10/29/05 Vegetarianism Against Bird Flu
Animal Friends points a finger at the real causes of bird flu and offers a natural solution
In Croatia, after Asia and other countries where the bird flu virus was detected, the brutal precautionary mass-slay of hens and other poultry is taking place in attempt to stop the virus from spreading. Although avian flu exists in nature, due to intensive factory farming it received an opportunity to kill millions of animals and also mutates and starts to spread among the human population.
Therefore to draw attention to all the consequences of breeding and eating animals, the suffering of animals, devastation of resources and environment, a danger to human health and the diseases outbreak including, Animal Friends offers a simple and healthy solution both for human and animal wellbeing.
On Saturday, October 29, 2005, Animal Friends invites everyone to visit their informative stall in Varsavska Street (opposite to Europa movie theater) at 12:00 noon for a vegan tasting. Together with informative materials, Animal Friends' activists will hand out 500 bottles of mayonnaise without eggs and 1,000 cartons of soy milk in order to remind fellow townsmen that they can base their everyday diet on grains, vegetables and fruit as well as prepare healthy and tasty food without using animal ingredients.
Bird flue as a result of intensive breeding of animals
Wild, migratory birds are accused of being carriers of the disease, yet history tells us - as with bovine TB, foot and mouth, BSE, E. coli, salmonella, campylobacter and pig wasting disease etc that factory farming is the root of the problem. Farmed animals are treated as expendable units of production by an industry whose sole focus is maximum production for minimum expense. The terrible conditions, combined with farmed animals living in close proximity to humans as in Asia - has caused this recent outbreak.
If we continue to treat animals this way and exploit them past their physiological limits to cope, then we will be forced to live with the consequences. Chickens are gentle, easily frightened birds, and what is done to them for a taste of their flesh is coming back to bite us all. Chicken flesh addiction is so strong that despite all the threats of a global pandemic and all E. coli, salmonella, and other "ordinary" outbreaks that arise from the filth in which the birds are kept, our species would prefer to spend millions on a potential vaccine than just stop torturing birds for the table.
So far, more than 150 million birds have been slaughtered with a total disregard for their suffering. Country to country, chicks and adult birds are burned alive in masses or have their necks broken. If you are concerned about the implications to human health, or are upset by the death scenes on TV, then you must take responsibility for your actions. Stop eating animals and be part of the solution rather than the problem.
