Recent studies published in the scientific journal „BMJ Nutrition Prevention & Health” shows that individuals who follow a plant-based diet are 73% less likely to develop moderate to severe symptoms of Covid-19 disease. The study, which included 2884 health professionals from France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States, aimed to investigate the link between diet and the severity of coronavirus symptoms.
Among the 568 positive cases, those who were on a plant-based diet did better, with as much as
73% less chance of developing moderate to severe symptoms. Unlike them, people who were on a diet rich in animal protein were almost 4 times more likely to experience moderate or severe symptoms of Covid-19. People on a plant-based diet consume more fruits and vegetables, more plant proteins such as legumes and nuts.
The authors of this research explained that these types of groceries supply the body with important vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, which boost our immune system and help prevent respiratory infections. This should come as no surprise because renowned nutritionist and scientist Dr. Neal Barnard notes that nutritionists in the 1950s found that plant food contained plenty of healthy proteins that help our immune systems make antibodies, regulate blood sugar and metabolize fat. They are also important for creating energy, building the organism and regenerating tissue.
„The risk of coronavirus and other diseases is reduced because plant food is high in antioxidants and phytochemicals that protect us from various diseases, while meat, eggs and milk increase muscle growth, which makes it difficult for the white blood cells to function normally and protect us from harmful microorganisms. Everyday consumption of plant-based groceries can help us build a strong immune system that can fight viral and bacterial infections more easily, and it can also help us create better resistance to diseases,” said Animal Friends Croatia.
„Our active community, which has been promoting the vegan diet in Croatia for 20 years as the most powerful source of preventive medicine on the planet, states that this pandemic of coronavirus should encourage us even more to become vegans and always consume plant-based products: „By doing so, we create a strong immunity that cannot succumb so easily to the disease, and at the same time we can prevent new, stronger forms of viruses that arise from raising animals for food. We invite all of you to include as many as possible unprocessed plant-based food into your diet!”
They add that if we have the flu, cold, or any similar disease, various vegan and plant-based meals are a great source of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other nutrients that will help us heal and recover faster. We can protect ourselves from new variants of coronavirus, in addition to applying all other epidemiological measures and including a diverse vegan diet.
