Educational visit of children to the Shelter for Abandoned Animals of the City of Zagreb in Dumovec

Animal Friends has organized, in cooperation with the Municipal Department of Agriculture and Forestry, Municipal Department of Health, Work, and Social Welfare, Municipal Department of Education, Culture, and Sports, and with Social Pedagogy Service "Vladimir Nazor," an educational visit of primary-school children to the Shelter for Abandoned Animals of the City of Zagreb in Dumovec.

The aim of this visit is to educate children on the problem of abandoning animals and their accommodation in animal shelters, as well as to motivate citizens to adopt animals from these shelters.

Children participating in the program titled "Learning About Equality," which has been organized by the Municipal Department of Health, Work, Social Welfare, and Veterans of War and by Social Pedagogy Service "Vladimir Nazor" in Grad mladih (a district of Zagreb), are planning to visit the Shelter for Abandoned Animals of the City of Zagreb in Dumovec. Animal Friends has organized the visit and the representatives of Municipal Department of Agriculture and Forestry will receive the children at the Shelter. The Municipal Department of Education, Culture, and Sport has provided transportation by buses.

Visit to the Shelter is planned for Saturday, December 30, 2006. The children will start from Grad mladih at 10:00 A.M. The arrival is planned for 10:30 A.M., when the tour around the Shelter will begin.

Children from Grad Mladih will be joined by a dozen children from the school group Animal Friends, active at the Primary School "King Tomislav," who will guide the tour around the Shelter. This group was founded more than a year ago in cooperation with Animal Friends Croatia, with an aim to educate children on animal welfare and animal rights. The group is currently led by teacher Mrs. Karmela Farkas and numbers around 100 students. In order to become guides at the Shelter tour, the children participated in a series of lectures, workshops, and a visit to the Shelter, after which ten of them were selected for the task.

Children from Animal Friends group will start at 9:00 A.M. from their school at Nova cesta (Trakoscanska ulica) and join the children from Grad mladih at 10:00 A.M., after which they will start for the shelter and begin their tour at 10:30 A.M.

The visit is conceived as the first in a series of similar events, with the aim of educating children on the problem of abandoned animals and improving mutual education and activism related to animal welfare and animal rights among children. In its conception, the visit fits well into the programme of "Learning About Equality."

Children should learn from the earliest age about the problem of abandoned animals and cruelty to animals in general, while older children can become actively engaged and contribute to a better cohabitation of humans and animals in the future.
