04/30/2013 EU UPHOLDS BAN ON SEAL PRODUCTS

Canada's embattled sealing industry was dealt another blow Thursday when a European Union court upheld the EU's three-year-old ban on seal products. The General Court of the European Union issued a statement saying it rejected a challenge from a group that includes the Canadian Fur Institute, the seal processing industry and one of Canada's largest Inuit groups. The Luxembourg-based court said the existing ban is valid because it fairly harmonizes the EU market while protecting the economic and social interests of Inuit communities.

04/30/2013 HAND-REARED RHINO GIVES BIRTH IN THE WILD

A rhino, hand-reared by humans and rehabilitated in India's Manas National Park as part of the species reintroduction program, has given birth in the wild, for the first time in India. The new mother, Ganga , was rescued as a three-month-old calf during the annual floods in Kaziranga National Park in July 2004, by the Assam Forest Department. She was hand-raised by veterinarians and animal keepers at the IFAW-WTI-run Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) near Kaziranga. Dharati's birth marks a milestone in the Rhino Rehabilitation Project, a joint venture of the Assam Forest Department and IFAW-WTI.

04/29/2013 HARVARD CLOSES MAJOR PRIMATE RESEARCH CENTER

In a surprise move, Harvard Medical School announced that it would be closing a controversial primate research center where four monkeys died between 2010 and 2012 because of problems with animal care. The New England Primate Research Center (NEPRC) in Southborough is set to be largely shut down by 2015, a decision that Harvard officials told the Boston Globe was mostly due to a difficult economic climate for biomedical research as the government cuts back sharply on spending. But it's difficult to imagine that the animal welfare problems at the center - which was cited for violations by the U.S. Department of Agriculture - didn't factor into the decision to shutter the labs.

04/29/2013 NORWAY SAYS NO TO PET REPTILE AND AMPHIBIAN TRADE

Wildlife protection organizations across Europe are applauding a decision by the Norwegian government to retain a 37-year old ban on reptile and amphibian keeping and trading, and reject a proposal from wildlife dealers and exotic animal keepers to open trade in a limited number of species. European NGOs and wildlife professionals have supported the Norwegian Animal Protection Alliance in their campaign, over several years, to keep the ban.

04/26/2013 IS LEONARDO DICAPRIO A VEGETARIAN?

Is longtime animal activist Leonardo DiCaprio a vegetarian? Gwyneth Paltrow seems to think so and revealed in a recent article that "The Great Gatsby" actor helped her embrace a somewhat meat-free lifestyle. Paltrow told The Guardian, "I hung out with Leonardo DiCaprio when I moved to New York. He was vegetarian and he'd talk about how dirty meat is and how bad factory farming is. I haven't eaten red meat in 20 years and although Leo's not totally responsible he definitely planted a seed. When I turned seriously macrobiotic, it coincided with my father having been diagnosed with cancer [in 1999]. I felt I could heal him by proxy." From Paltrows remarks, it seems DiCaprio was – possibly still is – vegetarian. DiCaprio hasn't confirmed or denied Paltrow's statement.

04/26/2013 CHINESE TURN VEGETARIAN AFTER BIRD FLU SCARE

Two more cases of deadly bird flu were reported in China on April 22, taking the total number of cases to 104 while the H7N9 virus scare pushed meat-loving Chinese to turn vegetarian. The new cases of H7N9 bird flu were confirmed in east China's Zhejiang province, bringing the province's total number of infections to 40, local officials said. Up to this date China has reported 104 bird flu cases. Twenty of them died so far. The ministry has order the province to strengthen monitoring of the H7N9 virus and take proper disease prevention and control measures. However, the new virus is turning to be a boon to vegetable vendors as wary Chinese turned vegetarian, state- run Xinhua news agency reported. "Cabbage that was once left to rot has become a hit," vegetable dealer Xu Jialiang in central China's Hubei province said.

