10/31/24 Choosing Plant-Based Food Helps Save Everything on our Planet
On World Vegan Day, Animal Friends Croatia encourage you to explore the advantages of plant-based food which can help save the planet by trying out new recipes
- Veganism is a global movement for a more equitable and a healthier future of Planet Earth
World Vegan Day is a global event marked annually on November 1, celebrating compassion, health, and care for our planet. It was first started in England in 1994 by Louise Wallis, President of the British Vegan Society at the time. Her aim was to highlight numerous positive aspects of veganism and inspire people to think about a lifestyle free of animal exploitation. In this regard, Animal Friends Croatia encourage everyone to research the many advantages a vegan diet and products offer and try out new recipes for delicious plant-based foods that might be interesting for all.
Every day veganism is becoming increasingly popular, which is evident from the variety of products on offer in shops all over Croatia, even in smaller communities. The variety of vegan products has widened significantly. Various plant-based products and milks, plant-based protein, and plant-based meat products such as sausages, burgers, salami, cold cuts, and meat balls have become widely available. Documentaries promoting a vegan lifestyle, such as The Game Changers, Cowspiracy and What the Health have been broadcast on television and several streaming platforms. Millions of people have been encouraged to discuss veganism and sustainability.
Many people living a vegan lifestyle want to serve as an example with their conscious life choice paving the way towards a more peaceful and environmentally cleaner future. Thus, numerous well-known influencers, fitness trainers and food bloggers share advice on the vegan diet and lifestyle, which garners additional interest among younger generations. In addition, an increasing number of athletes turn vegan as it helps them achieve impressive results more easily. Many simply want to start moving towards veganism and consume plant-based products and dishes more frequently or from time to time.
Veganism is becoming a firm choice of lifestyle in our society, not just a passing trend. The rise of the vegan movement is supported by the fact that industrial animal farming consumes enormous amounts of resources: from cultivating plants for cattle food, vast drinking water consumption and deforestation to food transportation and waste, all resulting in high greenhouse gas emissions. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization report, industrial animal farming contributes more to global warming than the total global transportation. Avoiding meat and dairy or choosing plant-based food and products is the best way for an individual to reduce their contribution to climate change.
The “Choose Plant-Based, Eat Delicious Food” cookbook that we published in collaboration with Lidl on World Vegan Day, describes in detail how what we choose to put on our plate can play a significant role in the preservation of the only home we have. Apart from twenty recipes that embody the love for food and the love for the planet, the cookbook also offers many interesting facts on vegan diet and the effect of our choice of food on the environment, useful advice on how to reduce our carbon footprint in our kitchen, and suggestions on how to turn any dish vegan as easily as possible, while increasing the use of plant-based ingredients. The cookbook is freely available from here.
