world, the preservation of the environment and the protection of animals. We invite everyone to actively participate in the celebration of this day while exploring the offer and plant-based burgers", they conclude.

Ingredients:

1 large zucchini, 4 large potatoes, 1 onion or the white part of leek, 2 cloves of garlic, 2 carrots, 1 lemon peel, 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, 5 tablespoons of olive oil, 4 tablespoons of flour as desired (chickpea and wheat flour give the best results), 1/2 baking powder, 1 tablespoon of oregano, 2 tablespoons of basil, 2 tablespoons of rosemary, 2 tablespoons of chopped sage or thyme, salt, pepper, 100 g of tofu or boiled chickpeas.

Preparation:

1. Peel and clean the vegetables, then grate carrots, potatoes and zucchini into larger pieces. Grate garlic, leek or onion into smaller pieces. If using tofu, just crumble it with your hands, and if using chickpeas, mash it with a fork.

2. Transfer all ingredients to a large container and add spices, flour, oil and lemon juice and mix well. Place baking paper on a larger, flat tray and shape the meatballs with your hands or a mold.

3. Before baking, additionally coat with olive oil and lemon juice. Bake in the oven for 35-40 minutes at 200 °C.