04/25/2013 PETA BUYS SHARES IN SEAWORLD, AIMS TO FREE ORCAS

As if SeaWorld's reputation with animal advocates wasn't already sunk, the organization had the gall to feature live penguins traipsing through the center of the New York Stock Exchange Friday morning. The company was in town to ring the opening bell as part of celebrations surrounding its IPO and new place under SEAS on the NYSE. According to Yahoo Finance, the trading raised $702 million in one of the largest IPOs of the year. But if one new shareholder has its way, that penguin stunt – as well as many of the other business-as-usual animal policies that have drawn ire – will soon come to an end. PETA has announced that it has purchased enough common stock to give the group the right to attend annual shareholder meetings, as well as submit shareholder resolutions. PETA also laid out plans – not only for those animals in captivity – but also for the company's new shareholders.

04/25/2013 THE NORWEGIAN LABOUR PARTY ADDS FUR BAN TO THE PARTY MANIFESTO

The Labour Party Congress has on April 21 voted to add a ban on fur farming to the party manifesto. This addition to the manifesto follows the resolution to put an end to fur farming, as decided at the 2011 Party Congress. While this stance is not new for the party, the inclusion of a fur ban into the manifesto commits the party to this work for the next four years. This inclusion in the manifesto is an important signal in Norwegian politics, in particular to the right-wing partys like the Conservative Party. The Norwegian Animal Protection Alliance has been working towards this point for the past 10 years. The Norwegian Labour Party are currently in Goverment, together with the Socialist Left Party and the Centre Party.

04/24/2013 JUDE LAW SPEAKS OUT AGAINST CANADIAN SEAL HUNT

Days after the annual slaughter has begun, Jude Law, in partnership with PETA, has joined the ranks of the many celebrities who have spoken out against it. He wrote in a letter to the WTO, who will be having a final hearing on the Canadian government's challenge on the EU's ban on seal products, "In light of next week's seal-products dispute hearing, I'm writing to urge the panel to uphold this ban, which is in line with the wishes of compassionate people all around the world, including the majority of European citizens. The US, Taiwan, Mexico and even Russia (which had been importing 95 per cent of Canadian seal pelts) have also banned seal-fur imports. Even local sentiment is turning and a lack of markets has led Canadian officials to seriously examine whether the slaughter should end.??" Law continues, "The purpose of the WTO is to support efficient markets, not government decisions to prop up dying industries like the seal slaughter. For the second year, Newfoundland will give a $3.6 million loan to a seal processing plant to boost the industry, even though reports show that hundreds of thousands of seal skins are already in storage."

04/24/2013 JAY KITCHEN: NYC TO SCORE ANOTHER GOURMET VEGAN RESTAURANT

Gotham's vegan scene is getting a new, deliciously gourmet addition – and the guy opening it isn't even legal to drink yet. Meet Jay Astafa – 20-year-old graduate of the National Gourmet Institute and soon-to-be-owner of Jay Kitchen somewhere in NYC. But first, he's giving a preview of his amazing creations with a pop-up concept over two days at the Old Bowery Station. "Myself and pastry chef Dani McGrath will be featuring an 8 course menu," Astafa wrote on Facebook. "Ever since I became vegan, I always had a dream to cook in the culinary capital of the world, NYC. Going vegan inspired me to become a chef and change the world for animals through food. So happy that my dream will happen next week!"

04/23/2013 KOALA TRIES TO RETURN HOME AND FINDS IT DESTROYED

In one of the more heartbreaking wildlife photos, this koala has been making headlines as he sits in the center of his old home. A place that was once filled with trees and life, but has been totally cut down so only a flat barren swath of land remains. This is the face of deforestation. At least, the face of one of the animals that made it out alive. Lee Rhiannon, a senator in New South Whales, wrote under this image on her facebook page, "Happier news for our koala featured yesterday and rescued by WIRES: two local landowners with safe and appropriate linkage habitat have been thrilled to accept his relocation on their land and are in the throws of organising with neighbouring properties to ensure koalas on their property are protected from threats, as far as possible." Still, even with that good news, this koala puts a face on habitat destruction. That forest was once this animal's home. Before it was leveled. Many others who lived in trees and on the ground were killed as machines came in to rip the forest to the ground. This koala was one of the lucky ones.

