03/31/2014 SAMUEL L. JACKSON CREDITS VEGAN DIET FOR WEIGHT LOSS AND YOUTHFUL LOOKS
Actor Samuel L. Jackson attributed his recent weight loss and age-defying appearance to the vegan diet. "It's a new vegan diet," Jackson told Yahoo. "I'm just trying to live forever. Trying to finish out my Marvel deal." Samuel L. adopted the vegan diet to look and feel his best after signing a nine-picture deal with Marvel Studios to play super-spy Nick Fury, who first appeared in the 2008 blockbuster, "Iron Man." Jackson, 65, joins a long list of celebrity vegans, including former U.S. president Bill Clinton, TV personality Al Sharpton, and actors Michelle Pfeiffer and Jared Leto. They have all credited the plant-based diet for giving them more energy, helping them lose weight, and staying youthful-looking.
03/28/2014 THREE BEAGLES RESCUED FROM A LABORATORY BY BUAV
An undercover investigation by the BUAV has rescued and rehomed three healthy beagles from a laboratory run by MSD Animal Health in the UK. Most of the dogs used by MSD Animal Health face "certain death" the minute they enter or are born in the laboratory facilities. "Suzie" the BUAV investigator was able to persuade the company to release two adult nursing females, Bonnie and Billie and one 5 month old puppy, Oliver. Tragically during the BUAV investigation, 92 puppies and 10 adult nursing females were killed, including all Bonnie's and Billie's puppies and Oliver's mother, brothers and sisters. Earlier this month, the BUAV investigation at MSD Animal Health revealed that puppies were separated from their mothers at a very young age, some just over four weeks, to be used in tests; the routine killing of puppies from five weeks of age; the routine killing of healthy female adult beagles once their puppies were taken away from them and a lack of effort to find homes for those adult and puppy beagles who were no longer required or could have been released at the end of the experiments.
03/27/2014 DANISH ZOO THAT KILLED GIRAFFE PUTS DOWN FOUR LIONS
A Copenhagen zoo that prompted international outrage by putting down a healthy giraffe and dissecting it in public has killed two lions and their two cubs to make way for a new male, it said on Tuesday. "Because of the pride of lions' natural structure and behaviour, the zoo has had to euthanise the two old lions and two young lions who were not old enough to fend for themselves," Copenhagen Zoo said in a statement. The 10-month-old lions "would have been killed by the new male lion as soon as he got the chance," it said.
03/26/2014 STUDY SHOWS MANY MEDICINES CONTAIN UNLABELLED ANIMAL PRODUCTS
People in Hong Kong with dietary restrictions could be unwittingly ingesting animal ingredients, including those banned by religious laws, in the form of everyday medicines. A new British study found that undeclared products of animal provenance are present in numerous common medications taken globally - and, like Britain, Hong Kong has no official requirements when it comes to the labelling of ingredients of animal origin. There are some cases in which medicines themselves are sourced directly from animals - blood thinner Heparin can come from pigs, for example, while some popular brands of oestrogen are made from pregnant mare's urine.
03/25/2014 SPLIT ZOO CLOSES ITS DOORS
Split, Croatia's second largest city, is situated on the Adriatic coastline and is one of the country's most popular vacation destinations thanks to its location and historic monuments, some of which date back to the Roman times. While tourists have often been satisfied with their visit to Split, one particular attraction – the Split Zoo – has left many visitors disturbed. For years, animal protection groups in Croatia have been trying their best to shut this zoo down, deemed the "worst zoo in the world" by tourists for its poor care of animals and small, dirty enclosures. Nonprofit advocacy group Animal Friends Croatia sent a letter to Split's city authorities urging them to close the zoo in both 2005 and 2012, calling it a "genuine animal torture space" in their 2005 letter. After years of pressure and a recent exposé and call to action in the national newspaper, Jutarnji List, the zoo has finally decided to close its doors. Once all the animals have been relocated, the zoo's land will be converted into a children's village and botanical garden, with a small section for domestic animals, Jutarnji List reports.
03/24/2014 ONE IN TEN SWEDES IS VEGETARIAN
Ten percent of Sweden's population are now vegetarian or vegan, with demand for meat-free diet options seeing a nationwide surge with young Swedes leading the charge. There has been a four-percent increase in the number of Swedish vegetarians over the past five years, a survey revealed on Thursday. Pollsters Demoskop carried out the study commissioned by Animal Rights Sweden (Djurens Rätt), the largest animal rights organization in Scandinavia. Six percent of the respondents to the survey said they were vegetarians and four percent said they were vegan.
03/21/2014 MAYIM BIALIK SUPPORTS US BAN ON ANIMAL TESTING FOR COSMETICS
Actress, animal lover, author, and vegan, Mayim Bialik is supporting animals once again by teaming up with Cruelty-Free International to support the ban on animal testing for cosmetics in the United States. "It is very important to me to speak out on behalf of animals who cannot protest their suffering and ask the compassionate people of the United States to join me, and Cruelty Free International, to call on the U.S Government to end the outdated use of animals for cosmetics testing once and for all," Bialik said. "It doesn't take a genius to know that using animals for these cruel and unnecessary tests is unjustifiable."
