A team of U.S. Marines from Camp Lejeune in North Carolina recently conducted a monthlong training session in Chad, where they taught 101 newly recruited park rangers important tactics to help in the fight against poachers and wildlife traffickers. "We laid down a basic infantry skill set," said Lt. John Porter, who led the 15 Marines from Special-Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force Africa. Lessons included weapons handling and safety; raid tactics; field medicine; and patrolling and navigation techniques that could be used to counter smuggling, improve border security, and ensure the rangers' safety. The lessons, he said, could help save their lives. "These poachers are dangerous people."

05/26/2014 SUPREME COURT OF INDIA BANS DOGFIGHTING AND COCKFIGHTING

The Supreme Court of India recently banned the use of bulls in any type of performance, including races, bullfights and jallikattu, an annual festival in which thousands of men chase the bulls to grab prizes tied to their horns. Any violation of this ban is officially punishable under the Prevention of Cruelty to the Animals Act. Now, in another pro-animal move by the high court, you can add cockfighting, dogfighting and other such cruelties to that list of banned activities. Even though it is illegal under The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, cockfighting still takes place in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Punjab and Tamil Nadu, and dogfighting still occurs in Haryana and Punjab. Cockfighting and dogfighting are both cruel acts that use animals for human entertainment without regard for their safety. At the end of each fight, one or more animals are usually seriously injured or dead.

05/24/2014 IFAW IS HELPING ANIMALS IN BOSNIA

In three days, Bosnia got as much rain as it usually gets in three months - and it was deadly for people and animals. Homes, schools, hospitals - 100,000 buildings in all - were destroyed or made unusable by the flooding. One of the buildings threatened is an animal shelter in Orasje, a town in northern Bosnia. A staff member worried that she might have to release 170 dogs to keep them from drowning if the shelter was flooded. So many other animals - dogs, cats, livestock and wildlife - are at risk. At the request of the United Nations, IFAW's disaster response team is on the way to help. IFAW will work with its local partners to provide field assessments and to help rescue and care for dogs and other animals affected by the historic floods.

05/21/2014 JAPAN WHALING TOWN SUED BY DOLPHIN ACTIVISTS

Animal rights activists said Thursday, May 15, they had sued a major Japanese whaling town internationally condemned for its dolphin hunts for banning "foreign-looking" visitors from its whale museum. Sarah Lucas, head of "Australia for Dolphins," filed a lawsuit on Tuesday, May 13, at the regional court of Wakayama, western Japan, where the town of Taiji is located, demanding an end to "discrimination based on race" and about 7 million yen ($69,000) in damages, she told a news conference. The activist said she visited the museum in February to check on the condition of an extremely rare albino dolphin calf, named Angel by her group, which was caught in January and has been kept in a "cramped, abusive show tank." But a ticket officer turned her away with a sign in English that read: "Please note that anti-whalers are not allowed to enter the museum." Lucas added she knew other foreigners who had been given the same treatment.

To fight circumvention, the Commission proposal includes a full ban of driftnets fishing in the EU as well as the prohibition of keeping driftnets on board of fishing vessels. Furthermore, to avoid ambiguity, the proposal refines the current definition of a driftnet.

05/06/2014 CANCEROUS COWS PROCESSED AT MEAT PLANT

Federal investigators say a California meat plant processed diseased cows for use in U.S. foods. It's the same company that was forced to recall 8.7 million pounds of meat back in March. CNN has learned what investigators believe happened inside the Rancho Feeding Corporation - the plant behind one of the biggest meat recalls in years. It involves cancerous cows, meat not fit for human consumption, and an illicit romance. Federal officials familiar with the investigation believe Rancho processed cancerous cows when government inspectors weren't there. And after they were slaughtered they hid the warning signs of the cancer by trimming off diseased parts, using a fake stamp of approval, or even replacing the heads of sick cows with healthy ones.

The singer said, "Love, acceptance, friends, two kids that I love and that I have to take care of myself for them." He continued, "I love what I do. I think that's important. I’m vegetarian. 05/02/2014 BRYAN ADAMS IS "AGAINST THE DELIBERATE KILLING OF ALL ANIMALS"

Canadian born rock star Bryan Adams scheduled performance of his first "Mile One" show in St. John’s, Newfoundland is being met with a lot of controversy. Some residents of St. John's feel the vegan and PETA supporter musician is being hypocritical by touring the province, especially when it coincides with their annual seal hunt, but he said that he simply wants to perform for his fans and nothing else. Although Adams claims he intends to keep his views on the seal hunt separate from his tour in Newfoundland, the artist wanted to make it perfectly clear that he stands in complete opposition of the seal hunt, as well as the killing of all other animals. "However, for the record, I’m a veggie and against the deliberate killing of ALL animals, not just seals, so for those people that want to protest about my coming to play a gig, make sure to get all the chicken farmers, cow farmers and fishermen to march in unity at my presence," protested Adams. Adams has been a staunch vegetarian since 1989 (now vegan), and said that he lives by the motto, "[i]f you love animals, don’t eat them."
