On that occasion, they set up 18 vegan flags in Zagreb and another 39 in Opatija, Makarska, Pula, Samobor, Čakovec and Krapina to remind everyone of compassion and sustainability, which is the main message of the colors of the vegan flag. In addition to beautiful flags, vegan colors will illuminate Mestrovic's pavilion and fountains in front of the National and University Library. "We are extremely grateful to the cities that have recognized the importance of the vegan movement for the preservation and health of the planet, people and animals, and we hope that other cities will join next year. We invite everyone to visit Ban Jelačić Square in Zagreb on November 2, 2021, from 11 a.m., where they will be able to try out vegan cakes in honor of World Vegan Day. You will also get useful information about the benefits of vegan food and tips on how to take the first step towards a healthy and sustainable diet,” the Association states.

10/28/2021 Billie Eilish calls for "urgent action" ahead of UN climate change conference

Billie Eilish has called for “urgent, urgent action” on climate change ahead of COP26, the United Nations’ upcoming conference on the topic in Glasgow. The conference is set to run between October 31 and November 12, and is aiming to “bring parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on climate change”. Eilish – along with actor Rainn Wilson, explorer Levison Wood and others – united with scientists from Arctic Basement as part of the University of Exeter’s GreenFutures campaign, filming a video message addressing world leaders. “This year, our leaders are deciding the global actions required on the environment and climate emergency in a critical decade for our planet,” Eilish says in the brief clip. “We must stand together and speak up to save our planet. Not just for us, but for our future generations. We need urgent, urgent action now, and to work together as one.” Eilish has been vocal about the need for action on the climate emergency for some time. Last month, she was one of many artists who called on the United States Congress to push for strong climate change policy. (www.nme.com)

10/25/2021 Tourists were petting them, and the Ministry ordered their shooting

Animal Friends Croatia Association is appalled by the decisions of the Ministry of Agriculture, based on the findings of the State Inspectorate, about the shooting of domestic animals that roam without supervision. That is why Association has requested a revision of these decisions: "We are concerned because it seems that "taking care of" stray, neglected and abused animals by shooting at them is becoming a common practice of the state instead of finding them a new home and sanctioning irresponsible caretakers. The animals must not pay with their lives for human error and it is disgraceful that in the 21st century the shooting of domestic animals is prescribed in the European Union. Images of bloodied horses, goats and other animals brutally killed by firearms are not something by which Croatia should be recognized and remembered." The Association explains that in June this year a decision was issued allowing the Hunting Society "Jarebica" from Novalja to shoot "wild" goats. The explanation for that kind of decision was that they roam freely and unsupervised in the hunting area, they are not registered, they have no owner or possessor, they are not properly marked and they are not under veterinary supervision. For some reason, the Ministry considers justified to punish goats by shooting at them because of all the reasons mentioned above. Even though for all those reasons people are the only ones that can be held responsible, not animals. And even though animals that were considered to be driven wild were caught with a sleeping rifle in similar situations.

10/05/2021 120,000 Pigs Will Be Killed Due To Supply Chain Shortages

A leading UK meat industry body says up to 120,000 pigs could be killed due to ongoing worker shortages. Farmers are concerned that increasing livestock numbers are leading to a backlog that could put animal welfare in disarray. Things are only getting worse: with now thousands of animals at risk of culling. Meat producers and farmers in the UK are pressing the government to solve the ‘gas crisis’, driven by record-high prices that are halting slaughters of animals. Food production is under threat following the gas shortage, and the government is reportedly in emergency talks with meat processors to solve it. Legislation insists all animals must be stunned before slaughter, with some religious exemptions. Many campaigners say the practice is inhumane, and have long called for it to be banned. The Humane Slaughter Association says it causes ‘significant’ distress.⠀Moreover, a figure at Compassion In World Farming told the BBC: “In concentrated carbon dioxide, pigs will panic, try desperately to escape and gasp, before falling down and losing consciousness up to a minute later [according to some sources] and possibly longer.”⠀(plantbasednews.org)