04/23/2013 KYM JOHNSON POSES NUDE FOR PETA'S CRUELTY-FREE CAMPAIGN

"Dancing with the Stars" pro Kym Johnson has become the latest celeb to drop her clothing for a PETA campaign. "It's basically making people aware of choosing cruelty-free products, which I didn't realize animal testing was still happening, so I just want to make people aware," Kym told Life & Style. "If it brings awareness to people and people become aware of what they're putting on their faces - and what an animal has to go through for us to wear some mascara or hairspray - then it's worth it."

04/22/2013 TED DANSON PETITIONING OBAMA TO SAVE WHALES AND DOLPHINS

Actor and longtime environmentalist Ted Danson is petitioning President Obama to help save thousands of whales and dolphins from being subjected to loud, deafening blasts in the Atlantic Ocean. The U.S. Department of the Interior says there is a good chance around 138,500 whales and dolphins will be injured and quite possibly even killed. These blasts will occur every 10 seconds for months and are 100,000 times louder than a jet engine. Now, Danson is reaching out to ask for others help to protect East Coast economies and marine ecosystems with a petition rejecting the seismic airgun blasts. With help from Oceana, Danson has 30 days to get 100,000 signatures. If the goal is reached, then the White House will respond to every single petition.

04/22/2013 RUSSIA LAUNCHES ANIMALS INTO SPACE ON ONE-MONTH JOURNEY

An intrepid critter crew of geckos, mice and gerbils and other animals launched into orbit Friday (April 19) to begin a month-long Russian experiment to study how space travel affects living creatures. The space mission, scientists assure, will return the animals to Earth alive. While the project is run by Russia's Federal Space Agency, also called Roscosmos, an international team of scientists is overseeing the mission's many experiments.

04/20/2013 NEW TEST FOR SKIN SENSITIZATION WITHOUT USING ANIMALS

In an advance in efforts to reduce the use of animals in testing new cosmetic and other product ingredients for skin allergies, scientists are describing a new, highly accurate non-animal test for these skin-sensitizers. Their study appears in ACS' journal Chemical Research in Toxicology. Bruno Miguel Neves and colleagues explain that concerns about the ethics and costs of animal-based tests for skin sensitizers, plus regulations in the European Union, are fostering a search for alternative tests. Testing product ingredients prior to marketing is important, because allergic contact dermatitis is the most prevalent form of immunotoxicity in humans.

04/19/2013 BUAV INVESTIGATION UNCOVERS APPALING ANIMAL SUFFERING AND WRONGDOING AT LEADING UK UNIVERSITY

The BUAV has released harrowing footage following an investigation at Imperial College London that sheds new light on the reality of animal experiments in the UK. A BUAV investigator worked for seven months at Imperial College, ranked as one of the best universities in the world, and documented a catalogue of shortcomings and wrongdoing by staff and researchers that caused even more distress and suffering to the animals in its care than was allowed in the experiments. Findings included: breaches in and lack of knowledge of UK Home Office project licences; a failure to provide adequate anaesthesia and pain relief; incompetence and neglect and highly disturbing methods used to kill animals. The UK Government and research industry repeatedly claim that the UK has some of the highest welfare standards in the world for animals in laboratories, yet huge secrecy and a lack of transparency surrounds animal research. This BUAV investigation, like many others before, has shown the true reality of animal welfare standards at Imperial with breaches of the regulatory regime and inappropriate licensing and enforcement by the Home Office.

04/18/2013 THANDIE NEWTON TALKS ABOUT THE IMPACT OF FACTORY FARMING

Actress Thandie Newton is speaking out about factory farming, and its impact on animals, people and the planet. In a recent interview the "Crash" star said, "I'm a vegetarian myself. It's not so much about the animals. I don’t want any kind of suffering of any living form but it’s more to do with the awareness that so much of the meat on the planet is being produced by factory farms. Animals are being pumped full of growth hormones which are then getting fed to our kids. And it's affecting the water, environment." She goes on to discuss how factory farms cause more damage to the planet than all transportation combined and how consumers are being kept in the dark about the real conditions.