03/20/2014 HUNTERS BURN HUNTING GEAR, VOW TO STOP KILLING WILDLIFE
Animal activists in Iran celebrated a major success. 19 hunters gave up their animal killing ways and encouraged their peers to do the same. The decision came after a local environmental organization, Chya, met individually with each of the hunters to explain to them the newest findings released by the country's Department of Environment. The report listed 74 species in great danger of extinction if the illegal hunt and sale of the body parts of animals like the blue whale, Asiatic cheetah, Caspian seal and Iranian yellow deer doesn't end. To show they really are taking this matter seriously, the men publicly destroyed their hunting gear, breaking riffles and burning their traps. They have now partnered with Chya to try to get fellow hunters to join the movement and stop killing and start standing up for wild animals.
03/19/2014 MEATOUT IN CROATIA
Spring is here again, and Animal Friends invites everyone, especially young people, to turn to tasty and healthy plant-based nutrition. Children and adolescents eat far too little vegetables today, but their awareness of environmental and animal protection might help them improve their eating habits. In the largest Meatout action so far, more than 300 Croatian citizens have pledged to participate in Meatout by signing on to eat vegan on: Meatout Day, every Monday, or every day. Meatout was launched in 1985 by the Farm Animal Rights Movement (FARM), and this year it will be joined by some 40 students from the elementary school "King Tomislav" in Zagreb. At the Animal Friends' info stall on Trg bana Jelacica in Zagreb, on March 20 at 11:00 a.m., they will invite all young people, from elementary school to university-aged students, to eat exclusively plant-based foods at least one day each year.

03/17/2014 LEILANI MUNTER RACES FOR CAPTIVE ORCAS WITH "BLACKFISH" RACE CAR
Even if you don't follow NASCAR, the name Leilani Munter may ring a bell for you. In 2010, Munter raced in the Daytona 500 with a car wrapped in images from "The Cove," a documentary about brutal dolphin hunts. Her car raised a lot of awareness to millions of race fans about the issue. Now, Munter is back to raise awareness about the plight of another sea friend: captive orcas. Munter has an opportunity to race at Talladega Speedway on May 3rd of this year. For this race, she has partnered with the Oceanic Preservation Society (OPS) to bring more attention to a new audience about the suffering of orcas in captivity at marine parks. Together, Munter and OPS want to transform her car into a "200MPH 'Blackfish' poster."

03/14/2014 CONVICTS SAVE DOGS FROM DEATH ROW
Film maker Amy Jackson is creating a new documentary chronicling the relationships between inmates and the dogs they are responsible for training through the Operation Second Chance program, a partnership between Sheriff Butch Conway and the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department and Society of Humane Friends of Georgia. Also known as Jail Dogs, the program saves dogs from euthanasia, vets and trains them and then helps them find their forever homes. Most programs like this one take place in prisons, where the inmates are serving lengthy sentences, but Jail Dogs is the first of its kind to focus on a jail setting, which is marked by its high inmate turnover. Since the program's start, over 217 dogs have been rescued from death row and adopted into forever families.
03/13/2014 ELEPHANTS RECOGNIZE THE VOICES OF THEIR ENEMIES
Humans are among the very few animals that constitute a threat to elephants. Yet not all people are a danger — and elephants seem to know it. The giants have shown a remarkable ability to use sight and scent to distinguish between African ethnic groups that have a history of attacking them and groups that do not. Now a study reveals that they can even discern these differences from words spoken in the local tongues.
03/12/2014 MAYOR DE BLASIO REJECTS LIAM NEESON'S STABLE TOUR INVITE
Actor Liam Neeson has been volunteering a lot of his time lately to halt the ban of horse-drawn carriages in New York City. Neeson invited NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio last week to tour the stables where the horses are kept to prove that they're treated well. De Blasio recently told the NY Daily News that he respectfully declines that invite. "I respect Liam Neeson a lot, I'm a big fan of his work. But the fact is, I put forward a plan and a vision and the people ratified it in an election and that's what matters most," de Blasio said over the weekend.
03/11/2014 KENTUCKY TO FULLY BAN VEAL CRATES BY 2018
Kentucky is now the eighth state in America to ban the use of cruel veal crates. The Kentucky Livestock Care Standards Commission has issued new rules that prohibit the confinement of calves raised for veal in cramped crates. Veal crates confine calves for their short, 16-weeks long lives, tethered at the neck and unable to turn around. The ban will go into full effect by 2018. Unfortunately, the commission didn’t include two other inhumane factory farming practices in their updated rules: cutting of dairy cows' tails and the use of gestation crates for breeding pigs.
