Animal Friends again joins the action “Adoption is Cool,” but with a question: Who Thinks Adopting is Not Cool?

- Adopting of abandoned animals in view of the ban on adoption, campaign against keeping dogs on chain

Animal Friends has joined the action "Adopting is Cool," organized by the Shelter for Abandoned Animals of the City of Zagreb at Dumovec and the City Office for Agriculture and Forestry. The action will take place on Saturday, November 17, 2012, from 10:00 A.M. until 3:00 P.M. at Trg bana Jelacica in Zagreb.

Everybody is invited to join the action which will include collecting old blankets and sheets that will help the dogs at the Shelter survive the winter. Visitors will also be informed about how to help the abandoned animals through various forms of volunteering, such as dog-walking.

From 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 noon a member from the band Picksiebner will introduce their new campaign called "Life on a Chain Isn't Life." The visitors will have the opportunity to sign the petition against keeping dogs on a chain and obtain information about how they can help abandoned animals.

Even though the municipal shelter at Dumovec organizes the action "Adoption is Cool" several times a year with the aim of raising public awareness on the importance of adopting abandoned animals and taking responsibility for the animals, it seems that the Veterinary Inspection thinks that adoption is not cool.

For more than a month, the City Shelter for Abandoned Animals at Dumovec has been forced to stop the adoption of all newly arrived animals, since according to a decision issued by the Veterinary Inspection only the dogs that have spent at least six months at the shelter for observation, or have tested negative when for rabies can be adopted. The number of adoptions has fallen drastically and the situation is becoming worse every day. This decision made by the Veterinary Inspection is unique to Croatia and Europe, and many people are wondering why such decisions are made and what the agenda behind them is.

If this or some similar regulation is introduced into the new Regulations on the conditions that must be met by animal shelters in Croatia, as it has been announced, we are threatened with the collapse of the entire adoption system and the closure of all shelters, and this is no exaggeration. Aside from the fact that animals are kept without reason at the shelter, such a regulation creates a heavy financial burden for the local communities and the cities, many of which still have not built shelters as prescribed by the law. This increases the risk of spreading rabies and creates many other problems, including the fact that a larger number of dogs remain on the street.

The lack of reaction by the Ministry in charge means either that it is unaware of the problem or that it is ignoring it on purpose, although the situation can easily deteriorate (what is meant by the word deteriorate here? It's meaning doesn't seem to match up with what this sentence is trying to say), with great financial losses and irreparable consequences. When packs of stray dogs begin roaming around our cities, it will be too late.

Animal Friends invites everybody to take responsibility for animals and to adopt an abandoned animal instead of buying it, provided that you have adequate conditions to keep it, as this way you can save a life.