04/18/2013 PETER DINKLAGE CALLS FOR END TO COSMETIC ANIMAL TESTING IN US

"Game of Thrones" actor Peter Dinklage is uniting with animal rights organization Cruelty Free International (CFI) and calling for an end to cosmetic animal testing in the United States. "I am so pleased to support Cruelty Free International and be part of the global campaign to end cosmetics tests on animals," Dinklage said. "It is unacceptable that animals continue to suffer around the world, including the United States of America, for the sake of beauty. I appeal to the USA to follow the European Union’s lead and end animal testing for cosmetics." Last month, Europe officially banned hair and beauty products that had been tested on animals in vivisection labs. "Anyone who wishes to sell new cosmetic products and ingredients in the EU must not test them on animals anywhere in the world. The ban affects all cosmetics including toiletries and beauty products from soap to toothpaste," the European Union declared.

04/17/2013 BILL MAHER ASKS FOR HELP TO STOP THE CANADIAN SEAL HUNT

As Bill Maher wrote in a tweet on Apr 9 "The #sealhunt has begun." Those words, to anyone who has heard of the annual slaughter, are heartbreaking. It means that tens of thousands of baby seals will be clubbed, shot or stabbed to death for their fur. The seals lose their fur as they grow into adulthood which is why the youngsters are the targets. Also, they can't yet swim so have no way to escape from their human predators. Maher is hoping that people donate to HSUS's campaign to stop the seal hunt. Over the years it has decreased in size due to the organization's campaigns, but the battle isn't won yet. Maher tweeted, "Please #give $10 to @humanesociety Sign up here to donate via Twitter: http://say.ly/PNA5yIO"

04/17/2013 BOAT FILLED WITH PROTECTED SPECIES HITS CORAL REEF

A Chinese boat that ran into a coral reef in the southwestern Philippines held evidence of even more environmental destruction inside: more than 10,000 kilograms (22,000 pounds) of meat from a protected species, the pangolin or scaly anteater. The steel-hulled vessel hit an atoll on April 8 at the Tubbataha National Marine Park, a UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site on Palawan island. Coast guard spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Armand Balilo said Monday that 400 boxes, each containing 25 to 30 kilograms of frozen pangolins, were discovered during a second inspection of the boat Saturday. The World Wide Fund for Nature Philippines said the Chinese vessel F/N Min Long Yu could have been carrying up to 2,000 of the toothless, insect-eating animals rolled up in the boxes, with their scales already removed.

04/16/2013 VEGAN MARATHONER WINS NORTH POLE WOMAN'S RACE AND SETS COURSE RECORD

On April 9 vegan amateur athlete Fiona Oakes, 43, from Asheldham in Essex, won the women's race in the North Pole Marathon in -28°C. Not only did Fiona win the women's marathon but she also smashed the 2008 course record for women by 44 minutes – completing the race in just 4 hours and 53 minutes – despite the conditions that were described as the worst in the marathon's eight year history. Fiona was beaten by only two male marathoners. The second placed woman was 55 minutes behind Fiona's time. The North Pole Marathon is the northernmost marathon on earth and Fiona faced this extreme challenge to raise funds for the The Vegan Society and to support the 400 animals that she personally cares for every day at her Tower Hill Stables Animal Sanctuary.

04/16/2013 GERMAN SHELTER WANTS BIEBER TO GIVE MONKEY UP FOR ADOPTION

The Justin Bieber monkey saga continues. It looks like the German animal shelter where the singer's monkey is being held wants Bieber to give his monkey up for adoption. To recap, Bieber took his capuchin monkey, Mally, to Germany while on tour. He didn't have the proper paperwork and the country quarantined Mally. Bieber is currently on tour, which isn't over until the end of April. According to The Inquisitor, a new campaign has formed requesting Bieber to please do the right thing and give Mally to a sanctuary. Even the animal shelter where Mally is staying wants Bieber to do what's best for his 15-week-old baby primate. Originally, Bieber and his team had four weeks to rescue Mally, but that has been extended to an indefinite period of time. Reportedly, the four week time frame only applies if the person in question does not make contact. "His management team had been in touch and indicated that they want the monkey back which means they now have as much time as they need to get the paperwork ready," Karl Heinz Joachim, director of the German animal shelter where Mally's quarantined, explained. In addition to Joachim, several other animal organizations are speaking out against Bieber's irresponsible actions and asking the singer to please let Mally be free for adoption.

