Animal Friends announces their performance in Rijeka within the framework of the national campaign "For Croatia without Fur"

The performance against killing of animals for fur will take place on March 2, 2007 at 12:00 noon in the shopping mile "Korzo," at the Republic of Croatia Square. Activists from Animal Friends will walk down the Korzo, dragging "blood-soaked" fur coats on chains and showing video images of animals on fur farms, drawing attention to the cruelty of fur industry by lowed messages.

The performance will take place in the framework of the national campaign entitled "For Croatia without Fur," with the aim of appealing to the Croatian public to condemn breeding animals for fur, as well as to speak out against promoting, selling, and wearing clothes made of animal fur. The final goal is to create an ethically aware Croatia, where fur will be abolished.

The legal prohibition of breeding animals for fur, which has been supported by as many as 73.7% of the Croatian citizens and was implemented by the new Animal Protection Act early this year, although with a transition period of ten years. This shows that most citizens are well aware that hunting down or breeding animals for fur, as well as the ways they are put to death – by electrocution, gassing, breaking their necks, or by poison and insecticide being injected in their hearts... – are a vital element of fur clothing and that all killing of animals for the sake of fashion and glamour should be condemned.

At the same day and place, there will be an info-stand, where passersby in Rijeka will have the opportunity to sign the current petitions and receive info-materials and direct information.

Eternal Treblinka book promotion!

At 6:00 P.M., within the framework of the Bookfair of Independent Publishers at Strossmayerova Street 1, Animal Friends will invite to a reading from the intriguing book by Charles Patterson, Eternal Treblinka: Our Treatment of Animals and the Holocaust.

The author of this controversial book on some 300 pages has presented abundant evidence and historical facts showing that crime against humanity has its roots in crimes against animals, claiming that it is impossible to view the two things separately and to ignore the parallels between industrialized American slaughterhouses and Hitler's concentration camps.

The presentation will include a video projection entitled "Meet Your Meat," narrated by Alec Baldwin, and a discussion on animal welfare and animal rights, as well as on vegetarianism as lifestyle.

A lecture How to be an Animal Friend?

At 8:00 P.M. at Lamparna in Labin, Animal Friends will give a lecture on How to be an Animal Friend? presenting the new Animal Protection Act, as well as the past, present, and future campaigns by Animal Friends. The visitors will also have a chance to try some vegan specialties, by which we hope to make the public acquainted with this ethical, ecological, and healthy style of nutrition.