03/10/2014 AL GORE PREDICTS HE'LL EAT VEGAN FOR LIFE
Last November, in the week leading up to Thanksgiving, Al Gore was "outed" in a Forbes article as being vegan. Now, for the first time since that passing utterance, Gore has come forward and spoken publicly, confirming he is indeed vegan. And loving it. In an exclusive interview with Medscape Editor-in-Chief Eric Topol, MD the politician made it crystal clear that meat, dairy and eggs are off the table. And we couldn't be more thrilled. "Over a year ago I changed my diet to a vegan diet, really just to experiment to see what it was like. And I felt better, so I continued with it. Now, for many people, that choice is connected to environmental ethics and health issues and all that stuff, but I just wanted to try it to see what it was like. In a visceral way, I felt better, so I've continued with it and I'm likely to continue it for the rest of my life," Gore said.
03/08/2014 CANADA BANS GESTATION CRATES FOR PREGNANT PIGS
Canada has banned the use of gestation crates for pregnant sows this week. The Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Pigs declares that any pork facility being built or renovated after July 1, 2014, must use group housing systems for pregnant sows. Hopefully this nationwide ban in Canada will inspire a wider spread change in the United States, where only 9 states ban the use of gestation crates. While the use of gestation crates is only the tip of the iceberg concerning the welfare of animals raised for food, eliminating their use is a sign of progress. The best way to be sure that no animals are harmed in the making of your food is to reduce the amount of meat, dairy, and eggs that you consume.
03/07/2014 NEW BILL COULD END COSMETIC ANIMAL TESTING IN USA
Congressman Jim Moran, D-VA, has introduced bill "H.R. 4148" to congress, which will prohibit animal testing for cosmetics manufactured and sold in the United States. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and the Humane Legislative Fund have been tirelessly campaigning through their "Be Cruelty-Free U.S.A." initiative for new legislation that would put a halt to animal testing in the U.S. If approved, the Humane Cosmetics Act bill will make it "unlawful for anyone to conduct or commission cosmetic animal testing in the U.S." Also, it will "[p]rohibit selling, offering for sale or transporting any cosmetics in interstate commerce if the final product or any component was developed or manufactured using animal testing."
03/06/2014 BARCELONA BANS ANYTHING RESEMBLING BULLFIGHTING
Barcelona City Hall plans to ban anything resembling a bullfight. In June 2013, bullfights and any other celebration which included the death of bulls were banned. However, now, having studied the matter with animal defence groups, the council wants to ban any of the steps involved in a bullfight to prevent animals from suffering. This will be included in a new law for the Protection, Ownership and Sale of Animals which is due to come into effect in September. It will also include a ban on "bullfighting shows" for performances, films, adverts or any other matter. To get approval to do so, an evaluation will be carried out to determine whether it would be stressful or abusive for the animals. Using wild animals in shows will also be banned.
03/05/2014 LE'VEON BELL IN NEW PETA ADVERTISEMENT
Pittsburg Steeler, Le'Veon Bell, shows off his tattoos in PETA's new "Ink, Not Mink" campaign. The talented running back is obviously dedicated to his successful football career and is now showing his commitment to animals by posing with a football and the caption "I choose ink, not mink, because… animals deserve better." The football stud has teamed up with PETA to prove that wearing fur is immoral, unethical and unnecessary. The fur industry abuses animals in unimaginable ways by electrocuting, beating, drowning, strangling and skinning alive the animals, including foxes, minks, raccoons, rabbits, chinchillas, cats and dogs, that are raised and used for their furs.
03/04/2014 ANGEL THE ALBINO DOLPHIN GETS FULL PAGE AD IN NY TIMES
Activist Ric O'Barry, whose tireless work to save dolphins featured heavily in the documentary "The Cove," has taken out a full page ad in the NY Times asking for an end to the bloody dolphin hunts in Taiji, Japan. The ad features "Angel," the white albino dolphin who has become a symbol of this year's tragic hunts, with the prominent headline of "Free Angel or Watch Her Die." It definitely gets to the point quickly. The ad includes a link to the Dolphin Project website where the public can send a letter to Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe asking him to end the hunts and help a baby albino dolphin, called Angel, from dying in captivity.
03/03/2014 CAT SAVES 10 PEOPLE FROM FIRE IN FRANCE
Meatball is a hero. The cat woke her guardian up when a fire broke out in the attic of their home - and saved 10 lives. Alexandra Marlin lives in a farmhouse that had been converted into apartments in the south of France. According to the Local, Marlin woke up early on Sunday morning when her cat, Boulette (meatball) began scratching on the floor of the attic. When Marlin yanked open the attic's trap door, she saw fire. She escaped the house and called firefighters. Thankfully, residents in neighboring apartments also escaped the blaze. Once outside, Marlin couldn't find her heroic cat. Fortunately, Boulette had merely run off to avoid the chaotic scene. She returned later that day.