04/15/2013 HOME OF AUSCHWITZ TOWN'S LAST JEW TO BECOME VEGETARIAN CAFE

The Auschwitz Jewish Centre is raising funds to turn the now empty home of the man who was the last Jew in the town of Oswiecim, site of the Nazi death camp, into a vegetarian cafe. The home of Szymon Kluger, who died in 2000, is "falling down" and the centre wants to "turn it into Cafe Oshpitzin - taken from the Yiddish name for Oswiecim - a vegetarian cafe that will celebrate local food and dialogue while maintaining the house's important historical presence." It is seeking donations through the "crowdfunding" website Kickstarter.com for the building in the southern town.

04/13/2013 RUSSIAN HELICOPTER CREW SAVES MOOSE FROM ICE HOLE

The remarkable footage and pictures show the act of kindness by the people on board a helicopter flying over the Siberian taiga in Khanty-Mansiisk region. They spotted the moose from the air and taking a closer look realised she was still alive and in urgent need of help. The animal had fallen through the thinning ice of a frozen swamp and was stranded. A few more hours and she would have perished.

04/12/2013 UNDERCOVER ACTIVIST DETAILS SECRET FILMING OF ANIMAL ABUSE

An animal rights investigator details how he has spent over a decade secretly filming animal abuse and why that work is now imperiled by a wave of laws sweeping the country. "Pete" has secretly captured animal abuse on farms and slaughterhouses after applying to work at the location. He has released video footage to law enforcement and activist groups such as Mercy for Animals, helping spark national outcry and charges against the abusers. His investigations and footage have led to at least 15 criminal cases and have been used in several documentaries. But now Pete's work is under threat. A dozen or so state legislatures have introduced bills that target people who covertly expose farm animal abuse. Nicknamed "ag-gag" laws, they would make it illegal to covertly videotape livestock farms or apply for a job at one without disclosing affiliations with animal rights groups. They also require activists to hand over undercover videos within 24 hours, preventing them from amassing a trove of material and publicizing their findings on their own.

04/11/2013 PREGNANT ORANGUTAN CLINGING TO THE LAST REMAINING FOREST TREE AFTER BULLDOZERS CLEAR JUNGLE TO MAKE WAY FOR OIL PLANTATION

Petrified and starving, a desperate orangutan clings defiantly to the last tree standing in her forest  before it is completely destroyed and turned into a palm oil plantation. Minutes later, the majestic creature is stunned by an anesthetic gun and falls into a net, taken away by rescuers. She was one of several orangutans saved from probable death in Borneo due to the deforestation which threatens their existence.

04/10/2013 SAMOA MINISTER PROPOSES SELLING ISLAND'S STRAY DOGS FOR EXPORT MEAT

The main proposal, to export the island's strays to countries that would eat them, comes as the island's parliament debates a bill seeking to deal with the problem of errant dogs on the streets of the capital Apia. Some Samoan politicians have come up with a plan to rid the streets of the strays, by turning them into food for export. "In other countries they eat snake, even dogs or horses meat," Samoan Associate Education Minister Toleafoa Faafisi told Television New Zealand. Mr Faafisi said insisted that rather than simply culling the dogs, the Pacific Island should seek to profit from the clean-up and some of his colleagues are supporting him.

04/09/2013 LEONA LEWIS SAYS, "F*CK THE GRAND NATIONAL" HORSE RACE

While millions of viewers tuned in on Saturday to watch the annual Grand National horse race, singer Leona Lewis was raging against the event on twitter. Lewis wrote, "Fuck the grand national" and then continued, "How about we put down the little twats that running those poor horses into the ground. can't stand this bullshit." For those imagining a traditional race around a track, the Grand National is a four mile long steeplechase with fences along the way for the approximately forty horses and riders to jump over. Because of the nature of the race, the death of a horse is a nearly yearly event, and in some cases, even more than one horse has perished. And yet, the televised event in Liverpool is watched by millions of fans each year.

04/08/2013 ANIMAL EQUALITY UNDERCOVER INVESTIGATION INSIDE CHINA'S DOG SLAUGHTERHOUSES

Animal Equality investigators, who put themselves at risk to infiltrate slaughterhouses and dog meat businesses in Jiangmen and Zhanjiang, have obtained never-seen-before images and video footage revealing the horrors taking place each day to satisfy the demand for dog meat across China. The shocking images show terrified dogs kept in appalling conditions in the slaughterhouses before being brutally beaten with wooden clubs and stabbed to death in full view of other dogs who await their turn.

04/06/2013 HSUS ANIMATES THE CANADIAN SEAL HUNT

It's amazing how much easier it is to get someone to watch an animated video on a sad or disturbing topic than it is to show actual bloodshed. In HSUS's new video, they tackle the seal hunt in a way that will persuade many more people to watch it than if they showed the actual killings. It's creative, well done and drives the message home without making you reach for a noose.

04/05/2013 SOMERHALDER LINKS ARKANSAS OIL SPILL TO KEYSTONE PIPELINE

Last Friday a gash in the Exxon Mobil Pegasus Pipeline caused an oil spill in the middle of a residential community in Mayflower, Arkansas. There are conflicting reports as to how many gallons have leaked, but even in what could be considered a smaller spill, it's having devastating effects on wildlife and communities. Actor and eco-advocate Ian Somerhalder took to his twitter page to show that what happened in Arkansas could happen to more communities if the Keystone XL Pipeline is allowed to be built. Somerhalder wrote, "Umm is this what you want in your back yard America? NO, Keystone XLPipeline - we do not want you - take a look everyone". He then linked to this video showing oil lined residential streets.

04/05/2013 DOG RESCUED FROM PUPPY MILL WAKS ON GRASS FOR FIRST TIME

Mill Dog Rescue posted the video on YouTube writing that, "Lizzy spent 12 long years living in a small cage in a puppy mill. She never once touched the ground. National Mill Dog Rescue rescued her early in March 2013 and she immediately went to a loving home. This video shows her in the grass for the very first time. Prepare yourself for tears of joy!" If she spent that many years in the mill, we can only assume Lizzy was used as a breeding dog. We hope she's able to spend the rest of her days enjoying the grass, the sun and all the wonderful smells the world has to offer.

04/04/2013 62% OF AFRICAN FOREST ELEPHANTS KILLED IN 10 YEARS

The sheer scale and speed of elephant poaching in central Africa has been highlighted in a new long-term multi-national study of forest elephant populations. In 10 years 62% of the elephants have been killed  and a third of all their habitat of 10 years ago is now too dangerous for them to live in. The study, which is the largest of any ever undertaken on the African forest elephant  included work from over 60 researchers and spanned from 2002 till 2011. Conservation staff who took part in the surveys committed 91,600 days surveying elephants in 5 countries (Cameroon, Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon and the Republic of Congo), walking over 13,000 kilometers (more than 8,000 miles) and recording over 11,000 elephant dung piles for the analysis.

04/04/2013 WRIGLEY FIELD EXPANDING VEGETARIAN OPTIONS FOR BASEBALL FANS

For a long time if a vegetarian or vegan wanted to go to a sporting event, they would have to think ahead and bring something from home. Now, due to the higher number of people eating less meat, or choosing to eat no meat at all, entire sports arenas are offering more vegetarian options to fans. The Chicago Cubs and Levy Restaurants just released a whole new menu of items to be served at Wrigley Field for the 2013 season. Cubs.com reports that veggie dishes will include, Veggie Hot Dogs and a new Veggie Chopped Salad. Those will be added to the already meat-free Veggie Burger, Fresh Fruta Cup, Veggie Cups and others.

04/02/2013 NEW FOOD SCANDAL: EXPERTS DISCOVER CURRIES MAY CONTAIN MEAT FROM DOG OR CATS

A lamb curry has been found to contain a mystery meat – sparking fears it could be dog or cat. The grim find is a shocking twist to the UK's horse meat scandal and was revealed in a documentary screened on Marc 27. Experts could only say what was not in the chunks of meat – and they ruled out lamb, beef, chicken, pork, goat, horse and even human flesh. The curry was bought from an unnamed London takeaway. It was a random sample sent for testing along with fast food including burgers, kebabs and Chinese dishes. The discovery will spark fears of what is in takeaway dishes across the country.
